The following info and comments come from Creative Director Jeremiah Slaczka...

"We were actually, I think, the first North American developers to see the Wii U. We're very close to Nintendo and we've done very well on their platform, so they came by and showed us a prototype of the Wii U and said 'What do you think about it?'"

- the team was originally trying to make a pointer-friendly keyboard for a Wii Scribblenauts a year prior
- the idea was scrapped when 5th Cell was shown the Wii U
- 5th Cell got multiple Wii U dev kits throughout the process, with hardware changing all the time
- sometimes the dev kits only had their project running at 10FPS, but eventually they got up to 60FPS as dev kits advanced
- the idea to include Nintendo characters was pitched to Nintendo back at last E3
- Miyamoto even discussed the idea, offering up ideas of how the characters should appear
- the team originally wanted Donkey Kong, Metroid and Pokemon as well, but there just wasn't time to do it

"Our programmers have talked about, from DS to 3DS [to Wii U], it's definitely gotten better. Nintendo has continually focused their SDK to be more user intuitive. A lot less proprietary stuff, a lot more stuff that everybody knows already. So it's not relearning stuff. Of Nintendo stuff, I would say it's definitely the best they've done, I've heard from programmers."

- 5th Cell sees Nintendo realizing that online is very important this time around

"I definitely saw a policy change. They're definitely much more interested in, uh, not the friends codes, not [being] as friends code-heavy anymore. They kind of realized and understand online is very very important for a console."

- 5th Cell didn't have time to include Miiverse-specific implementation, but wanted to
- versus multiplayer was created/tested, but the team didn't end up liking it

Apparently there are 41 siblings in Maxwell's family. That's according to a PR I was just emailed. We might have a contest coming up that involves this family portrait, so stay tuned!

Yoshi, Zelda, Luigi, Mario, Link, Zelda, Epona and a Goron are joining the cast of characters in Scribblenauts Unlimited for Wii U, according to an announcement on GameSpot’s Facebook page.

Nintendo seems less concerned with leasing out its characters for other games. Between themed characters in the upcoming Wii U version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and villains like Bowser showing up in Disney’s Wreck-It Wraph film, the licensing chains have loosened a bit at Nintendo.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is part of the Wii U launch lineup on November 18, but the game itself is not exclusive to Wii U. The PC version, for example, will have integrated support for Steam Workshop.

“Players will delight in producing fantastical and sometimes hilarious interactions between the Mario and Legend of Zelda characters and objects, alongside everyone’s favorite word-wielding Scribblenauts adventurer, Maxwell. Discovered Nintendo characters and objects will behave in the fun and fantastical ways they do in their respective game worlds.” - Warner Bros.

What, was the over-descriptive headline not enough for you? It's a trailer for the Wii U Scribblenauts game, OK?

This is a puzzle platformer in which players assume the role of a boy tasked with lifting a curse that is slowly turning his sister to stone. As players explore side-scrolling environments, they solve puzzles and create customized objects to complete mission objectives (e.g., helping a character prepare for a date; capturing a dinosaur; rescuing a character in distress). By typing in whatever nouns they can imagine, players can create myriad objects or entities in the game world.

By adding adjectives, players can also modify these nouns to create different word combinations, triggering brief, comical scenarios: a “homicidal house” that can attack a man; a “cannibal” that orders food at a diner; a “necrophagous bike” that can eat a corpse; a “suicidal house” that attacks itself with a knife. Players can also summon “cartoony” versions of bats, bombs, guns, and flamethrowers to destroy nearby objects or other summoned items. These triggered animations are minimally depicted and usually accompanied by musical notes, colorful flashes, or small puffs of smoke. If players wish, they may type in the word “vomit,” causing a beige-colored puddle to appear on screen; typing the adjective “flatulent” results in squishy sound effects.
