Michael Abrash, the leader of Valve's Research and Development team, joined Oculus VR as chief scientist today. The news follows Oculus' recent acquisition by Facebook to the tune of $2 billion, which Abrash addressed, in a blog post on Oculus VR's site, as a promise that virtual reality "is going to happen in all its glory."

"The resources and long-term commitment that Facebook brings gives Oculus the runway it needs to solve the hard problems of VR - and some of them are hard indeed," Abrash wrote. "I now fully expect to spend the rest of my career pushing VR as far ahead as I can." As of January, Abrash was at the forefront of Valve's efforts to work with Oculus to develop in-home virtual reality solutions. Valve's VR leader, Atman Binstock, joined Oculus earlier this month to lead a new Seattle-based team as chief architect.

Abrash described his "unlikely" journey to Valve and now Oculus VR in the blog and his work with John Carmack, who joined Oculus in August as the company's CTO. Oculus' own path from a $2.5 million Kickstarter project to a $2 billion sale is equally remarkable, to be sure. [Image: Oculus VR]Valve R&D head Michael Abrash joins Oculus as chief scientist

Coming from Steel Empire dev, Yoshinori Satake...

I want to do it. I have an idea for a sequel titled 'Koutetsu Moyu' (something like 'Burning Steel', though its a bit of a play on words, since the 'yu' can also be read in this compound as 'oil' or 'fuel'). Steel Empire was a sepia-colored steampunk world, but this would be a dark, grey steampunk. I have an image for it like the old war movies […] I'd like to take the dark grey atmosphere of those movies and make a steampunk world out of it, using color, but with a monochrome feel from the desaturated colors and such. I think that would be an original steampunk world, and I've been drawing up plans for it to submit to Starfish.

Greetings friends! Russell here from Aksys Games. Today, we announced that our newest title from Acquire and Zero Div will be hitting PS Vita on May 27th! To celebrate, we’ve updated the Mind Zero website to give you a full rundown of the game, as well as posted a trailer. Mind Zero is a first-person dungeon crawler where you fight with your MINDs (literally and figuratively). We’re here today to touch upon the story and get into a bit more details about the battle mechanics of Mind Zero.

Kei is a normal high school student until his life turns upside down when he forms a contract with a MIND, a weapon/being with deadly powers. With the government and other forces trailing him and his friends, Kei will need to discover the secret behind MIND before it’s too late. Suspenseful stuff, right?

When you battle it out against the various other MINDs in the game, you’ll have a choice to duke it out by yourself, use your MIND, or do a bit of both. There lies the challenge and fun of Mind Zero. Not only will you have to think about protecting yourself, but your MIND as well.

When controlling Kei and other party members, players can do various things such as attack, use items, charge, escape, or burst. To highlight the non-obvious function, charging serves much like a “Defend,” however your MP will charge faster as you remain in this stance. “Burst” is a cool technique in Mind Zero that, when used, speeds up to your turn, thereby allowing you to get a hit, use an item, or heal sooner.

MINDs are powerful creatures and can serve players well in the heat of battle. Players are given several options when using their MIND — attack, skill, and burst. Players can assign various skills as they gain more experience. But if you use a MIND, you automatically lose some MP. Beware, because if your MP is drained, your MIND will retreat (called a “MIND Break”) and you’ll need to wait until you have enough MP to summon it again.

So what does all this information mean? Strategy! Use your MIND and your party members wisely and you can defeat any foe.

For more details, be sure to check out the Mind Zero website! Mind Zero will be shipping to retail stores and released digitally on May 27th.

A portion of a 4cr review...

Bubble Pop World is a great release that gives you a good reason to get out the AR card that was included with our 3DS. The color-match mechanic as the main gameplay hook means that it is very easy to pick-up-and-play, and it features a lot of content for a low price. I spent several hours playing all of the levels, and I was very happy with the results.
