If you're planning to buy either Halo: Reach or Super Mario Galaxy 2 -- and it seems statistically likely that you'll want at least one of those -- then Walmart has a deal you may consider interesting. Right now, you can pre-order Halo or Galaxy and receive $20 in credit from the retailer. And, of course, since it's Walmart, the prices end in .96, saving you an additional three cents.

We don't even know when Halo: Reach will be released beyond "fall," but we already have a pretty good idea of what the best deal for it will be. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available May 23.

A portion of a translated interview concerning The Legend of Zelda Manga… Aonuma: Normally, 3D offers many more possibilities. But should that mean we always prefer the 3D over 2D? I do not think like that, quite the opposite. The 2D possesses qualities and a charm that is not found necessarily in 3D. Both styles have [...]

There aren't many who stand tall and, against all odds, crusade for truth and righteousness in video gaming. That job is best left in the capable hands of Indie Man, the latest concoction of super-squad Mega64. In an attempt to help struggling indie developers battle against the bigger, well-financed studios, he intervenes when it seems all hope is lost and sabotages the big studios in the name of indie justice. It's darkest just before dawn, and all of that.

And, in the spirit of his unending generosity, the Joystiq staff has compiled its own list of scenarios where Indie Man's unique skillset could help benefit the smaller fish in the industry pond. Check 'em out right after the video past the break.

This whole iPhone as a gaming platform thing might just be catching on. According to a report by mobile analytics firm Flurry, revenue from games sold for Apple's touch-based devices grew from $115 million in 2008 to an estimated $500 million last year in the US. Impressive indeed -- but even more so is Flurry's research showing that iPhone / iPod touch games now account for at least 19 percent of total US handheld software revenue, up from 5 percent in 2009.

Flurry's findings show that most of that share has been taken away from Sony's PSP, which accounted for 11 percent of 2009's handheld software revenue, down from 20 percent the year before. Money taken in from Nintendo DS game sales, on the other hand(held), only decreased five percent since 2008, with Flurry pegging it at 70 percent of the market in '09.

The firm sees Apple continuing to put the hurt on PSP software revenue, pointing out that while downloadable iPhone and iPod touch games are selling "in droves," Sony's introduction of the PSP Go and an increased focus on digital game distribution didn't help the platform hold any ground.

DJ Hero turntable controllers are now available in standalone versions to scratch on all major consoles... wait, that sounds wrong. The peripheral is currently listed on retailer Amazon for $60, which is $20 off the Wii game bundle, and $40 off the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The second peripheral can be used for several different modes the game supports.

The first 100,000 standalone units also include a Shepard Fairey poster (pictured), featuring the game's cast of DJs. If you're a hardcore fan of the turntable series, chances are you've already picked up a second controller by now and traded the extra copy into Gamestop. For the rest of us, with DJ Hero 2 somewhere out there, we'd be more apt to wait and see if there's an updated controller with the sequel.

With the new 250GB 360 hard drive moving into the price territory once occupied by the 120GB drive, it should come as no surprise that the old model is getting a price cut. In fact, we're a little surprised it's not getting more of one. Microsoft just told us that the price on the 120GB HDD has been cut to $99.99, effective immediately. Microsoft tells us the drive is available at that price "while supplies last," so it sounds like they may not be on the market all that much longer.

In case you're bad at math, that's $0.83 per gigglebyte on the old model and $0.52 for the new. In case you're bad at Newegg searches, those are both still bad prices.

During GDC, I saw Ragnar Tornquist demonstrate his upcoming Funcom MMO, The Secret World. I should note that I'm not well versed in MMOs, and my experience doesn't extend far beyond a scant few hours with the trial version of World of Warcraft (and many, many hours with Phantasy Star Online and Diablo II, if you count those). As such, I had my doubts about being the best candidate to catch an early glimpse of Funcom's latest project.

After seeing the game in action and learning more about its direction, however, I started to think otherwise. As someone who typically avoids MMOs, it's interesting to see one that abandons the traditional fantasy and sci-fi trappings of the genre. As a gamer accustomed to lavish, story-driven console games, it's wonderful to see an MMO focusing on narrative (with fully voiced cutscenes, no less). No leveling, no specific character classes -- no Orcs? In short, what really struck me about The Secret World is how different it is.
