In Tomodachi Life for Nintendo 3DS, Mii Characters Join Your Dream-World Starring Your Real-World Friends

“Tomodachi” is the Japanese word for “friend.” After completely customizing all your Mii characters, from their voices and appearances right down to their personality quirks, you’ll recognize them instantly. But you can’t possibly predict what they’ll do next. For the first time ever, Mii characters behave based on the personality traits you select, playing out the drama you set in motion. A celebrity might fall in love with your math teacher. Your mom might jump on stage to belt out heavy metal songs. Or you could become famous striking poses down the runway of a fashion show wearing cute and silly outfits. Best of all, you can document these unbelievable moments for posterity and share them all with your friends via the Nintendo 3DS Image Share service.

Even your far-fetched celebrity dreams can come true in Tomodachi Life. If you have ever wanted international superstar Christina Aguilera to join you in a sing-off, or believed that she would become BFFs with your cousin or wished she would perform a song with your customized lyrics, it could happen here. The multi award-winning singer has signed on to be a part of Nintendo’s promotional campaign for the game, and her Mii character will be available at launch. Aguilera’s Mii character also will guest star in a TV commercial and in online videos that show all the exciting things that happen when celebrities mingle with Miis players know personally. The plot of Tomodachi Life thickens with the addition of each Mii character. As they deliver one gripping twist and turn after another, you can reward them with in-game gifts and clothes, their favorite foods or special flourishes for their apartments. Together you can further broaden your Tomodachi Life horizons by exploring the island, solving characters’ problems and helping them with their needs.

SOMA didn’t scare the scuba suit off me, but I did find a creeping sort of potential in its soaked-to-the-bone corridors. Amnesia: The Dark Descent 2 this ain’t. Or at least, it’s not aiming to be. Currently, it still feels a lot like a slower-paced, less-monster-packed Amnesia in a different (though still very traditionally survival-horror-y) setting, but Frictional creative director Thomas Grip has big plans. I spoke with him about how he hopes to evolve the game, inevitable comparisons to the Big Daddy of gaming’s small undersea pond, BioShock, why simple monster AI is better than more sophisticated options, the mundanity of death, and how SOMA’s been pretty profoundly influenced by indie mega-hits like Dear Esther and Gone Home.

Jim spotted Vektropolis back in 2012, and then there was nothing. Well, that’s not strictly true. There was nothing from the developers about the game, but in general terms stuff did occur, and you all lived through it. Now Vektropolis is happening again, joining the world as a bouncing baby Kickstarter game, and looking for £50,000 to fund what looks to be a city-defense, open-world sort of G-Police thing. Genre-ific.

Look, Batman: Arkham Origins‘ developers would like very much to stamp out a few of the remaining bugs but they’ve been too busy working on the DLC story campaign and the important things it adds. Like a roasty-toasty new Batsuit for Bats and special heated Batgloves to keep his Batpaws warm on chilly evenings. They’re worried about young Master Bruce. Aren’t you too? You don’t want an orphan to freeze to death just so you can play a video game, do you? You monster.

Wasteland 2 might be in its “final stretch” of development, but that doesn’t mean all systems are go just yet. inXile is still hard at work on ironing out kinks, smoothing rough edges, and even overhauling the entire inventory system. The mighty kicker of starters does, however, have an estimate of how long a single playthrough will last you: 50 hours. Exploring all locations and missions, however, will take “quite a bit longer.” One such location? The entirety of Los Angeles (and outlying areas), which is not part of the ongoing beta. If you think Wasteland’s been looking a little too, er, wasteland-y, this ought to make you gleeful as Aberforth, the goat Alec nearly murdered.

Just a few years ago, people were begging for the System Shock 2 legal situation to be resolved. It wasn’t a technical problem, but a legal death trap of rights that entangled its feet, keeping it just out of grasp as we all reached out to save it. And then it was suddenly in our hands, and we could all have the game on the digital distribution platform of our choosing. With that resolved, it seemed that the story of System Shock 2 was over. But wait *shocking twist music*, like a hand shooting out of a grave, there’s one final moment for SS2 to surprise us: a new update that lands it on Linux. It is available right now on Steam.
