#freakyfanart One of the most iconic figures in modern role-playing, Final Fantasy's Cloud Strife cuts a very distinctive figure, largely due to a combination of spiky blond hair and his ridiculously huge Buster sword. These features set him apart. They also make him ridiculously easy to twist into whatever form the fan artist so desires. More »

#column Over the years, I've asked many gamers about their favorite game soundtracks, and more often than not they respond by listing titles from the 80's or 90's. The Legend of Zelda, The Secret of Monkey Island 2, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; or maybe Mega Man 2, Final Fantasy VI, Sonic The Hedgehog, or Earthbound. More »

Over the next two months we’ve got some pretty darned cool LittleBigPlanet 2 DLC packs heading your way. I’m sure you’ve noticed the title of this post, so let’s not delay any further – from the depths of Midgar, I’m delighted to unveil…the FINAL FANTASY VII costume pack!

5891971928_a21a11e2e0_z.jpg

Coming to the PlayStation Store on July 13th, these costumes will let you re-live the struggle of Cloud, Aeris, and the rest of AVALANCHE against Shinra, from one of the most iconic and critically acclaimed video games of all time.

Exciting stuff – but that’s not all. I’m sure lots of you have been enjoying the continuing adventures of Cole McGrath in inFAMOUS 2. Those adventures can now continue even further thanks to the inFAMOUS 2 mini-pack. Released this week for $2.99, it contains costumes for Good Cole and Bad Cole, as well as a whole host of new stickers. Being a hero is optional in inFAMOUS 2, so this will give you a chance to show your true colors!

On July 20th, the Killzone 3 mini-pack will be released containing Rico and Hazmat Trooper costumes, and new stickers – I’ve raved about the coolness of the Hazmat Trooper costume in the past, so now you’ll be able to enjoy it for yourself. Just like the inFAMOUS 2 mini-pack, it’ll be priced at $2.99.

The next release to keep an eye out for is the Toy Story packs, which were just recently unveiled at E3. With THREE new costume packs containing all of your favorite characters, plus a level pack containing new Toy Story-themed levels to play through. These packs are sure to keep you entertained until the release of the LBP2 PlayStation Move pack. Stay tuned for more details (and pics!) soon.

Lastly, we’d like to let everyone know that MotorStorm Apocalypse content will be coming very soon. We have a pretty packed LBP2 DLC schedule with lots of exciting stuff coming up, but you will not have to wait much longer, I promise. Our apologies for any inconvenience!

Well, that’s it for now, folks – enjoy the downloadable goodness!

Oh, just one more thing…

Bom-bom bom-bom…SEPHIROTH!

Don’t worry, he hasn’t been forgotten. The awesome Sephiroth costume will also be released on July 13th. I won’t tease you all anymore – here’s the full range of FINAL FANTASY VII content that is coming your way…

$1.99 each

  • Cloud costume
  • Aeris costume
  • Tifa costume

$5.99

#squareenix Creative types like game directors saying they'd love to do a remake of Final Fantasy VII, that's one thing. But now the CEO himself says the company will, at least, "explore the possibility" of doing so. More »

So far, Square Enix has said that a Final Fantasy VII remake would be "unrealistic," "tough to do in HD" and "not happening." But hold out hope, die-hards, because during an interview at FFXIII's launch party, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada finally admitted that the company is "going to explore the possibility" of revisiting the classic RPG. He didn't completely reverse the long-held position, as he says Square Enix has to decide "whether or not we're going to do it, if we're going to do it, and the platform," but he did finally admit that there have been a lot of fan requests to see the game in a new form, so he's giving it some solid thought.

Of course, the huge success of the game's re-release on PSN probably didn't hurt either. If Square's convinced a remake will sell (and people will play through Gaia yet again, possibly even on yet another platform), we'll probably see it somewhere sooner or later.

Since Square Enix isn't terribly keen on remaking Final Fantasy VII, it's up to fans to get the job done. Like this guy, from Thailand, who's made a showreel depicting the dream project. Sure, it...

One of gaming's favorite pastimes: "What if" scenarios involving Final Fantasy VII. What if they actually made a next-gen version that looked like Advent Children? What if Square hadn't defected to the PlayStation? What if Aeris didn't have to die and instead was real and we were in love and got married?

Of course, only slightly less popular is the "What if Final Fantasy VII came out ten years earlier and was 8-bit" scenario. We're pretty sure someone already did the actual work of porting the game over to the Famicom (thanks, Shenzhen Nanjing Technology Co, Ltd!) but in case you missed that, take a gander at Martin Barreby's non-interactive reimagining after the break. Sure, some of the art looks like it's cut from a fanfic and the gameplay actually looks worse than 1987's Final Fantasy 1, but it's "just a small project with not that much effort put into it" says Barreby, so lay off.

Next: What if Cloud's sword and hair were subject to the same laws of gravity that we are?

We love Nobuo Uematsu's work on the musical accompaniment for the Final Fantasy franchise, but we often find ourselves wishing those games' scores were infused with a touch of Jay-Z. Maybe a light smattering of Outkast. The faintest hint of Ghostface Killah. The mixologists from Team Teamwork (creators of the similarly-spliced Ocarina of Rhyme album) have once again worked their magic on a classic video game soundtrack. This time around, it's the score from Final Fantasy VII, which has been mashed together with tracks from over a dozen hip-hop artists, as well as Tom Waits, which is just weird. You can pay whatever you want to download the cleverly-titled Vinyl Fantasy 7 -- though we're betting you'll probably settle on zero dollars. [Thanks, Mike!]
