We have something that many of you have been looking forward to. And boy, have you been looking forward to it.

This time around, let’s see if we can get you prepared for the beta with all the important questions and answers. If you have any more questions regarding the beta, please feel free to ask in the comments! I’ll do my best to answer them.

Here you’ll find pretty much all of the questions and comments that came up during the first beta phase, with according relevant answers. You can find the following points below:

  • When does the beta start?
  • What do I need to play the beta?
  • Where can I download the beta client?
  • Can I carry my character over to the live game after the beta test?
  • Can I play my existing character?
  • Can I play my existing character (previous beta 1)?
  • Do I play on beta servers? Will I see other players?
  • Why can’t I create a character on server X?
  • I participated in beta 1, and the text was really small. Was that fixed?
  • I can’t log in with my existing account!
  • Do I need a one-time password to log in?
  • I did not get my confirmation mail!
  • How can I contact the support center (for account related problems)?
  • Can I share a live stream or screenshots from the game?
  • Can I use Mouse & Keyboard instead of, or in addition to, DualShock 4?
  • Can I play using Remote Play on PS Vita?
  • Is the game subscription-based?
  • I love it! Where can I pre-order Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn?

When does the beta start?

Beta phase 2 starts today, April 4th, and runs until Monday, April 7th.

What do I need to play the beta?

All you need is a PS4! Some of you may still have the old beta client installed – you can safely delete it to free up hard disk space. We know it’s a big download, but there have been a lot of updates, so updating the old client didn’t make much sense. The good news is: If you buy the game after playing beta 2, you won’t need to download the full game again.  A few small updates and you’ll be up and running in the full game!

Where can I download the beta client?

Just log into your account, go into PlayStation Store, and select Games -> Top Games – you will see it in the list. Alternatively, you can search for Final Fantasy XIV – the beta client will be among the results. (Remember that you can safely uninstall/delete the beta 1, if you still have the old beta client on your PS4, to free up disc space.)

Can I carry my character over to the live game?

Yes! If you decide to buy the game, you can continue playing with your character from beta 2.

Can I play with my existing character?

Yes! Simply log in on PS4 with your usual account details and link your Square Enix Account to your PlayStation Network account (unless you have already played on PS3, then you just need to accept the terms for your existing account). You will be able to play normally.

Can I play my existing character (previous beta 1)?

No – as explained before the first beta, characters that have been created during that phase had to be wiped.

Do I play on beta servers? Will I see other players?

This beta phase will take place on live servers! Which means you will be playing together with all the existing FFXIV players on PC and PS3.

Why can’t I create a character on server X?

During the beta, there will be a massive amount of new players. If too many want to start on the same server at the same time, we might have to temporarily disable character creation on that server to make sure that the game continues to be enjoyable for all players on the server. If you are determined to play on a specific server, you will have to wait for it to open up again.

I participated in the beta 1, and the text was really small. Was that fixed?

We have worked on the size of the launcher as well as the size of the in-game text. Please give it a try. And remember that you can resize and move UI elements at will (see how-to here). We will continue to optimize these settings in future updates. If you still think it’s too small, please let us know on the official beta forums!

I can’t log in with my existing account!

We know the service names are quite similar, and many of you already have a Square Enix membership, where you link your existing games. FFXIV, however, needs a separate Square Enix Account. So please do not try to log in with your Square Enix membership, as it won’t work. Please note: Our account system is also case sensitive!

We know the text entry tool sometimes likes to disfigure things like email addresses (for instance .Com instead of .com). Please make sure to mind capitals in your username and email address when creating an account. If you still can’t log in, please contact our customer support here (North America).

Do I need a one-time password to log in?

A one-time password is generated by a free smartphone app or a small keychain fob. Only users that have previously added this as an extended security measure will need to enter it.

If you buy the Collector’s Edition, you will get a keychain fob in it. Otherwise, just download the smartphone app for free. Everyone that has registered a one-time password device to his account will be able to select a free teleport location in-game. More info here.

13628999635_ccf2619817_z.jpg

I did not get my confirmation mail!

Please let us know in the comments if you do not get your confirmation mail, and make sure to mention which email provider you use (Gmail, GMX, Yahoo, etc.) and if your email address contains any special characters (like underscores, hyphens, commas, dots, etc., or country/language-specific characters). Please do not post your full email address or any identifying information!

Also, please make sure to check your spam folders and add *@account.square-enix.com to any whitelist you may have, if you are familiar with that process.

How can I contact the support center (for account related problems)?

Just check out our convenient chat support tool (North America). Please try to have all relevant information ready before you start the chat though, to keep waiting times short – the beta weekend will probably be very busy. Thank you!

Can I share a live stream or screenshots from the game?

Yes! By all means, go ahead.

Can I use Mouse & Keyboard instead of, or in addition to, DualShock 4?

Yes! You can play the game however you want.

Can I play using Remote Play on PS Vita?

Yes! Someone wants to watch a football game on the TV? Just grab your Vita and continue to level your character remotely.

Is the game subscription-based?

Yes. You get 30 free days of game time when you buy a retail version. You can learn everything about what you get with your subscription in this article, here on PlayStation.Blog!

I love it! Where can I pre-order the game?

Just follow this link.

And that’s it! If you have any other questions, feel free to put them into the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Hello, PlayStation.Blog readers! This is Walid, producer at Spiders Studio. I’m very proud to tell you about Spiders’ latest game, and our first RPG for PS4, Bound by Flame. We plan to launch on May 9th for PS3 and PS4.

Today, we decided we’d focus a little more on the game’s combat and show off some PS4 footage for the first time.

This video is brand new and 100% pure gameplay — nothing pre-rendered — and should give you a little taste of the combat before we debut an epic combat trailer that covers all the combat mechanics and fighting styles. You’ll catch a glimpse of all the possibilities Bound by Flame offers in combat: Stealth, crossbow, fireballs, and a two-handed axe and hammer.

In Bound by Flame, the combat system lets you instantly switch between three stances (Fighter, Ranger, and Pyromancer), allowing you to adapt to the enemy you’re facing on the fly. We also showcase some of the creatures you’ll be fighting. There’s a lot of them out there, and each has its own characteristics and tendencies in combat.

The array of weapons in Bound by Flame offers a large number of possibilities. Will you smash your foes with a hammer, slice and dice with an axe or sword, or go sneaky with double daggers and long-range weapons? Or will you unleash the power of the demon and become a fearless pyromancer?

And if you want more info about the game, don’t hesitate to visit the official website or the official Facebook Page.

I’ll stop by sometime to answer comments, so if you have any questions, just ask!

Hello there! This is Alexey Menshikov from Beatshapers, and we’re proudly announcing Z-Run for PS Vita, coming to PlayStation Store this May. We moved back the launch date since last summer’s announcement in order to make our game bigger and better. Our previous games on PS Vita include StarDrone Extreme, BreakQuest, Furmins, and dozens of PSP minis — along with the recently announced PS4 title, Ready to Run.

Today, we’re presenting a gameplay tutorial trailer with the awesome song “You Better Run,” made especially for the game by The Spin Wires band.

The world has been overrun by flesh-hungry zombies, and you’re stranded in the middle of a post-apocalyptic city with no way out. Are you going to just stand there and get eaten, and turn into a brainless creature, too? Not likely.

In Z-Run, you never stand still. Anyone who does winds up dead. Stay on your toes if you want to stay alive. The city is a mess after the zombie apocalypse struck, so you need to be agile as well as fast while you attempt to sprint through the crowds of undead assailants. Falling over an obstacle or running head-long into abandoned cars is a sure way to get caught by the legions of zombies.

13584999995_6b66d6c69c_n.jpg13585047553_d8f8b310db_n.jpg

But you’re not expected to go in empty handed. An arsenal of weapons is available for collecting, including guns, bats, planks, wrenches, and even an electric guitar that will help you fend off the flesh eaters and keep on running.

Be careful how much you exert yourself, though. This is a big city, and it’s packed with hungry zombies. Every move you make, punch you throw, or guitar you swing will cost you energy. Find yourself exhausted too quickly, and you’ll be an easy meal for an army of undead attackers.

There are multiple routes you can take as you sprint through the city, and exploration is an essential part of survival during the undead armageddon. Campaign mode tasks you with working your way through the debris-strewn streets in an effort to find your way out with at least a few limbs still intact. There’s also a survival mode included, which keeps on going until the living dead finally get to feast. The more you unlock in the story, the more you get to test your skills in survival mode.

As your character increases in level, you can begin to add to your stamina, allowing you to attack and dodge more, as well as recover more quickly. You can also begin to upgrade your weapons, ammunition, and inventory to help you keep on running for longer.

Z-Run is coming in early May of this year to PS Vita.

It’s time to reveal a secret about our upcoming horror game, SOMA. Before reading any further, take a look at this trailer:

That’s right, our next game will be set deep below the water’s surface – at the bottom of the sea. It was a decision which came very swiftly; Jens (co-founder of Frictional Games) and I sort of decided it on whim during a meet-up. But it’s something that had been brewing inside us for a long time. Most of our earth is covered in ocean, and yet it’s something that we know very little about. It is an incredibly hostile environment filled with strange creatures, and it is right on our door step.

Most of the ocean is devoid of sunlight and inhospitable to us. The differences in pressure between the surface and even a modest depth of 100 meters is enough to turn a human into mush. That pressure, that depth, is nothing compared to the true ocean deeps. And as if this isn’t enough, the creatures living there seem like they’re from another world. Gigantic squid, luminescent fish and creatures that are all mouths and teeth are only the start. If you dive down any distance you enter into a realm of monsters.

13592261573_f043a6c0af_z.jpg

13592261583_f043a6c0af_n.jpg13592262033_aeca0ba21b_n.jpg

The ocean is an alien world, and we’ve only scratched the surface. We feel it’s the perfect place to explore in a horror game.

When SOMA is released on PS4 in 2015, we invite you to take a deep breath and follow us down into the darkness.

13570592823_0e87c76790_z.jpg

(This post is about Road Not Taken, Spry Fox’s upcoming roguelike for PS4 & PS Vita. If this is your first time hearing about RNT, check out our trailers here!)

Lately, we’ve been doing a ton of playtesting of Road Not Taken, particularly with fellow game developers. (If you’re ever looking for brutally honest feedback, other game developers are a good place to start.) In general, the feedback has been pretty positive: people love the game’s basic mechanics, art and audio. But one big issue repeatedly crept up in many of our playtests: people weren’t sensing the depth of the game and weren’t feeling a strong sense of progression. This post is all about how we’ve been fixing that.

I like to think of Road Not Taken as an iceberg floating in the ocean: a tiny percentage of the total game is visible above the surface when you first start playing, while the vast majority of the game lies unseen, waiting to be discovered. A large part of that depth comes from all the unusual creatures and objects you can encounter as you explore the enchanted forests of the game. Another large part comes from all the secret tools and boosts you can create if you know what you’re doing. (For example, if you combine the right number of red and white spirits lurking in the forest, you can create a useful magic axe.)

In our previous playtest builds, none of this was surfaced to the player. Since Road Not Taken is a roguelike, we simply expected players to assume that they would encounter different and/or more challenging objects and creatures as they progressed. And we expected players to stumble upon a few of the simpler crafting recipes in the game, and consequently realize that there must be many more recipes just waiting to be discovered. But neither of those things happened, so we realized we needed to do a better job of communicating with the player.

13570536005_22d3608fdb_z.jpg

We’ve taken several steps to address these issues. First and foremost, we’re adding a “book of secrets” to the game, and we’re introducing it to the player during the very first mission. This book is basically a giant progress meter, in addition to being a very helpful reference guide. When you start out, it contains just a few entries, two of which are simple-but-useful crafting recipes. This unambiguously signals that crafting is something you can and should do. More importantly, the book tells you how many new objects and secrets you have yet to uncover (i.e. “2 out of 100 secrets found.”) This is an unmistakable signal to the player: you’re just getting started! Get to exploring!

There are already dozens of secret crafting recipes in Road Not Taken, in addition to dozens of forest objects and critters, and we hope to add more over time. The book of secrets is, in retrospect, an obvious way to make it all comprehensible to the player.

This sort of problem is common in game development. You build a robust system, expecting everyone to love it at first sight, and then grapple with the brutal reality that people either don’t understand the system and/or don’t understand its depth. Your tutorial might need work. (We’ve gone through at least a dozen iterations of the Road Not Taken tutorial and probably have a couple more left to go before it’s good enough!) Your metagame might be poorly surfaced. Your UI might be confusing. The list goes on and on. There’s only one cure to these illnesses, and that’s lots of playtesting, iteration and polish.

rnt_blog_playerprog_grave.gif

There are a bunch of other things we’re doing to give new players a clearer sense of progression. For example, one interesting thing about Road Not Taken is that your character has a maximum lifespan of 15 years, and each mission you embark upon consumes a year of your life. (This ties into one of the main themes of the game: trying to live the best possible life in the limited time you have on this Earth.) In earlier builds, we never actually informed players of their lifespan limit until they died after 15 missions. This caused new players to feel like the game was somewhat aimless at first, and later upset them when they unexpectedly kicked the bucket! So now we signal your limited lifespan in a bunch of ways. After each mission, we explicitly tell you: “X years remaining.” (14… 13… 12… etc) And NPCs comment about the passing of time. There’s a rather foreboding doctor in town who likes to make not-very-funny jokes about your dwindling lifespan. It’s hard not to get the message.

rnt_blog_playerprog_doc.gif

13570592673_4b6c25f46b_n.jpg

You can, of course, die before you reach your limited lifespan. This game is a roguelike, after all! We’ve found ourselves tuning the difficulty up over time as we realize that encountering a steep challenge is half of what folks like about a good roguelike (the other half is a deep sense of discovery, which this game has in spades, and which we’ve accentuated with the book of secrets that I mentioned earlier.) High difficulty and death in Road Not Taken are, in their own ways, a signal to players that this game is not going to hold your hand. You need to play carefully, and you need to learn the game’s secrets if you want to survive.

Okay, that’s all I’ve got for you today! As always, we really hope you’re enjoying these little insights into the development of Road Not Taken. If you have any questions about this post (or anything about the game in general) just leave me a comment! I’ll do my best to give you a decent answer. :-)

PS: If you’re planning to attend PAX East, we’d love to meet you! We’ll be there showing off Road Not Taken (with a playable demo!) and we’ll be giving away a beautiful free poster (see below) to everyone who plays the demo and signs up for our newsletter! Please come by, say hello, and take a free poster home with you. :-)

We are very excited to announce that we will be releasing PlayStation Vita Pets exclusively for PS Vita. PlayStation Vita Pets is no ordinary pet game! The team at Spiral House set out to make something that was more than just a pet sim – we wanted to make something that felt like a real game, with characters, fun and adventure, so that’s exactly what we did.

In the game you pick from four different puppies, each with their own personality, sense of humor and character traits. Once you’ve gotten to know each other and learned the skills needed to venture outside the safety of your home you’ll be able to embark (no pun intended) on the adventure of Castlewood Island and uncover the long lost legend of a king and his dog.

That’s right; outside of the home where you dress, play with, bathe and train your dog is a whole island of adventure to explore and puzzles to solve. Together you’ll be able to explore a massive forest, venture into multiple locations like spooky old mines and graveyards to ultimately make your way to the legendary castle in the center of the island, where the king’s greatest treasures are hidden…

13569806323_3f72d47bbf_n.jpg13570115484_44385947a9_n.jpg

None of this is possible without your pet pal though, through nurturing, training and playing together your dog will gain the skills you both need to be able to progress deeper into the world, crawling, pulling, digging, jumping and more will all come into play if you want to be able to uncover all the secrets of Castlewood Island.

We’ll share more details in the coming weeks. PlayStation Vita Pets will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store on June 3rd, just in time for summer. :)

Baseball fans eager to get their hands on Sony's MLB 14: The Show prior to its PlayStation 4 debut can start their seasons early thanks to a GameStop trade-up program that allows early adopters to exchange a used PlayStation 3 version of the game for a PS4 edition at launch.

Starting next month, PowerUp Rewards members can bring a used PlayStation 3 copy of MLB 14: The Show to any GameStop retail location and trade it for the game's PlayStation 4 edition for just $19.99. GameStop further sweetens the deal with a pre-order incentive, giving PS4 players $20 worth of in-game "stubs" currency.

MLB 14: The Show is out now for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The PlayStation 4 edition launches May 6.
