The following comes from Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe...

"Well, for example, there's a company called Nintendo. Over there, they made hanafuda cards, but gradually the people playing hanafuda decreased. However, that company called Nintendo makes hanafuda cards and whatnot, and I believe that only by doing that, it wasn't able to protect hanafuda. ...and at the same time, it is keeping the traditional hanafuda cards. For sure, I think this is something that we can learn from."

This was the response given when Mr. Abe was asked about a plan for growth in Japan. Mr. Abe knows Nintendo's past and present quite well. Nintendo saw the writing on the wall for hanafuda cards and moved into video games, but Nintendo still provides cards to this day. There's definitely a lesson to be learned!

Rating Category: Mature

Content Descriptors: Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol

Other: Includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U)

Rating Summary: This is third-person shooter/action game in which players assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a hacker trying to find an evil mastermind. Players use pistols, machine guns, assault rifles, and explosives to kill various human enemies (e.g., criminals, police officers). When close to an enemy, players are able to shoot them in the head or knock them out with a black jack. Players have the ability to kill captives after (mostly) off-screen interrogations. Cutscenes depict further instances of violence (e.g., a man stabbed in the neck and shot multiple times). Combat is highlighted by cries of pain, blood-splatter effects, and realistic gunfire. During the course of the game, female characters sometimes appear topless. One scene depicts women auctioned off to a room full of male buyers; in another scene, sexual moaning sounds can be heard behind walls. The central character is sometimes depicted drinking alcohol; after each shot, players are prompted to steady Aiden's blurred vision/balance. In a few instances, characters are described as “addicted to narcotics” or “convicted of drug trafficking.” The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” can be heard in the dialogue.

Toby’s Island is currently seeking $20,000 CAD on Kickstarter and has managed to raise a tenth of that total in a couple of days. It’s easy to see why early pledges have been forthcoming because the pitch suggests that this is a game that includes fishing and farming. Toby is a boy who collects monsters so that those monsters can fight other monsters. That sounds a little bit like a game by Uncle Nintendo. But there’s more. Toby also grows food and assists in the construction and expansion of a small settlement. That sounds like another one of Uncle Nintendo’s favourite riffs. The two-person development team hope to build on the concepts that have inspired them, with random events, minigames and a ‘multi evolution path’.

Bohemia Interactive is adding new people to the DayZ development team, "effectively doubling the whole project," the studio writes in an update on Tumblr.

Bohemia is currently focused on fixing key bugs and starting work on new features, and last week it began developing a cooking system inspired by The Indie Stone's Project Zomboid. Players place food in a stove or fireplace, where it cooks or turns into edible things such as soup, and the items can become overcooked or cold. March signals a focus on survival mechanics, Bohemia says.

DayZ creator and project leader, Dean Hall, plans to leave Bohemia Interactive by the end of the year to start his own studio in New Zealand. The team expansion and Hall's departure announcement are unrealated, Bohemia tells Polygon.

"I have a specific use," Hall said in last week's announcement. "I'm really good at risk-taking and making other people take risks, I've always been good at that in my life. But eventually, that's the bad person to have. Eventually, you don't want the guy telling you to go over the top and get through. So at some point I'll be a disaster for the project, at least in a leadership role."

Dan Pearce won a BAFTA for his work with The Tall Trees on Castle In The Sky, a pastel-coloured platforming picture book about a young boy adrift in the clouds. It only makes sense that his solo project 10 Second Ninja, then, is about a ninja hacking his way through legions of inert machines under the command of Robot Hitler. It’s a swastika-laden game about mastery: you chain together shuriken throws and sword slashes to rid of a level of all its enemies within a ten second time limit, and then do it again to shave more seconds off your time.

Faster times equal more stars, more stars equal unlocked boss fights and new worlds, and new levels with slight twists like enemies which require two strikes, or portals which you and your shuriken can travel through. And that’s wot I think.

FAIL. Ah, wait, yeah. I left enemies on the field, and forgot to offer any critical judgement of the game I’m writing about. Let me try that again. … [visit site to read more]

Hi PlayStation.Blog readers! I’m Daniel Posner, reaching out to you from Toronto, Canada. My long-time friend, Rich Hilmer, and I recently co-founded a brand new indie game studio called Finish Line Games. Along with guru programmer friend Matt Robinson, Rich and I have been working on a passion project over the past few years, and we’re super excited to announce the fruits of our labor: Cel Damage HD, a high definition re-release of the original, vehicular combat game that debuted back in 2001.

It’s cold in Toronto at the moment, but spring is right around the corner. We’ll be celebrating the end of the cold with the explosive launch of Cel Damage HD on PlayStation Store as a cross-buy purchase for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. That’s right, buy it for one system and you can play it on all three!

Some of you might remember this timeless classic, but let me refresh you on everything Cel Damage HD has to offer. Part Demolition Derby, part Whacked-Out Cartoon Come to Life, Cel Damage HD allows you to play as up to 10 crazy characters/vehicles with more than 30 over-the-top weapons. Play in either Smack Attack (deathmatch), Flag Rally (capture-the-flag) or Gate Relay (race), across 13 fully-interactive cartoon environments.

In addition to being a cross-buy product, Cel Damage HD supports cross save so you can pick up where you left off on any system. Play on PS Vita to master Cel Damage HD’s chaotic gameplay on the go, then go destroy your friends in 2, 3, or 4-player split-screen multiplayer on PS4 or PS3. Cel Damage HD truly shines in split-screen play. Like an instant party, this game brings back the shout-out-loud, couch chaos gaming experiences of a cherished era — now in full high-def goodness!

I want to give a big shout-out to the original Cel Damage team and say thanks for such an awesome time and so many fantastic memories. This re-release is dedicated to all of you.

To find out about all the latest game happenings, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter. And of course, check back here — we’ll have more to share next month!
