Look, Batman: Arkham Origins‘ developers would like very much to stamp out a few of the remaining bugs but they’ve been too busy working on the DLC story campaign and the important things it adds. Like a roasty-toasty new Batsuit for Bats and special heated Batgloves to keep his Batpaws warm on chilly evenings. They’re worried about young Master Bruce. Aren’t you too? You don’t want an orphan to freeze to death just so you can play a video game, do you? You monster.

See, the ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ DLC adds a new mini-campaign starring Mr. Freeze and his icy tricks, which means Batchap gets a few warming gadgets to fight back. Come have a gander what Warner Bros. is sacrificing support for in a new video developer diary doodad with a fine display of Batbiffing.

Cold, Cold Heart is an open-world, narrative-driven chunk of DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins, and it's due out on April 22 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Cold, Cold Heart tells the backstory of classic Batman villain Mr. Freeze in a brand new mission, and it gives Batman himself a new suit "that will actually change gameplay and help you be more resilient" against cryogenic weapons, according to WB Games VP of Production Ames Kirshen.

WB prioritized work on this DLC over fixing bugs, Community Manager "Mercury" said on the Arkham Origins support page earlier this month, and the studio canceled the Wii U version of Cold, Cold Heart in January, citing lack of demand. Since it was part of the Arkham Origins season pass, Nintendo of America offered full refunds to anyone who bought that bundle, even though some pieces of DLC had already launched.

And to those who had already guessed that Cold, Cold Heart would feature Mr. Freeze: The Penguin's heart is probably pretty chilly, too. It totally could have gone either way. [Image: WB Games]

Batman: Arkham Origins‘ superheroic antics were supremely so-so (not to mention glitchy as all get-out), but it wasn’t the only game in its lineage. Comparing Arkham Origins to Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is like comparing apples to (Arkham) oranges. Blackgate is a sidescroller that originally debuted on handhelds, but it does manage to contain trace elements of previous Arkham standouts. There’s similar combat, light stealth, and detective vision, but it’s all wrapped up in a traditional Metroidvania-style package. It’s also – depending on whom you talk to – kinda alright? Sort of? I haven’t played it, but perhaps I will soon. Trailer of the PC-bound “Deluxe Edition” below.

No, that headline isn’t backward. Maybe the reverse is happening in one of DC’s other million-billion (though no longer billion-finity) universes, but not this one. Batman: Arkham Origins swung into action bogged down by a slew of diabolical bugs and glitches – some of them game-breaking – and our own boy man wonder Adam grappled with a decent many. On the upside, there have been some patches, but even a cursory glance at various forums shows that progress-halting issues have yet to be eradicated. So then, why is developer Warner Bros Montreal already moving on? Infuriatingly, because it’s too busy making new things it would like you to spend money on.

The Batman: Arkham Origins support page is full of frustrated players after community manager "Mercury" wrote that the Origins development team would be focused on completing story DLC instead of fixing the game's numerous, game-breaking bugs.

"The team is currently working hard on the upcoming story DLC and there currently are no plans for releasing another patch to address the issues that have been reported on the forums," Mercury wrote. "If we do move forward with creating a new patch, it will try to address the progression blocking bugs for players, not the minor glitches that do not prevent one from continuing to play. The issues that are not progression blockers will unfortunately no longer be addressed."

Unfortunately, it's not the first bad news for bat-fans: those who purchsed Arkham Origins on Wii U recently had the story DLC for the game canceled.

A custom Clayface figurine, modeled after the character's portrayal in Batman: Arkham City, has been announced by DC Collectibles. There is no word on pricing or release date as of yet.

Clayface is 13 inches tall, making him the biggest figure in the line that pulls from the cast of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. That line includes a 7-inch Batman and other notable characters like The Penguin, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze and Solomon Grundy. Head past the break for a side-by-side look at the Clayface figure next to the Batman.

The latest game in the Arkham series, Batman: Arkham Origins, launched in late October. Origins, which serves as a prequel to the first two games developed by Rocksteady, was created by WB Games Montreal.

Warner Bros. has released an update for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of Batman: Arkham Origins adding the new competitive "Hunter, Hunted" mode to the game's online multiplayer component.

"Hunter, Hunted" is a 3v3v1 mode that throws three Bane thugs, three Joker henchmen, and one very pissed-off Batman into the same map for a chaotic team-based battle to the death. There are no respawns in this mode, making thugs especially fragile and keeping the stakes high throughout.

"Hunter, Hunted" is available as part of a free update, and follows up on the recent launch of Arkham Origins' Initiation DLC. The game's upcoming "Narrative DLC" pack will complete Arkham Origins' planned Season Pass content next year.

Batman: Arkham Origins wasn’t about the origins of Batman, nor was it particularly good. It did have Batman though, and that counts for a lot.

The Inititaion DLC adds challenge maps which tell the sort-of Origins of Batman, and thus don’t really star Batman, but a bearded Bruce Wayne. There’s a trailer and an explanation below.(more…)

The Batman Arkham Collection will arrive on November 22 in the UK, Warner Bros. announced today. The bundle packs the two Rocksteady-developed Arkham games, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City along with WB Games Montreal's Batman: Arkham Origins into one batsuit.

Arkham Asylum and Arkham City will both be included as download codes for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the collection, with the PS3 bundle also receiving the Knightfall DLC pack for Arkham Origins. The PC version of the bundle will feature Game of the Year editions of either game, which grants players bonus DLC like Harley Quinn's Revenge for Arkham City and six additional maps for Arkham Asylum. Those two games are in a bundle of their own, which GameStop unveiled in September. We've contacted Warner Bros. to see if the Arkham Collection will arrive in North America as well.

Headlining the weekend of savings from November 28 to November 30 are a pair of console deals: a 4GB Xbox 360 S bundle, which includes Kinect Sports Season Two and Kinect Adventures, for $190 and a 250GB PS3 system with The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins for $200.

Select current-gen games have also had their prices slashed. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Max Payne 3 are both down to $10; Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Splinter Cell: Blacklist are $25; and Battlefield 4, Batman: Arkham Origins and Madden NFL 25 are $35.

A portion of an NWR review...

Despite the fact that Arkham Origins sticks painfully close to the formula established by Arkham City, it’s still a wonderful game that Bat-fans will adore. And hey, when’s the last time you could say the Wii U version of a multiplatform game turned out to be the best one? It’s a point of pride, folks.
