A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

Those looking to experience a little schadenfreude at Miyamoto’s failed creation may find Devil World interesting, but those just after a good time are better off looking elsewhere.

After an explosion allows some of Gotham City’s most wicked villains to seize control of Blackgate Prison, Batman enters the fray to return order to the once-high security prison in a unique story set three months after the events of Batman: Arkham Origins. The Joker, Penguin and Black Mask have each carved up their own turf within the walls, and with several other strong enemies also haunting the halls, it’s going to be a long, dark night for the Caped Crusader in Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate – Deluxe Edition, available from Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

The Dark Knight can grapple, glide, crouch and clamber around Blackgate Prison, surprising enemies with gadgets such as explosive gel or his trusty Batarang. Seek out hidden objects by switching into Detective Mode, and collect equipment to open up new routes and areas to explore. Players can take on the line-up of supervillains in any order that they choose, but beware – some foes will be tougher to defeat without certain tools strapped to your utility belt!

Free-flowing combat has been completely redesigned for the side-scrolling viewpoint, with enemies waiting in the wings before jumping into full-force fisticuffs. Batman can also take a more stealthy approach, lurking in dark corners before striking in silence or triggering a variety of hidden traps. Activate Predator Mode and you can even see exactly where enemies are looking – or how close you are to being detected.

Explore Blackgate Prison in high definition, using the new isometric map and hint system to find your way around and track your objectives more easily than before. Choose to display the map on the Wii U GamePad, or continue the adventure even when the television isn't available with off-TV play.

A unique storyline set three months after Batman: Arkham Origins, told through hand-drawn cut scenes with full voice acting
Explore Blackgate Prison in high definition using the new map and hint system
Experience the series’ fast, fluid combat from a 2D perspective
Navigate Blackgate Prison and take on villains in any order with Batman’s wide array of gadgets

@YouOldSoAndSo probably not, but likely Steam, PS4/Vita and possibly 3DS depending on the CPU/GPU requirements.

It’s not quite April 1st yet, so I guess this is happening. Oculus VR, the daringly sexy eyeware fashion company/hobbyist virtual reality outlet has officially been purchased by, um, Facebook, of all things. It sort of makes sense, I suppose, given that VR stands to radically alter the way people communicate from long distances, and that seems to be Facebook’s focus here. Problem is, the social media goliath sent out a press release that’s full of bits like, “mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow” and hey wasn’t Oculus Rift a PC gaming device at one point? Also John Carmack works for Facebook now, and that’s just weeeeeeeeird.

A portion of a VentureBeat interview with Damon Baker, Nintendo’s senior manager of licensing marketing...

GamesBeat: You guys don’t talk too much about these types of indie games.

Baker: We’re trying to. That’s my job. I have to convince the powers that be about all of the great content and why we need to amplify those messages and put them in the same light with Mario. I think it is safe to say that E3 this year for Nintendo there is going to be every emphasis on Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. There’s going to be a lot of first-party exposure there, but for us, last year was the first year we got indie content into our booth — and then we took it one step further with PAX Prime, then took it even further with IndieCade, and now we’re here at GDC showing as well. So I think you will continue to see an emphasis or a priority in showcasing and display indie content.

GamesBeat: Part of the reason I bring this up is because Nintendo has been really good at releasing a home system and then somehow tying their portable system into it. When the Nintendo DS first came out, one of the thoughts that popped into my head was, “WTH are they going to do as far as this integration. There are two screens.” And then when the Wii U came out, I was like, “OK. This.” I can now see developers creating a 3DS and a Wii U title at the same time.

Baker: That makes a lot of sense, but the architectures for those devices are so completely different that we haven’t really made it conducive. I know there is a lot of interest in bringing Unity over to 3DS, which would solve a lot of these problems. You go to any developer conferences, and you ask what engine are people using, and 90 percent of them are using Unity right now. So it would be a huge shortcut to bring it to Wii U, press a button, and then have it available for 3DS but … we’re not anywhere near [that].

GamesBeat: Oh, yeah. I definitely don’t think this is something that can auto-magically happen.

Baker: Yeah, we are working on that. We are working with other middleware providers as well — nothing to announce right now — but we are trying to make it as easy and as intuitive [as Wii U and Unity].

GamesBeat: Unreal engine?

Baker: Possibly … I mean we have content from Unreal that people have brought over, stuff like Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut. We showed that off at previous events, that was done in Unreal. So there are opportunities to bring that over but we haven’t built specific support for it. So it’s if anybody creates their own engine, they are kind of on their own as far as figuring out how to get it onto our Wii U platform.

You know, a lot of [indie Unity Wii U developers] were surprised, bringing [their project] over to Wii U with a button that compiles it and within a minute they’ve got a game running. It’s not optimized, but it’s running on a Wii U and on the Gamepad, and it’s this shocking moment of, “Oh my God, that was really easy”. The tough part is over. Now you need to tweak it.

Here's one you probably didn't see coming.

Facebook announced today that it is acquiring Oculus VR, creators of the still-in-development Oculus Rift VR headset, for $2 billion in cash and shares of Facebook stock. Go ahead, take a moment to process that. Facebook now owns Oculus Rift.

"Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow," Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the company's official press statement. "Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate."

"We are excited to work with Mark and the Facebook team to deliver the very best virtual reality platform in the world," said Brendan Iribe, co-founder and CEO of Oculus VR. "We believe virtual reality will be heavily defined by social experiences that connect people in magical, new ways. It is a transformative and disruptive technology, that enables the world to experience the impossible, and it's only just the beginning."

The Oculus Rift has been in development since 2012, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that netted the company nearly $2.5 million in funding. The Rift has only been available in dev kit form thus far, with the final consumer model expected to hit the marketplace in late 2014/early 2015. Most recently, the company retained the services of longtime id Software figurehead John Carmack for the role of chief technology officer.

And now Facebook owns Oculus Rift. Facebook. Anyone else having a hard time parsing this one?

Japanese Hatsune Miku fans (of which there are a few) are no doubt picking up Project Diva F 2nd later this week, but they're not the only ones who'll see the virtual popstar make a return to gaming systems this year. Sega announced today it's bringing the rhythm game sequel West this fall, and this time it's releasing packaged versions on both platforms.

The synthesized idol's sequel follows the formula of the first game, with players ensuring Hatsune Miku doesn't short circuit any of her notes by tapping buttons in time to match those zipping across the screen. Project Diva F 2nd features 40 songs in total (or at least we presume the base game does) including some only previously found in Japanese releases.

We can expect more specific details, perhaps including release dates, as we get closer to this year's E3 conference at the beginning of June. [Image: Sega]
