A portion of a Gamasutra interview with Ubisoft's Jeffrey Yohalem...

GS: This is the first time I've seen Ubisoft Montreal field a small team. What's it been like to work in that environment, after serving on larger teams? Do you think you or Ubisoft will continue to work this way going forward?

JY: I think that, at least in terms of the process that we went through with Child of Light, it’s been wonderful and it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what we could do. Partially because I’m so used to working in big teams, and so I’m just getting a sense of the new scale.

GS: Given your history, how did development of this game differ from larger Ubisoft productions, like Far Cry or Assassin's Creed?

JY: Pat is a great game director. He’s like Hitchcock, in some ways -- he really understands the system of how large companies work, and at the same time wants to dance within that system. He doesn’t want to destroy it or do something that attacks it -- he knows how to use the system to make beautiful things.

He finished Far Cry 3 while I was still editing it, and he started exploring the paintings of John Bauer and other early 20th century fairytale artists. They have a very distinctive mood, it’s very melancholy and beautiful, and he decided he wanted to create something like that. So he started listening to music -- from Amelie, from Final Fantasy, and more -- and tried to create a fake album of what the game’s soundtrack should be like.

I counted them: There are loads of bloodsoaked murders in the new trailer for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Okay, I've watched it a few times and it's so fast-paced I'm still not sure, but I think there are at least 30 of them in there. Considering all the action takes place in the video's middle 30 seconds, that's some properly time-efficient ultra-violence.

For all of that, the trailer also has that darker edge that developer Dennaton Games has talked about bringing to the sequel. The studio promises things like more weapons and more enemies in Wrong Number, but it wants to put greater emphasis on the narrative.

"We want to work with other feelings than just being disturbed or feeling awesome," Dennaton's Denis Wedin told us at last year's E3 conference. "They're still in there, a lot of disturbed stuff and things to make the player feel great when they finish a stage, but we also want to see if we can add some bit of sadness to the game. This is the last game; it's the finale for Hotline Miami. We're gonna work with how you cope with things ending. All of our characters in the game, they're all going to meet the end of their mission or life or dreams. We're going to see how you cope with that."

We first caught wind of an upcoming dual-GPU Hawaii graphics card this time last month when AMD teased us with its top-secret "Two is Better Than One" campaign. Although AMD didn't actually reveal anything, it was clearly planning a successor to the Radeon HD 7990, which is essentially two Tahiti dies on a single board, or in other words a pair of slightly underclocked Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition GPUs.Read more...

My favourite part of every MMORPG is almost inevitably its character creator. EVE Online aside, I’ve found styling virtual dolls more fun than their attempts to hook me into dull lifeless worlds and dreams of becoming a hero. A good character creator is worth the download alone and oh my, I’ll certainly give Black Desert a go if it comes westward.

A new video from the F2P South Korean MMORPG shows off the finest character creator I’ve seen since APB, including squillions of sliders to tweak a dozen different parts of the face, squish around body shapes, style hair like a pro, and even give characters heterochromia with star-shaped pupils like some sort of glam rock Dr. Quinn.

Though Fortnite has been in relatively quiet development for years, Epic Games has apparently decided that now is the time to drag the game into the light of public scrutiny. To that end, the publisher has launched a website for the game and put out a call for testers.

Those unfamiliar with Fortnite can think of it as a cross between Minecraft and the "Horde" gameplay type in Gears of War. The fundamental goal of Fortnite has players gathering resources and building defensible forts to keep out hordes of monsters. Once the attack inevitably comes, Fortnite more closely resembles a traditional third-person shooter, where players navigate their cobbled-together homes while gunning down invaders. Fortnite also offers online gameplay where multiple players have to work together to build and defend strongholds, as well as player-crafted weaponry.

While Fortnite is still a ways off, the game's new website is seeking participants for an upcoming alpha test. If you'd like to join, visit the Fortnite site and fill out the standard registration form. [Image: Epic Games]

A portion of a NWR review...

Metroid Fusion is a fun adventure in the franchise and a must have for fans of the series. The gameplay is smooth, the graphics look great, and the story is not to be missed. While there is some minor slowdown and the entire experience is a bit short, these are minor missteps when looking at the entire picture.
