This weekend, evil takes hold of our Bethesda Booth at PAX East in Boston, MA. Throughout the day, we’ll be doing the first North American public demonstrations of The Evil Within – the new survival horror game developed by Shinji Mikami and his Tango Gameworks team based in Tokyo, Japan. During the demo, the game’s main protagonist, Sebastian Castellanos, will square off against one of the game’s most terrifying creatures: Boxman.

Be sure to stop by our booth and check out the presentation. And if you happen to dress up with The Evil Within cosplay, we’ll reward you with a spot in the front of the line.

Can’t make PAX? Be sure to watch our new PAX East trailer for a glimpse of the Boxman boss battle.

Stay tuned for more info on The Evil Within – coming to both PS4 and PS3 on August 26th.

VoidExpanse strikes me somewhat as an inevitability. The years of Eve coupled with Elite and Star Citizen’s stratospheric success means a lower budget, retro-styled take on the same idea was viable. Its isometric viewpoint sets it apart from those peers, as does its extremely unpolished, early access state. As with any member of the space trading, exploring, bang-banging massive, the promise of the final game is an incredibly enticing one. The difficulty is seeing through the crashes, balance issues and unfinished mechanics to judge its core worth. VoidExpanse made that especially challenging, but there’s hope.

Drakengard 3 is drawing ever closer, as we’ve made evident today by revealing our third and final wave of pre-order bonuses. If you’ve already pre-ordered the game, you’ve got this coming, but if not, you can pre-order today and get six free themes featuring Zero, Mikhail, and the game’s four Disciples: Cent, Octa, Decadus, and Dito. If the game’s Intoner Sisters are more your thing, fear not: each Disciple theme actually has three panels in its rotation, one of which showcases them with their Intoner masters. So it’s worth pointing out that technically you’re getting all the main characters, except One…

Speaking of Intoner sisters, we’ve also updated the selections of our prequel novella on www.drakengardgame.com to include Two, Three, Four, and Five. While we’ll release a few more chapters down the road, the paperback edition included in the Collector’s Edition is the only way to read the entirety of the fiction.

13586978724_8875f4755c_n.jpg13586600615_c4b1ed9e7c_n.jpg

These chapters starring Zero’s sisters are too good not to share though, giving readers a glimpse into the personality of each one before you meet them in the game. They’re quite a charming bunch, but I won’t spoil your reading pleasure by giving out any more details than that.

We’ve also posted a new behind-the-scenes interview with Character Artist Kimihiko Fujisaka. He’s been designing for the Drakengard series since the beginning, and you can really get a sense of how excited he is to resume the project after its eight year hiatus. He points out a lot of things you may not have noticed about the game, such as how the new characters are done in a more modern style and are contrasted against enemies that retain the series’ medieval roots. He’s an incredibly talented artist, so I hope you’ll check out what he has to say.

Finally, I’d like to announce that Drakengard 3 is now available to pre-order on Amazon.com and other participating retailers. While the Japanese VO, Nier Pack, and PSN themes are exclusive to those who pre-order through the Square Enix Online Store, these retailers have their own unique pre-order bonus, with three costume variations for Zero.

I’m sure Ubisoft’s enticingly open racer The Crew will provide oodles of entertainment if I can just make it past the title screen without face-planting into my steering wheel due to paralytic title-born boredom coma. The Crew sounds like the most generic thing in the world, and in some ways it looks the part too. The promise of having the entirety of the (truncated) United States open for traversal, however, is simply too tempting to resist. I am conflicted but hopeful. It’ll be out this fall, and there’s a new trailer below.

Borderlands is in the wonderful business of providing goods and guns to insatiable looters. Dubbed the best-selling game in publisher 2K's history, Borderlands 2 refines a gaming bear trap of Diablo-esque questing and shooting, sending up to four friends across the craggy planet of Pandora in search of treasure, weapons and mightier bosses to topple. It's the perfect platform for more, more, more, and Gearbox Software has delivered big and small expansions breathlessly.

Some level of self-awareness has always pervaded Borderland's sense of humor, but the title of the newest game, developed in collaboration between 2K Australia and Gearbox, is the strongest instance of it yet. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! - exclamation and all - is a laughing deflection of whatever criticisms you might have in the quiver. It's not quite as big as Borderlands 2, no. It's not rethinking the franchise. It's the same engine on the same ol' Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It's filling in the backstory between games. But, y'know, it's not like Randy Pitchford's been calling it Borderlands 3! (He hasn't, honest.)

I get the sense that fans are still getting more than the game's pre-emptive modesty implies, and that even a basic plan of "more Borderlands" grew into something slightly more ambitious. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel takes players to the low-gravity environment of the moon and the Hyperion space base that's watched over them on Pandora, and it finally lets them see things (and shoot things) as a short, eccentric robot - Claptrap.

More Borderlands? Yes please!

2K just announced Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, a new entry in the awesome/ridiculous/ridiculously-awesome FPS series from Gearbox. It takes place between Borderlands 1 and 2, and explores the rise of the latter’s charmingly sadistic villain: Handsome Jack. Oh, and it’s on the moon.

Offensive opportunities will be plentiful, with new laser-based and “Cryo” weapons joining the already gargantuan armory present on Pandora, and you can play as one of four new characters — including Claptrap.

Read on for full details about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, straight from 2K.

13727740364_939fc52315_z.jpg

Handsome Jack is back with a whole new cast of playable characters and he’s taking you to the moon of Pandora in the next standalone AAA game in 2K’s best-selling franchise – Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. 2K announced today that the game is being co-developed by Gearbox Software and 2K Australia, and will be available later this fall for the PlayStation 3. See, aren’t you glad you kept your PS3!?

Narratively, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel takes place between the original Borderlands game and Borderlands 2. For the very first time, you’ll play on the other side as four new playable characters fighting alongside Handsome Jack, and you’ll witness Jack’s transformation into the megalomaniacal tyrant that you loved to hate in Borderlands 2. Fans of the franchise will no doubt remember some of these characters from past games. There’s Athena – The Gladiator, Wilhelm – The Enforcer, Nisha – The Lawbringer, and Claptrap – The Fragtrap. That’s right, you can play as THE Claptrap! Oh, and did we mention that you’re fighting on the moon!?

Pandora’s moon is called Elpis, and it’s inhabited by a whole bunch of new baddies – Scavengers, Lunatics, giant bandits in 70s-era NASA spacesuits – you know, the type you’d enjoy blasting off the surface of the moon. And that’s just it, because you’re off of Pandora, gravity is different and so is the atmosphere. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has an all-new oxygen system that not only allows you to breathe in the moon’s zero-atmosphere environments, it gives you an oxygen-powered jetpack that enables you to perform insanely long moon jumps, or even double jumps. Combining your double jump with the crouch button performs a ground-pounding slam that deals area of effect damage, and can also deal crazy elemental damage. Oxygen is a lootable resource just like ammo, which has been plentiful in past Borderlands games, so you don’t have to fear that you’ll run out.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Borderlands game without gazillions of new guns, but not just guns, all-new weapon and elemental damage types. In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, you’ll shoot ‘n’ loot with laser guns – the type that ‘pew pew’ like in Star Wars, and the type that shoot continuous beams like in Ghostbusters. You’ll also freeze bandits in their place and shatter them into hundreds of bloody pieces using an array of Cryo weapons. Cryo is an all-new elemental damage type, and the combination of fire from laser and ice from Cryo has us itching to jump back into Borderlands.

What do you think? Are you excited to jump around Pandora’s moon, blasting bandits in the face with laser guns? Let us know in the comments below. Also, if you’re headed to PAX East this weekend, you have a chance to get a first look at Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in action at 2K’s booth #962.

Yesterday I was shown around half an hour of footage from the new Borderlands game, which everyone already knew about as it got leaked on Monday. Here’s what it’s all about.

I’m pretty sure we’re not supposed to take the messy portmanteau ‘Pre-Sequel’ too seriously, given Borderlands’ traditionally derisive-about-everything tone. So while it’s playful rather than the latest ‘expandalone’ or ‘freemium’ or whatever the latest newspeak horror someone’s marketing department has retched up, let’s just hope no-one else is inspired by it and we don’t find ourselves drowning in pre-sequels by this time next year.

Yes, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a brand-ish new Borderlands game, and due out somewhere around the tail end of this year. More importantly, it’s set on the moon and features jetpacks. … [visit site to read more]

It’s testament to Armello that as someone with very little experience of board games, upon seeing it running I was immediately entranced. The tabletop-inspired PC game is a vividly alive and remarkably gorgeous turn-based hexxy strategy, that would normally be the sort of thing I’d walk right past. But when it was on display in GDC’s indie quarters this year, I not only didn’t walk right past, but stopped and stared and chatted for ages. And that’s not least because the game will offer a single-player role-playing adventure for soloists like me, as well as cross-platform (PC and eventually tablet) multiplayer for more sociable types. You can see it running below. Oh, and there’s a Kickstarter.

This week's PSN update brings PlayStation systems the the smallest of people in their smallest versions, courtesy of the newly released Lego: The Hobbit. It's out at retailers for PS4, PS3, and Vita, but if you'd prefer a download version it's also on the PlayStation Store.

That'll set you back $60 on PS4, $50 on PS3 and $30 on Vita, so if you're after the smaller of prices, King Oddball at $7 might pick your fancy. The physics-based puzzler has an Angry Birds flavor, except it has a floating rock head who chucks smaller rocks around with his bizarrely long tongue. Oh and he has a crown on his head. It's been out on Vita for a little while as well as iOS, Android, and a few other platforms, but this is its debut on PS4.

PS4 also has the new Director's Cut of Strike Suit Zero for $20, while the PS3 makes do with a Sonic Unleashed download for the same price. If you're after a more palatable vintage, Persona 4 is this week's PS2 Classic re-release, meaning you can get it on PS3 for $10.

Finally, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark is the latest PS Plus freebie for subscribers, and Episode 3 of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us is available to PS3 owners, priced at $5. [Image: Atlus]

In an alternate dimension, we all love Uplay dearly and Valve won’t stop shoehorning Steam into annual churned-out sequels like Left 47 Dead, Team Fortress XII: Right Back Hat Ya, and Half-Life: Pirates. In this one, however, that’s absolutely not the case. Uplay is fiddly, sometimes catastrophic meltdown-prone bloatware that gates us from playing games until we’ve gone through an archaic activation and update process. And if servers happen to be down due to demand or some other mishap? Well, good luck. The service’s worst days, I think, are generally behind it, but it’s still a pain. Unsurprisingly, it’s going to show up in Watch_Dogs, presumably to do the opposite of aidin’ main character Aiden Pearce.
