The rules have changed for superhero movies. Any studio that's serious about being in the game is openly trying to copy Marvel's comic-book-esque strategy of a shared universe and an interlocking series of series, with crossovers. But which studio is most likely to succeed in grabbing at Marvel's crown?Read more...

Capcom slashed its net profit forecast by 50 percent, citing expenses in improving its business structure as a key factor.

A new investor's note from the company confirmed the massive reduction to its forecast from ¥6.8 billion to ¥3.3 billion for the full fiscal year. The company states it experienced an unexpected ¥5 billion in business costs concerning "business structural improvement expenses," designed to improve Capcom's financial performance.

Phil Spencer is the new head of Xbox, which now includes the Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios teams. He's been with Microsoft for 25 years, starting as a programmer, but his focus has always been on Xbox, he tells Joystiq in a phone interview.

"What I think Xbox is about, is those core gaming fans that are out there, and franchises they know and love, and creating new franchises that they'll fall in love with in the future," Spencer says.

He describes his approach to Xbox as all about the games: "They're putting a gaming person at the head of the division in me, as the head of Xbox. The Xbox brand has always been a gaming brand. People with their consoles use the entertainment offerings of the console every day - something that we will focus on. But I definitely come to this platform with a gaming focus, and I want to make sure that's what your readers hear, and they understand that Xbox is a gaming brand."

By reputation, Spencer is a little more Gears of War, while his predecessor, Marc Whitten, was a little more Angry Birds. Spencer laughs at this comparison. "Is it better to be Angry Birds or Gears of War?"

Spencer says he has relationships with companies across the gaming spectrum, calling out third parties such as EA and Activision, games such as Angry Birds and Clash of Clans, and studios in the ID@Xbox program. The new, all-encompassing Xbox division will support creators, he says.

"Bringing the teams closer together creates that tight feedback loop between platform and content that I think can create unique assets for us as we think about continuing to push the Xbox creative platform forward for all the people out there," Spencer says.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M35s were previously listed as one one the "best deals in tech" by Gizmodo Editorial, and today they're available for an all-time low price of $49, which makes them an even better deal... in tech... and in general. These cans are the younger sibling of the ATH-M50s, which are a favorite among the Commerce Team, Gizmodo/Lifehacker Editorial, the Gawker office, and reviewers and consumers around the web. The ATH-M35s carry Audio-Technicas style and quality along with an impulse price tag. [Amazon]Read more...

Funcom haven’t had a smooth ride of late. The Secret World performed under expectations (although these were expectations based on their delusionally thinking they could charge a box price and subscription for a new IP MMO), and in January they were briefly suspended from trading as their offices were raided. That cannot have been fun. However, things appear to be back on track now, and last week they were showing off their next MMO, LEGO Minifigures Online. It could well be a much needed cash cow for the milking. I sat down and had a play of the family-friendly brick-me-do.

A portion of a NWR interview with Ludosity's Joel Nyström...

NWR: This game has been released on various other platforms. What's your personal favorite version to play and why?

JN: My favorite version is actually the Wii U version. Being the last and final version of the game, it has a little more love and polish than the other versions, plus it has some nice features the others don't have.

NWR: And aside from the GamePad, will it support other controllers?

JN: There's also support for both the Pro and the Classic controller.

NWR: When can we expect to see Ittle and Tippsie on the Wii U eShop?

JN: The game is finally in submission now, so it shouldn't be long now. But we've said that for a long time, and for various reasons out of our control it has been delayed many times, so I'll hold off on promising a set date this time.

We chose to go with turn based combat, first and foremost, because we all have fond memories of playing games featuring turn based combat. We wanted a strategic approach to combat and to let the players be able to take the time to think about their next move rather than stressing them out with active time hybrid models or real time combat. There is nothing wrong with either of the latter models, but we feel that turn based combat is a good fit for Earthlock.

Turn based combat: plan your moves rather than reacting
Combat Pairs access unique pair abilities
Chaining of elemental attacks
Enemy states change during combat
Full control over all pairs during combat
