It’s that time of week again, the strange, giddy twilight between the new week and the old. It gives me strength, allowing me to briefly evolve from my larval news slave form into a full-blown human being with thoughts and feelings and a face. “What should I do with this incredible yet oh-so-fleeting window of opportunity?” I wonder aloud. “Fight crime? Raise money for good causes? Escape from RPS’ dank news basement and finally start a family?” But usually, I just end up playing videogames with a camera on my face. Yes, we’re rather late with this week’s episode due to various complicating factors, but shhhhh, shhhh, it’s all going to be OK now.

This time, Floorlord Hayden Dingman and I are going to jump between Thief, Resident Evil 4 HD, and maybe a little Warehouse and Logistics Simulator because I don’t even know why. We’ll kick off at 6 PM PT/2 AM GMT. Tune in below!

If the Oscar party you've got planned for tomorrow night is less about drinks and dresses and more about the undead and brain-bashing, boy does Sega have a deal for you: meet the Silver Screen Lexicon Pack DLC for Typing of the Dead: Overkill, where the game's words and phrases have been replaced by some of cinema's most quotable quotes.

Unlike a box of chocolates, you know just what you're gonna get here: film references up the wazoo for $2.99. You'll need to type in phrases like "life finds a way" and "Houston, we have a problem" in order to take out those damn dirty zombies. If you can't keep up, not only will we have a failure to communicate, but *whisper voice* you'll see dead people; lots more than you would otherwise.

So carpe diem; seize the day, zombie-hunter-slash-typing enthusiasts. Go out and win one for the Gipper. [Image: Sega]

Loadout developer Edge of Reality announced yesterday that the build-what-you-want, shoot-everyone-in-sight game had more than 2 million accounts get locked 'n' loaded - that's "created" in layman's terms - in the short span of two weeks.

Note that this is 2 million accounts, not necessarily 2 million players. Nonetheless, it's an impressive figure for the free-to-play shooter. After all, those who signed up for Loadout's mayhem have logged more than 9 million hours since its release on January 31. That's a lot of bullets no matter which way you shoot it. Twitch has announced the final statistics for cultural phenomenon Twitch Plays Pokemon, which came to a dramatic close earlier today. And while only one pokemon trainer can be the very best, more than 1.1 million people tried. The actual number of TPP "players" - as in, those who entered commands in the game's chat - totaled 1,165,140, according to the Twitch official blog. As if that weren't quite ridiculous enough, here's some more rare candy to chew on:
  • Total time: 16 days, 7 hours, 45 minutes and 30 seconds
  • Peak players: 121,000
  • Commands issued: More than 122 million
  • Onlookers: More than 9 million
  • Total views: More than 36 million
  • Total minutes watched: More than 1 billion
For reference, the total number of views is more than twice that of Shanghai, the city with the highest recorded population in the world. Granted those aren't all unique views, but that's still a freaking lot of views.

Unofficial stats have also been collected by the community, for those who'd like to know just when each magical moment transpired. According to one account, it took Twitch Plays Pokemon 22 tries to beat the Elite Four. It only took them two tries to beat Blue, the game's archenemy. Two!

The weight of TPP cannot be overstated - aside from the various memes and religions it's created, there's even a petition to have the US government officially recognize March 1 as Helix Day. Praise Helix. [Image: The Pokemon Company]

Sumatran tigers will be the first species to benefit from a partnership between Microsoft and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), wherein Microsoft donates $10,000 to a wildlife-oriented charity every time players of Zoo Tycoon complete a chosen Community Challenge.

Developer Frontier also released the above dev diary detailing the studio's collaboration with the AZA, including how the studio studied real-life zoos to reproduce realistic animals, behavior and habitats in-game. Frontier also translated what they learned from the real world into the game's Zoopedia, a collection of facts about the animals players take care of. The more you know! [Image: Microsoft]

Never mind the uncomfortably dubious gender politics, the biggest offence here is the inability to capitalise on rock-solid action foundations.

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Aaron "NintendoTwizer" Norton...

N: You've amassed an amazing collection of classic Nintendo games. When did you start collecting, and what inspired you to do so?

AN: I’ve always collected something. From an early age it was pennies, rocks, keys, baseball hats and so on. Displaying and acquiring “collectable” items has always been part of my personality. I’ve also been gaming from a young age. I was never a kid who traded in games when I was done with them, I’d just stick them on my shelf. About four years ago I discovered an online classic gaming forum. I was amazed at the amount of people who were still passionate about these dusty old systems and games. This really sparked my interest. From there I began searching out games online, at thrift stores and garage sales.
