The following comes from Producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto...

“Looking back at it now, it was immediately after we finished developing Rune Factory 4, when I felt that I wanted to make something new, and those around me also voiced the same opinions. And that’s how the new challenge of Forbidden Magna came to be.

“Rather than going out on a journey, the stage is set in a place you’ll be returning to afterwards, as you befriend Spirits, and they’ll be living together with you as employees at the inn.

“We had some unexpected events occur in the midst of development, and while we did face some hardships, I’d like to thank the staff who gathered together for this challenge, from the bottom of my heart. As far you fans, I we’ll do our best to continue sharing the latest on the game. Thank you for your continued support.”

In a post on the Irrational Games website titled “A Message From Ken Levine”, the BioShock creator announced that he’s “winding down” Irrational Games. What does that mean? All but a core team of fifteen developers are being laid off, so that the remaining few can focus on new ideas, “a long period of design”, and the idea of “replayable narrative”.

This is a surprise. … [visit site to read more]

Hello.

It feels as though I can finally revive this [blog]. [cries]

The past few years, we’ve caused all of you fans to worry greatly. The Atlus group (company) that was always there, was lost, just like that, and for the sake of continuing as a brand, it’s almost as though we had no other choice [but to rely] on our products’ uniqueness that brings joy. It’s how we’ve faced the past few years.

This may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I believe that a product should have characteristics similar to what a person should have—something that can provide a feeling of stimulation or impact to someone, and perhaps even a ‘charm’ that could change one’s own sense of values.

Without simply stopping at what’s just fun, the desire for making those who get the experience to play it, retain something in their hearts… those are the thoughts and feelings that are important to us, as we’ve continued pursuing creativity.

That will not be changing.

We’ll keep working hard to be able to continue making games that will bring you joy, and nothing would make me happier than hearing your warm voices of encouragement.

It’s been an evergreen year for Nintendo, as we’ve devoted ourselves to celebrating Mario’s younger brother during The Year of Luigi! Always the hesitant hero, often unappreciated, Luigi is usually found in his superstar brother’s shadow. After first appearing in Mario Bros. more than three decades ago, the lanky green one is now over 30 years old – so we’ve been celebrating with a year-long birthday bash!

Over the course of The Year of Luigi, numerous new games featuring the birthday boy have been released on Nintendo 3DS family systems and Wii U, alongside some Club Nintendo goodies. He even received his own dedicated The Year of Luigi hub and made special appearances in other channels, from Nintendo Direct to Miiverse. Today on Miiverse, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that The Year of Luigi will officially end on March 18th, so let’s relive the highlights of The Year of Luigi in our round-up!

BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games is shutting down, according to a post on the company's official website this morning.

Though the current Irrational team is still putting the finishing touches on BioShock Infinite's last piece of DLC--the second episode in the Burial At Sea storyline--that content will apparently be the last thing the team produces in its current incarnation. In the posting on the company site, studio head and creative director Ken Levine explained the reasoning behind the studio's eventual closure.

Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I’ve ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we’ve done before. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.

I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition.

Levine goes on to explain that his new team's goal will be to "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable," and "foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible" by focusing exclusively on digitally delivered content.

Irrational Games was founded in 1997 by Levine, alongside Jonathan Chey, and Robert Fermier, all of whom worked together previously at System Shock developer Looking Glass Studios. Over the course of its 17-year history, the studio produced seven titles, including System Shock 2, Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, and SWAT 4. Of course, its biggest hits were its two games in the BioShock franchise, which garnered the studio both critical acclaim and strong sales. According to Levine, the BioShock franchise will now be in the hands of publisher 2K Games, as his new, smaller team begins work on whatever it has planned next.

There is no word yet on exactly how many people will be laid off as a result of the developer's dissolution. As of 2012, Levine had cited the studio as having around 200 employees, though that may have changed in the time since.

We'll bring you more on this developing story as it becomes available.

Both Starwhal: Just the Tip and Windborne recently landed on Steam's Early Access service yesterday. Windborne, a sandbox adventure game from Counter Stike: GO and Defense Grid 2 developer Hidden Path Entertainment, is 20 percent off ($23.99) on the service until February 24.

Starwhal, the narwhal fencing game set in outer space, earned $24,450 CAD ($22,294 USD) on Kickstarter in late December. The game comes from indie developer Breakfall, who will bring the game to PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U and PS4. Breakfall is hoping to carry Starwhal over to Ouya and Xbox One as well. As for Hidden Path, the developer is also partnering with Harmonix to create the recently-revealed Chroma, a free-to-play rhythmic FPS. [Image: Hidden Path Entertainment]

So who’s up for some football (I mean soccer… whatever) PINBALL competition? Well even if you’re not into football, there is an awesome new pinball table to play, and depending on your club affinity (or lack thereof), you should definitely get involved in this. Super League Football is releasing today for Zen Pinball 2 on PlayStation Store for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita!

If you’re a fan of Arsenal, Liverpool FC, Barcelona, Real Madrid C.F., A.C. Milan, Juventus Football Club or A.S. Roma, then the choice is simple — you better support your team! For the rest of you who don’t have a club to cheer for, we invite you to join Zen Studios F.C. This team of game devs is ready to take it to the pinball playfield against these ‘other guys.’

12367866035_7e317af7e3_z.jpg

Who are those guys? THOSE ARE ZEN STUDIOS DEVS! But let’s get serious – what do you get for your hard-earned $2.99? When you download Super League Football you will get to pick a single team. Please note: YOU DO NOT GET ALL TEAMS. That’s right, you have to pick one! We can’t have you cheering for everyone! That’d be blasphemous, right? Once you pick a club, you can start playing in league play, win all sorts of Trophies, and help out your team on the global leaderboards.

A few words on Cross Buy: If you buy this on PS3 or Vita, you are Cross Buy entitled, and you can also import to PS4 (in case you do not yet have a PS4). If you buy this on PS4, you will not get any Cross Buy entitlements (I know this sounds unfair but it’s just the way it is for now). If you have questions, please leave a comment and I will be happy to clarify.

12367865785_14f889efdc_z.jpg

I know many of you are wondering if there will be more teams added. We are working on it – since the announcement there have been other clubs knocking on the door to get involved. It’s great that there is interest! Let’s see how this little experiment goes and we’ll decide where we go from here. Feel free to let us know if your team isn’t on the roster!

If you want to see the table in action, be sure to check out the table trailer on the PlayStation YouTube Channel.

I’ll be representing Zen Studios F.C. and I hope the rest of you are ready to bring your game, so… Game ON! Or, whatever those sporty types like to yell at each other. COME AT ME, BRO.
