No Halo movie in sight, but a 'digital feature' is coming this year

Microsoft's monolithic Halo franchise has yet to make it to movie theaters, but that hasn't stopped protagonist Master Chief from stomping onto other, shorter pieces of film. Microsoft and 343 Industries have vaguely announced a new Halo "digital feature project" to be released in 2014, and for all we know it could be a web-series, extravagant commercial, music video or a P90X video designed to wreak havoc on cybernetic glutes. It doesn't sound like a movie, however, and it will likely to be available online.

Dropping Ridley Scott's name certainly helps: Scott, last seen in cinemas with The Councelor and Prometheus and wait-don't-go Blade Runner, is the executive producer on this project, while Sergio Mimica-Gezzan directs. Mimica-Gezzan directed some episodes of Battlestar Galactica, not including (phew) "Scar" or "Black Market," as well as Heroes and Under the Hood.

Microsoft isn't confirming any more details regarding this Halo endeavor, but stresses that it won't hassle the "premium" Halo show underway at Xbox Entertainment Studios, namely the television series attached to Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg.

The most recent bits of live-action Halo came in the form of "Scanned," a David Fincher-produced short promoting Halo 4 (seen above), and that game's preceding web-series, Forward Unto Dawn. [Image: Microsoft Game Studios]

Those that follow crowdfunded gaming projects know the drill: As most developers' Kickstarter deadlines draw near, they like to remind you to pledge your monetary support so their visions can come to life, enticing you to do so by offering concept art or videos. In the case of Frog Fractions developer Twinbeard, with a week left to go in its Frog Fractions 2 campaign, it opted to launch a brief adventure game called Kickstarter Simulator 2015.

Kickstarter Simulator 2015 is a browser-based "autobiographical game about running Kickstarters" that features videos of real-life friends of Frog Fractions creator Jim Crawford. Players click on the actors to keep them on track with the zany crowdfunding project so that it sees success a week from today. The point-and-click game is as quirky and hilarious as one might expect from Twinbeard, so it's worth checking out on the developer's site. The Frog Fractions 2 campaign is just under $9,000 away from its goal and ends on Wednesday, April 9. [Image: Twinbeard]

Join Kirby on a new adventure for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems - complete with colourful worlds and hidden collectibles galore!

3rd April 2014 - A magical tale of a giant Dreamstalk and the kidnapping of a king awaits on 17th May when Kirby: Triple Deluxe releases for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. In order to mark the imminent return to action for this famous pink hero, Nintendo has today revealed a new colourway to its Nintendo 2DS staple in the form of Nintendo 2DS Pink + White*, giving fans the choice to represent the Kirby colours when gaming on the go.

Nintendo 2DS Pink + White will launch on the same day as Kirby: Triple Deluxe, 17th May, and in true Kirby style, presents itself in an eye-catching pink design, complete with a white stripe across the side and back of the system. Also accompanying the release of Nintendo 2DS Pink + White will be a new silver Nintendo 2DS Carrying Case, available for purchase separately from 17th May.

Nintendo 2DS first launched in October 2013, retaining many of the hardware features of Nintendo 3DS including the same intuitive gameplay controls and wireless connectivity features for access to local and online multiplayer gameplay, Nintendo eShop and more. Bringing family-friendly value and a huge software catalogue to boot, Nintendo 2DS is an entry point into or a new way to enjoy the Nintendo handheld experience, and allows fans to play all Nintendo 3DS games in 2D.

Similarly ideal for both novice and experienced gamers alike, Kirby: Triple Deluxe provides a platforming experience full of colourful landscapes and enemies big and small for Kirby to inhale, including certain foes which he can suck up and then copy their unique abilities! Whether adopting an ability such as the Circus or the Bell, 25 different Copy Abilities found in the game allow players to dress up Kirby in all manner of different looks, with each ability possessing its own special powers and unusual combination moves. One particularly magical new ability of Kirby's is the Hypernova, acquired after finding and gobbling up a Miracle Fruit within a level. A temporarily powered-up version of his usual inhale ability, the Hypernova allows Kirby to suck up huge obstacles and even entire sections of a level that lie in his way.

Aside from playing as Kirby and unravelling the mystery of the Dreamstalk and the kidnapping of King Dedede by a shadowy being, players can discover more than 250 Key Chains in-game, many of which pay homage to the Kirby series, and which can be exchanged with friends via StreetPass encounters. In addition, game modes in Kirby: Triple Deluxe such as Dedede's Drum Dash add an extra dimension to the Kirby-themed action. As King Dedede, players are tasked with taking on rhythm-based time trials set against the tune of iconic music from the Kirby franchise. Meanwhile for fans of fun multiplayer action, Kirby Fighters is a competitive battle mode that can be enjoyed as a single-player experience or via the Nintendo 3DS family of systems' Download Play feature**, enabling up to four friends to play together, and requiring only one player to own a copy of the game to make it happen!

Nintendo 2DS goes pink on 17th May when Nintendo 2DS Pink + White releases on the same day as Kirby's new adventure in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

Reign of Giants expands Don't Starve with new creatures, seasons

The dark, foreboding wilderness of open-world survival adventure Don't Starve just grew a bit more eerie with today's debut of the Reign of Giants DLC expansion.

Once installed, players will find a Reign of Giants content toggle on the Don't Starve main menu. Activating this option enables the DLC content, and allows players to unlock new characters, new items, new seasons and new biomes. As you'd expect, these new regions of the game also bring with them new creatures who may serve as delicious meals, or the final straw straining your in-game sanity until your pixelated brain bursts into a kaleidoscope of swelling shadows and horrible beasts.

Though today brings Reign of Giants to the PC, Mac and Linux incarnations of Don't Starve, those enjoying the game on PlayStation 4 will be waiting a bit for their version of the DLC. It's unknown how long this delay will be, but developer Klei Entertainment promises to reveal more info on the PS4 release soon. [Image: Klei Entertainment]

You Don't Know Jack dev brings two games to Amazon Fire TV

While the Amazon Fire TV is "absolutely not a game console," developers such as Telltale Games and now Jackbox Games are already supporting the media-streaming device. The Chicago-based developer launched both You Don't Know Jack Party and a new trivia party game Fibbage for free on the Fire TV today. You Don't Know Jack Party first arrived on iOS last fall.

Fibbage, like You Don't Know Jack Party, uses smartphones and tablets as game controllers while linking up with the Fire TV for big-screen multiplayer sessions. In it, up to eight players trick one another by filling in the blanks of trivia statements with lies as they see fit. Each round of play lasts seven questions and includes special categories like "Celebrity Tweets" and "Road Trip."

The free version of Fibbage offers a "handful" of questions, while the paid upgrade of Fibbage brings with it hundreds more. Jackbox didn't offer a price for the upgraded version, though it noted plans to launch DLC for the game in the future. Amazon just announced (and launched) the Fire TV today for $99. Ether One studio in talks to bring first-person thriller to PS4

Ether One, the first-person, mind-plundering thriller from White Paper Games, may bring its special brand of brain-busting to PS4, designer Pete Bottomley told Joystiq during our livestream this week.

"Officially at the weekend I found out that I could say that we are licensed Sony developers," Bottomley said. "I met with Guy [Richards] from SCEE at the weekend when we were at Rezzed. The guys at Sony have just been awesome, so so nice, just always checking in and seeing how development is going. So we were chatting at the weekend about possible PlayStaiton 4, so we're gonna look into that."

Bottomley adds that there is "nothing confirmed yet," but the option is on the table.

In Ether One, players are Restorers, professionals able to jump into the minds of people suffering from mental disorders. The patient you're helping this time around has dementia, and as a Restorer, you must traverse the person's memories, collecting red ribbons scattered around the landscape to repair that mind. It's part puzzle, part exploration, and the ending hides a surprising twist that we found to be brilliantly pretentious (in a good way).
