...I had a lot of fun with Game &Wario as both a solo gamer and with friends, so that’s really all I felt that mattered. It’s a really great collection of mini-games with only a few bad ones scattered throughout, and incorporates some really clever use of multiplayer with only the use on one GamePad.

You're not going to be playing it six months from now, but what's there is a fun compilation of mini-games aimed more at the solo gamer than a party environment. Nintendo Land for loners.

+ Mini-games offer more hits than misses
+ Some unlockables are insane

- Generally feels a bit lightweight
- Not enough multiplayer gaming

The very definition of a mixed bag, Game & Wario is innovative, but stingy with it; silly, but a bit of a slog. Beware the bad eggs, cherish the prize ones.

Game and Wario reminds us of Nintendo's past greatness with the series while offering us a small warning that they are becoming the very company it was critiquing back in 2003. Game and Wario is by no means a bad game, but it does feel like Wario's trying to make a quick buck with this one.

Mini-game collections are best used as examples of a device's unique functionality. That means that they need to be unique themselves, and too much of Game & Wario feels like it's been done before. Its handful of smart designs provide fleeting thrills, while the rest are unfortunately forgettable.

If you want to play a great game on Wii U, pass. If you want to laugh a lot and marvel at the daring creativity and strange sensibilities of some of Nintendo's own developers, get it.

Regardless of originality, all these games are well polished and fun, though none of them are going to please everyone. Considering the budget price and the amount of content here, you could do a lot worse. Just don't go into it expect Nintendo Land-sized production values or that frantic WarioWare feeling.

Beyond the obligatory late arrival of the birdlike Pyoro, that’s your lot. As a launch-day showcase, Game & Wario would certainly be worth your time – the likes of Gamer, Taxi and Islands offer something delightful and different – but six months on from Wii U’s launch, it seems too much like an afterthought, a stopgap to fill a worryingly barren release schedule.

Game & Wario is a strange game that doesn’t offer a particularly cohesive experience, but that’s all part of the charm. It is a humorous and fun title that is perfect for showing off why the Wii U is special.

Playing it safe may make short-term sense for Nintendo's bottom line, but the company should never forget that their most innovative and beloved classics often operated on risky and untested waters. Game & Wario, on the other hand, lazily floats in a half-full kiddie pool, trying its best not to make any waves.

There's fun to be had, but this isn't the reliable source of brilliant design that it should be. If you expected breezy old Wario to make sense of the Wii U in some fundamental manner, you're going to be disappointed by a game that occasionally seems quietly defeated by its host platform.

Between the single and multiplayer modes there are a few standouts, but there isn't enough there to justify picking the game up for your next party or to hold you over until, say, something like Pikmin 3 comes out. Game & Wario is a very disappointing outing for a series that has pushed new hardware in zany yet inventive ways a number of times before.

YOU'LL LOVE
Funny animated shorts
Some clever use of the GamePad
Multiplayer modes are fun and infinitely replayable

YOU'LL HATE
There are only really four multiplayer games
Most singleplayer games are mindless and uninteresting
Even the best games aren't that original

Wario Ware was once bristling with creativity and energy, fizzing and sputtering with mad, short-form ideas, but Game & Wario is just a bit boring. The selection of games is sparse, and a couple of excellent ones don't make up for the rest. The Wii U is still waiting for its Wii Sports moment.
