The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog has teamed up with publisher Dark Horse Comics to produce The Art of Naughty Dog, a compendium featuring rarely seen character designs, renders and concept artwork from the studio's back catalog.

The Art of Naughty Dog will cover the studio's early days - back when it was founded as JAM (Jason and Andy Magic) Software - up to its recent work with The Last of Us and the Uncharted series. Artwork from the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter franchises will be showcased throughout, and with any luck, the team's lesser-known efforts for the Sega Genesis and 3DO will also get their dues.

Naughty Dog will host a launch event for the book later this year. A release date was not announced. [Image: Naughty Dog]

Hi! I’m Rob Karp. You may remember me from my role as producer in the multi award winning XDev Studio, where I worked on a number of Sony’s first party titles over the last few years. Today I want to tell you about my latest venture, which is coming as a time-limited exclusive to PlayStations everywhere. It’s called Backgammon Blitz!

Backgammon has been played for centuries by gamers young, old and ancient. It appears to be a simple game about getting your checkers around and off the board before your opponent, but it has immense layers of depth and strategy to it.

13787376843_cf71801a63_z.jpg

I’m just the messenger, of course. The talented folks behind this lovely little title are VooFoo Studios. Having made a name for themselves with Hustle Kings and Pure Chess, Backgammon feels like a step onwards and upwards for the studio, taking all of their strengths – gorgeous art design, a subtle but stylish approach to UI – and none of their weaknesses – cake night each Friday has always been their Achilles heel – into the next generation of platforms.

Speaking of awesome visuals, check out the beautiful screenshots in this post, taken from in the game!

Backgammon Blitz is launching this winter on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. The team are so keen to whet your appetite for the world of backgammon that they’re offering a trial version of the game that’ll teach you the rules in an instant… And if you upgrade to the full game, you’ll get seamless a-sync cross platform play that’s so quick it feels like realtime multiplayer, as well as a brand new arcade mode called Blitz! With more action and more tactics needed, can you become the Blitz Master?

BioWare is building Dragon Age: Inquisition with voice controls via Kinect on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, similar to the voice commands in Mass Effect 3, Creative Director Mike Laidlaw told Xbox The Official Magazine.

"We're expecting that Xbox 360 and Xbox One editions will ship with a Kinect-enabled voice command feature, just like Mass Effect 3 did," Laidlaw said.

BioWare is also planning to use SmartGlass in some way, Producer Cameron Lee said: "It needs to make sense, of course. But we want Inquisition to be an experience you can take with you everywhere - to work, the commute home, the living room, bed."

Laidlaw also revealed that Dragon Age: Inquisition won't feature any character DLC because it would have to be partly on-disc, and BioWare doesn't want to inspire criticism from fans.

"Because of how deeply enmeshed in the system companion characters are, we can't just add them on the fly - part of them has to be shipped on the disc," Laidlaw said. "Which has led to criticism that we're forcing people to pay for content they already own. It's not the case, but we've decided this time to not go that route. There will be no DLC party members."

Voice-controlled RTS There Came an Echo is headed to the PlayStation 4 alongside previously announced ports for Xbox One and PC, developer Iridium Studios announced this week.

In There Came an Echo, players control an armed squadron using voice commands, issuing orders to the group and to individual teammates amid hectic firefights. Players can fully customize the game's recognized commands (allowing your squadmates to respond to a Captain Picard-esque "Make it so!" during combat, as the trailer above demonstrates), and the game features DualShock 4 controller support in addition to the default microphone controls.

There Came an Echo earned more than $115,000 in backer funding when it turned to Kickstarter for support in 2013, and is due for a Steam release later this year. [Video: Iridium Studios]

Time to catch up on the latest pre-order discounts and bonuses - let's get started!

If you've been holding out for Lego The Hobbit on Wii U, a number of pre-order offers are still in place for the game's release April 22nd. Gamestop's bonus is perhaps the most notable, as your pre-order entitles you to an exclusive Good Morning Bilbo Baggins Lego mini-figure. These figures are apparently only available with a pre-order of the game, so it's definitely worth considering if you're a Lego collector, want a fine gift for a Lego fan, or are just looking for something to flip on Ebay to help offset the game's cost.

Amazon is offering a $10 store credit with Lego The Hobbit purchases & pre-orders, while Best Buy will knock ten bucks off your purchase when you buy both Lego The Hobbit and the recently released The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug movie on Blu-Ray.

If you've been considering Mario Golf: World Tour for 3DS, both Amazon and Walmart are offering the title for $29.99 with pre-order. This is a savings of five or ten dollars, depending. (There's some contradiction as to the final MSRP - Amazon and Best Buy seem to think it's $39.99, but Gamestop is holding at $34.99.)

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars releases for 3DS on April 15th, with the first printing set as a Special Edition with bonus CD soundtrack and box packaging. This edition isn't exclusive to any one retailer, but given the niche nature of the title and Best Buy having currently sold out of their initial allotment, you may want to pre-order the game sooner than later if you've been meaning to lock in a copy. It's still available via Amazon, Gamestop and Walmart.

Before I finish up, I'd like to mention a new feature I've added to the regular mega-deal list you'll find post-jump. Along with the usual game discounts for 3DS, Wii, Wii U and DS, you'll also find new pre-order comparison tables for 3DS and Wii U! I hope this'll come in handy when comparing pre-order offers amongst some of the more popular retailers - not only prices but bonuses as well. Hit the jump to check it out, and as always, thanks for reading!

Following word that the GameSpy online matchmaking service will cease to be after May 31, EA has revealed plans to move its GameSpy games to the publisher's own online service, Origin.

When asked specifically about the fate of online shooters Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the Origin Twitter account replied with, "We're working on transitioning those games after the shut down so you'll still be able to play them." Later, IGN asked EA for clarification on its plans and were told that work is not yet complete, but more information would appear shortly. "We're working on finding a transition, but still have technical hurdles to overcome," EA said. "We will make an announcement when there is news to share."

In the meantime, those hard up for a military shooter can set their sights on the more recent Battlefield 4. After six months of issues, it now works more or less as it should. [Image: EA]

While piracy is the pits, you gotta love bootleg covers: they mash up all sorts of things that either make no sense, or somehow make the source material even funnier. In some cases, they even make you wish the game advertised on the cover officially actually existed, instead of whatever pirated game is actually in there.Read more...

This summer, Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers brings the collectible card game series to Xbox One for the first time, but it looks like the game isn't coming to PlayStation platforms in the near future. Wizards of the Coast announced Magic 2015 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Steam, iPad, Android and Kindle, with PS3 and PS4 conspicuously absent from the deck; previously editions have traditionally come to PS3 at launch. As for the summer due date, that's only specified for Xbox One, and Wizards of the Coast notes its releases may vary from platform to platform.

Talking of decks, you'll be able to build customized ones in Magic 2015, and Wizards of the Coast promises "more robust" deck-building features to boot. Meanwhile, the story pits players as the prey of primal hunter and generally deadly dude Garruk Wildspeaker.

Of course, we might be seeing Magic: The Gathering on bigger screens in the future, after 20th Century Fox's purchase of the series' screen rights earlier this year. We look forward to the inevitable video game based on the collectible card game based on the movie based on the collectible card game. [Image: Wizards of the Coast]
