You should probably understand right away that Thief is not an action game. You're not going to go in with swords a-blazin', hundreds of flasks of explosive liquid, and psychic powers, taking on an entire army at once. In fact, Thief actively encourages you not to fight, and in the game's challenge modes it detracts points for engaging in tussles. This is Thief, a tactical game that can actually get really tough compliments of its customizable difficulty system. Like, really, really tough.

Outlast receives its first DLC in April both on Windows PC and PS4, obliterating any hope that you'd escaped the Mount Massive Asylum for good. The first-person survival horror features reporter Miles Upshur investigating the creepy hospital, and the "Whistleblower" DLC details the events that led him to the asylum's foreboding gates.

Whistleblower stars Waylon Park, a software engineer working for the Murkoff Corporation, which owns and runs Mount Massive. After spending two weeks at the asylum, Park felt he had to email Upshur and other journalists to spill the beans on the secret horrors of the asylum - probably not the best idea from a self-preservation point-of-view, but there we are. Whistleblower doesn't just chronicle these events, though, with developer Red Barrels noting "it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story."

The above image is from the main game rather than the DLC, but we'll let you decide for yourself if you want to see the gruesome screenshot Red Barrels published alongside this week's news. Really, who drinks soda just before dinner? Revolting. [Image: Red Barrels]

Well, this is a start, I suppose. A slow, lurching start akin to that of a belligerent old truck running on stagnant fuel and wildly outdated business practices, but it’s still something. The long and short of it? Notorious Banner Saga pursuer King doesn’t want to own the word “candy” anymore. In the US. In EU territories? Well, that’s a different story. And it hasn’t announced any sort of cease-fire in its war against those who dare wield the word “saga” to describe their games that apply the actual dictionary definition of “saga.” Meanwhile, the trademark it’s sticking with – “Candy Crusher” – is mired in further controversy. The Candy Saga, in other words, isn’t over just yet.

Vessel will be coming to console exclusively for PS3 on March 11th!

To celebrate this launch, we’ve created a limited edition of Vessel Turbines, a desk toy that gives you your very own “Fluro” in a bottle. Each bottle contains a large blob of Ferrofluid, a magnetic liquid that comes to life when you apply a magnet — just like the creatures of Vessel. You can buy it on our website and get a key for Vessel on PS3.

In the game Vessel, you take the role of inventor Arkwright who has created living machines made out of liquid (called “Fluros”) that are wreaking havoc around the world. You set out to solve the Fluro problem and unravel the mystery of what they’re becoming.

Vessel takes a unique approach in gaming by creating all the creatures out of liquid. Their bodies are composed of thousands of physically simulated fluid particles. This means that they’re capable of things that few other creatures in a video game are, like melting, reforming into new shapes, flowing through barriers, regrowing lost limbs, chemically combining multiple fluid types, and much more.

All the puzzles in Vessel are based on interactions with this living liquid. Exploring and understanding how to bring liquid to life will lead to success. You have the ability to create and destroy these creatures, and the story revolves around their inventor as he sees them evolve and become lifeforms of their own.

12756578484_71977a4364_n.jpg12756275223_17c907f82f_n.jpg

We’ve spent a lot of time optimizing the game to run the liquid simulation fluidly (pun intended) on PS3, and we’re really happy with the results. We’ve made full use of the PS3 hardware, using the distributed power of the SPUs and internal hardware to process huge amounts of liquid (both living and non-living) per frame.

We’ve partnered with electronica artist Jon Hopkins (composer of the Monsters soundtrack, and renowned for his work with Brian Eno, Imogen Heap, and Coldplay), and we’ve integrated his tracks deep into the gameplay. As you begin to unlock a puzzle, the pieces of the soundtrack will unfold and layer on top of each other, really giving the feeling of bringing the world back to life. Jon’s brand of electronica fits the dark and mysterious mood of Vessel perfectly, and we’re really excited to present it in this form.

Vessel is built on an optimized liquid simulation featuring flowing water, scalding lava and steam, reactant chemicals, glowing goo, the mysterious “protoplasm,” and more. Each liquid has unique properties and mixes with other liquids for dramatic effects. When the player creates Fluro by placing a seed and giving it liquid of any type, the creature will retain the properties of the liquid they’re made of, giving them the ability to melt, reform, absorb, explode, and more.

12756275353_6ce1d4b000_z.jpg

Users solve puzzles by combining the unique behaviors of each creature with the fluid they’re created from. Every aspect of the world is physically simulated, and all puzzles are based in the liquid simulation. Drop a Drinker Fluro and lure him by spraying goo. Create a Dark Fluro and chase him with light. Liquid and physics are not an aesthetic in Vessel, but the foundation of gameplay. To solve puzzles, you have to think fluidly about life — you have the power to bring to life (and destroy) any liquid, how can you use that to achieve your goals?

Vessel features more than 10 hours of content across multiple worlds, many types of liquids with unique properties, and many ways to bring them to life. Our focus as a studio is to use the power of modern hardware like PS3 to create new kinds of gameplay, not just better graphics.

With our liquid simulation as a foundation for all the characters and puzzles in Vessel, we’re able to make a really unique experience not yet explored in video games.

Our final PlayStation game announcement of the month is something I’ve wanted to talk about for a really long time. I’m now very happy to be able to tell you about our plans to bring the critically acclaimed puzzle-platformer, The Swapper, to PS3, PS4 and PS Vita this year.

The Swapper was released in 2013 on PC, and has had some amazing press coverage. It won numerous awards in the indie gaming scene for its story, graphics and puzzle design. We’re very lucky to be working with original developer Olli Harjola to bring the game to PlayStation formats, and the game is already looking beautiful on our PlayStation systems here at Curve towers, so we think you’re in for a real treat.

12792965295_029fdabd65_z.jpg

The Swapper is set on Theseus, a damaged space station and research facility. It’s a claustrophobic, dark, and atmospheric environment, but it’s also very unique in style — there’s no blocky pixel art and digital textures in this game, but instead handcrafted art and clay models designed by the original developers.

These real world props make up the many different environments in the game and provide The Swapper with an art style that feels realistic and is dripping with tons of detail. This is a game where the environment tells a story every bit as much as the dialogue in the game, so we’ve been working very hard at Curve to make sure each version we make looks and sounds perfect.

As for the game itself, it’s your job to search for a way off Theseus station, a (mostly) abandoned, self-sustaining outpost in deep space. I won’t spoil the plot here, but The Swapper has some themes and stories every bit as dark as the games environment, and it’s very satisfying to play through. To aid your navigation in the station, you’re able to create up to four clones of yourself and can switch between them at will in order to solve a huge variety of clever puzzles.

12792965965_b1e72c33f1_z.jpg

We’ll be talking about the game in a bit more depth over the next few months, but we should be releasing The Swapper in late May this year, so if you’re into puzzle games, science-fiction, or just want to try something really unique, keep an eye out for this one!

As always, I’m more than happy to answer any questions in the comments below!

Last week’s Flare Path contained a thorough report regarding Air Marshal Stone’s experiences in French fantasy flight simulator BOMB. As bold as its capitalised letters, the game is an alternate history explosion of air buccaneers, sky pirates and casino-baiting. Robbing a casino with naught but a biplane and my wits ranks fairly high on the bucket list and while BOMB doesn’t have a heist component, it’s feats of derring-do invoke memories of Crimson Skies’ roguish charm. The game is now available, although it’s set to be released in five stages. The current build contains the first act (six missions) of the campaign, a skirmish mode, and multiplayer deathmatch, with a team variant. It’s currently £7.75 through Desura and updates are planned monthly, through to June.

Man, giant robots are such a hassle. They break everything, have no regard for my pristine white polar bear rug, and – oh yeah – they’re really goddamn big. Too big to fit in closets, on airplanes, or, apparently, on hard drives. That’s the only explanation I can muster for Titanfall‘s whopping 48 gigabyte hard drive requirement, given that it’s multiplayer-only, not exactly the nexest of “next-gen” games from a graphical standpoint, and isn’t utterly ridden with cut-scenes like, say, Max Payne 3. But then, maybe I’m jumping the sedan-sized gun on this one. After all, the exact nuts and bolts of Titanfall’s multiplayer story are still shrouded in mystery. Which is to say, a giant robot is standing in front of them, and it won’t get out of the way.

Survival sims might be unnerving conflict machines in this brutal modern era, but I remember a more affable time. Games like Lemmings and Brat placed the player in charge of vulnerable and mindless creatures (lemmings and babies, respectively), unable to control them directly but responsible for their continued existence. Back To Bed is a return to that gentler age, asking the player to protect a hapless sleepwalker in a strange world. Since we last looked, outside investment has allowed the student team to form a studio and they will now complete the game and begin work on its spiritual successor.
