#nintendo Nintendo has been so busy announcing sequels to every Mario sub-franchise that you can think of—new sidescrollers, new 3D platformers, new Golf, and Mario & Luigi—that you'd think they don't have anything else. Well, other than Zeldas. More »

It's the videogame equivalent of a triathlon, only with the added bonus of having to redo any one leg of the event or the entire event itself should your performance ever fall slightly below satisfactory.

Dillon and company provide a pretty interesting experience on the 3DS in a genre that’s currently rife with copycats and bland design choices. While Dillon’s Rolling Western might not be the most polished experience when it comes to controls, everything else about the game really stands out as being something great, and the overall experience is worth checking out.

It's easy to view Dillon's level design as a diluted treasure hunt or a tedious and barren battleground. The game displays a poor first impression by limiting too much to the player early on. But as you dig deeper and start mounting impressive weapons, items and formulate strategies, Dillon's debut game flourishes into something unique and flavoursome. Like any good new IP should.

The game has the same length or more than a $40.00 retail game like Super Mario 3D Land. This is not a normal tower defense game, so if you want something different from the norm, this is a game for you.

While it becomes a bit repetitive late in the game, Dillon’s Rolling Western is a good fit for anyone tiring of the same old tower defense formula. Combining the charm and wide-open exploration of The Legend of Zelda with town defense proves to be an addictive recipe. The game’s cartoony Wild West visuals and terrific sense of humor is the icing on the cake. This is a must-download eShop title for anyone finding their 3DS becoming as dusty as Dillon’s trails.

Despite its cute animal trappings, Rolling Western can be downright devious, but in the course of tinkering with its many mechanics, you reap the rewards of applying your knowledge intelligently. Yes, this way of thinking may seem bold in our tutorial-driven present, but maybe low-key outlets like the eShop exist as the last hope for games that don't condescend? Whatever the case, don't be surprised if Dillon's has you hoping that Nintendo brings some of its old-school sensibilities back to their major franchises.

Dillon's Rolling Western is expensive but this tower defence game is also one of the best 3D games available in the eShop.

Dillon's Rolling Western is a solid attempt to do something new by blending together two well-established genres. By smashing tower defense head first into an action title Dillon's creates something wholly different from anything in the eShop, or anywhere else for that matter.

Once you adapt to the controls, however, the combat is enjoyable, especially when you learn how to chain combos together. Tower defense fans are bound to enjoy building and upgrading towers as well, though I've yet to earn enough cash to build a truly imposing blockade.

Dillon’s Rolling Western is another solid 3DS download title, with a reasonable amount of depth and content to keep you busy for a while. The action tower defence experience is relatively compulsive, with the daily structure implementing a combination of strategic thinking, frantic item gathering and action-filled combat.

If we were to design a Nintendogs + Cats demo, it would go something like this: you walk into a virtual pet store to meet a new puppy, wearing an adorable bow. The proprietor lets the pup out of its cage to play with you, and the dog can't hide its excitement to run and play with all the toys in the room. It barks happily and licks the screen to simulate licking your face.

Its barks sound just enough like your name, but just different enough, that you question what you heard.

Then, after you choose to exit the demo, the virtual puppy goes back into its cage, whimpering. The last thing you see before you close the 3DS lid is your puppy's paw up against the screen. Occasionally you'll receive a note via SpotPass telling you that the little scamp still looks out the window whenever a car the same model as yours drives by.

We didn't design the real demo.

#nintendo One's a mildly anticipated game for the 3DS eShop; one is a DSiWare game about box pushing; and the third comes from a publisher that thought 2 Fast 4 Gnomz was a good name. What could they possibly have in common? More »

Following Pushmo and Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword, the bar was set pretty high for Nintendo's latest 3DS download, Dillon's Rolling Western. While it perhaps doesn't reach the heights of those two titles, Rolling Western still has plenty to offer for eShop fans looking for a quirky, new tower de...
