Minecraft PS3 boxes clever with a disc version in May

Mojang is releasing Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition onto store shelves on May 16 in North America and May 14 in PAL regions, which is no surprise given how the Xbox 360 discs continue to strike gold. Check out the PS3 Edition box art by digging below the break.

The PS3 port sold one million copies within its first month of availability, adding to the 12 million sales on Xbox 360, 14 million on PC, and 21 million of the Pocket Edition. But why stop at gajibillions when you can try to take over the world?

To that effect, UK porters 4J Studios have PS4, Xbox One, and Vita versions in the works, although there remains no word on when to expect them. [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment]

Minecraft Pocket Edition chips off 21 million copies

Minecraft Pocket Edition has sold more than 21 million copies, developer Jens Bergensten says in a tweet. To celebrate this ridiculously large number, the Minecraft mobile team will host a live panel broadcast from Mojang offices on Monday, April 14, allowing fans to ask them anything. Whether they'll answer anything is up to them.

Players can submit questions to this reddit thread. Mojang will pick the best ones and address them live online - there's no specific time for the stream yet, but it will be archived. Mojang says to check the site for more info as it comes in.

"We're extremely grateful to all players for your dedication and creativity," Mojang writes. "Without that, Minecraft wouldn't be anywhere near as significant as it is today."

Minecraft recently passed 12 million sales on Xbox 360 and 14 million on PC. In its first month on PS3, Minecraft hit 1 million sales. In total, Minecraft has sold roughly 576 squidillion copies across all platforms. [Image: Mojang]

I like modern houses in Minecraft. They give a good contrast to the fantasy setting, and motivate me to build something more complex than the tried and true crappy cubical wooden plank hut. The simple yet pleasant home above, by redditor KiltedCobra, is a prime example. Check out the Imgur album for more screenshots.Read more...

Hi everyone. The latest update to Minecraft PS3 brings Emeralds, Ender Chests, Zombie Villagers, and more. Cauldrons fill up in the rain! Wolf collars can be dyed! Pigs drop more porkchops! The list goes on.

Two skin packs are also available. Skin Pack 1 is perfect for hardcore PlayStation fans. It brings a bunch of Sony stalwarts including Nathan “Uncharted” Drake, folks from Heavy Rain, some Killzone dudes, and Sly Cooper. The Battle and Beasts skin pack includes koalas, a Cleopatra look-a-like, various cavemen, and an octopus. It’s the most eclectic pack currently available.

For those of you who aren’t content with the classic Minecraft styling, two new texture packs are also launching. The City Texture pack is perfect for the modernist Minecrafter; it’ll give your creations a more clean, clinical look. The Plastic Texture pack makes things look a lot more, erm, plasticy.

That’s it for now. Have fun!

Minecraft user creates giant tortoise with steampunk city on its back

Atropos is the name of the eldest of the Three Fates in Greek mythology; the sister who used shears to cut the thread of a mortal's life. It is also the name of Minecraft user CARLOOOO's giant clockwork tortoise that has a steampunk city sprouting out of its back.

We're not a fashion or celebrity gossip website so we won't get into a "who wore it better" argument over the name, but if we were to do such a thing, we think you know who we'd pick. (Hint: It's the giant clockwork tortoise with a steampunk city on its back.) Just sayin'.

The whole project took five months to complete, and went through several designs - including a whale version - before settling on the one you can now download. If you want to take a tour before committing to such a large investment of real estate, check out the video above. [Image: CARLOOOO]

The console versions of Mojang's Minecraft will be updated this week with new items, features, and fixes, adding a significant chunk of content to player-curated sandbox worlds.

Minecraft title update 14 introduces emerald currency and villager trading, along with anvils that can be used to repair equipment. The patch also adds new edibles like potatoes and carrots, and clever players can now make the "carrot-on-a-stick" item to control pigs while riding them.

Title update 14 is available now for the Xbox Live Arcade version of Minecraft. A PlayStation 3 patch is due tomorrow.

Looks like All of Humanity wasn’t the only one surprised by Facebook’s $2 billion purchase of Oculus Rift. Minecraft creator Markus Persson was equally taken aback, and not in a good way. His solution? Cancel plans for an Oculus-Rift-specific version of Minecraft on the spot. He first made the announcement on Twitter, only explaining that he finds Facebook “creepy.” Now, though, he’s elaborated a fair bit.

'Facebook creeps me out,' Notch ends Minecraft for Oculus Rift

Those eager to cobble together monumental structures in virtual reality will be sad to hear that Minecraft is no longer likely to be developed for the Oculus Rift officially.

In August we reported on a series of tweets from Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson in which the developer stated that he was "VERY excited" by the potential of the Oculus Rift headset. Now that Facebook has acquired Oculus Rift, Persson is singing a different, decidedly unhappy tune. "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus," Persson tweeted. "I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."

We've reached out to Persson for more information on why exactly the social networking giant creeps him out. In the meantime, those especially hard up for some blocky virtual world building may want to take a look at Minecrift, a Minecraft modification that adds Oculus Rift support to the existing version of Mojang's indie hit.

Update: In lieu of responding directly to press inquiries, Persson has posted a lengthy explanation of his issues with Facebook which we've quoted in part below.

Minecraft developer continues rise in profit, made $128 million in 2013

Mojang, development studio behind the wildly-successful Minecraft, has continued its five-year trend of increased profitability. Mojang revenue topped $237 million in 2012, while a Wall Street Journal article reports that number to have hit $326 million for 2013, which in turn translates to almost $128 million in profit.

Roughly 93 percent of the company's money was made from Minecraft, split fairly even across platforms: 38 percent from the PC version, 30 percent from console versions and 25 percent from mobile versions.

Minecraft creator Marcus "Notch" Persson, who still owns the rights to the Minecraft IP, was the single-largest expense for Mojang; the company paid out approximately $129 million in license fees to Persson last year. [Image: Mojang]
