For eight years, a group of modders have been working on reworking DICE's Battlefield 2 into a much more realistic and much larger-scale multiplayer shooter. In August, their journey came to an end, and the 1.0 version of their mod, Project Reality, was released. Now, the same group is working on a full game.Read more...

It's been forever since a Halo game was released on the PC. Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo Reach and Halo 4 have all come and gone, without a PC version in sight. So it's clear that if fans of the series want a game on their personal computers, they're going to have to make it themselves.Read more...

A Crytek job listing outs the company's intent to bring its CryEngine 3 development suite to the Linux platform. The potential new recruit will be responsible for maintaining Linux support in the engine, providing training to internal and external developers and helping out with game prototypes.

CryEngine 3 is Crytek's latest iteration of its proprietary game development solution, an engine the company both licenses out to other game developers and supplies to universities. Some notable upcoming games being built in CryEngine 3 include Shadow of the Eternals and Star Citizen.

Here is a very interesting thing that just so happens to have yielded intensely pretty results. The short version? We get to go “Ooooooooooooo high dynamic range spectral gazelle mapping slobber slobber moo” but also “Oh yes, hmmm, oh indeed, yes.” It’s all thanks to Enodo, a French company that’s realized games could have tremendous practical potential in the realm of real-world industrial design. Its plan, then, is to use CryEngine 3 to create interactive models of the building forests (and sometimes, regular forests) of tomorrrrrrrrrrrrow. Now, today’s demo is just a proof-of-concept video, but goodness, would you look at that?

I think that’s a giant squirrel in the screenshot. I could find out if it is, but to be told it’s not would only make me sad. And the odd cropping is odd because I refused to chop the tip off that magnificent sword the player is wielding. The two together can only mean one thing. Monster Hunter Online! It’s the newly announced MMO based the Capcom console game that everyone on my Twitter feed seems to scrabbling around in. It’s currently only planned as a Chinese free-to-play title, but we know such distinctions are meaningless and arbitrary in the world of PC gaming. If enough people want it, it will happen. Just ask publishers Tencent to run it through Google Translate.(more…)

Crytek is showcasing the latest version of its CryEngine 3 technology at GDC and has produced this video highlighting various games built using the engine. Games run the gamut from the expected shooters to racing and even some hack-and-slash action stuff. Also, a golf game.

A dedicated group of TimeSplitters fans have taken it upon themselves to create a new, free game for like-minded folks: TimeSplitters Rewind. Developed with permission from CryTek and using assets from actual TimeSplitters games as reference material, Rewind is being constructed in CryEngine 3 and will focus primarily on multiplayer.

While there is no further visual evidence of the game beyond the above logo and this rendered duck person, project manager Michael Hubicka has stated that a demo for Rewind should be available by Christmas. "The demo will be more or less a beta," Hubicka told Cooking with Grenades. "We plan to release patches to fix glitches/bugs/exploits/performance issues and Content Updates to add maps and characters."

Eventually, Hubicka hopes that Rewind will also include remade versions of the single-player story content from TimeSplitters' history, but the initial goal of the project is to faithfully recreate the most well-known multiplayer components within CryEngine 3. New multilpayer modes are in the works, however, though their eventual inclusion will depend on if the end result "feels right."

Can I declare that we’re in the middle of a Stealth Renaissance yet? Because I really want to, but I’m afraid that I’ll frighten our good fortune and it’ll skulk back into the all-consuming shadows from whenst it came. But come on: between Mark of the Ninja, Dishonored, and Hitman, we’re set for the remainder of this year. Now if only we had some under-the-radar contender to leap out of nowhere and shatter our necks with sheer potential. If only. Oh well. I guess you should just leave no– hrrrggggrrkk [sounds of a neck shattering].

You know it and I know it, the folks are Crytek are wizards wielding staves that fire picture-perfect environments. A new, gorgeous video showing enhancements made to CryEngine 3 - the power behind the upcoming shooter Crysis 3 - only serves to further prove that point.

I approach engine tech demos with caution, as if they were primed to explode, or at least deceive me with their promises and lies. They’re not necessarily representative of anything that will actually be seen in a game, unless you’re one of those people who reckons iD games are tech demos, in which case they’re the most reliably accurate tech demos of all. The new video advertising CryEngine 3 is utterly gorgeous, with lots of flashy pop-up text describing what’s onscreen, whether its ‘vegetation simulation’ or ‘tessellated toad tech’, but take the embellishments away and there’s still something impressive and that’s the world of Crysis 3. Recognisable urban ruins being swallowed by the return of greenery, and water freed from pipes and cisterns. It’s splendid and makes me want to do more in these surroundings than shoot people.

In response to our various sightings of Crysis 3, the RPS stronghold is currently flying these flags: blue with green braiding, taupe with a cyan crucifix and burple with vibrant lavender thistle emblems. And we all know what that says about our opinions on Crytek’s next shooter. Even as we debate the openy worlidiness or lack thereof of Prophet’s latest alien-hectoring rampage, it’s worth keeping in mind that Crytek have, by and large, been good for game technology. Crysis 3 brings assorted updates to Cryengine 3, but it’s the Rig of Rods team that are demonstrating some rather tasty soft body (missus) physics that they’ve pulled off in the new version of the engine. The below is unfinished footage of an unnamed vehicular game, and it’s just about the best pretend car-crumpling and wobbly suspension I believe I’ve ever seen.(more…)

The US Army has been building a training game for its soldiers to play, and the company behind the project, called RealTime Immersive, Inc., has just released two trailers showing off the game's graphics, powered by CryEngine 3. If it looks good, it's because the powers that be have spent $57 million on the project. For that price, there better be dedicated servers and LAN support.

Keep in mind this is just a tease -- this game is meant for internal training by the Army, and so it isn't something the public will get to play in any major way. Besides, can the Army hire a group of racist teenagers to yell at soldiers as they perform the in-game training operations?

Still no in-game images yet, but we’ve just learned that Mechwarrior Online will use CryEngine 3. “It is definitely the best choice for us,” said Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. “Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly and allow us to develop a truly unique AAA experience based on the award-winning BattleTech Universe.” Perhaps not too much of a surprise choice, either, given that Crysis mod. I also rather like the description of the “four pillars” of the game: “Mech Warfare, the embodiment of Mech to Mech combat. Role Warfare, the ability for player’s to customize their experience to suit their own style of gameplay. Community Warfare, the ability to let the players take part in epic combat for territorial control. Information Warfare, an element on the battlefield that incorporates information technology to help control the fight.” If they can nail all of those then it could be a fine, fine mech game.

It hasn't even been a week since Crytek announced the availability of a free (for non-commercial use!) CryEngine 3 SDK and already the German developer is touting over 100,000 downloads. With everything you need to make a great looking game, Crytek's gamble is that by lowering the barrier to entry, it will increase the number of developers comfortable with its technology.

The worst (best) case scenario is that if a developer strikes it rich using the freely available tools, they need only license the technology for a 20% cut of the revenues. It remains to be seen if this approach will result in seeing more CryEngine 3-powered AAA games on retailer's shelves, but with steady (and ubiquitous) competition from Epic's Unreal Engine and its oh-so-similar free-for-commercial-use UDK, Crytek is at least staying competitive. Now, let's see if we get 100,000 beautiful indie games anytime soon.

The above video of Undead Labs' Class3 isn't exactly what we'd call gameplay per se, but it is our first glimpse at what the survival simulator will roughly look like once it eventually shambles its way onto XBLA. The game will run on CryEngine 3, and despite still being in the earliest of development stages, things are looking pretty solid for an XBLA game.

Don't these zombies have anything better to do than to stand around all day, though? Get a job, zombies!

Having played Crysis 2, the latest from the former technical innovators at Crytek, I have to express that I’m not only horrified, but also shocked, at the paucity of graphical accomplishments in what should have been a groundbreaking game. It’s quite clear that massive compromises have been made in order to keep the console market happy, meaning the PC version of the game is crippled to the point where it’s literally impossible to look at without feeling physically sick. I have put together some detailed analysis of the differences between CryEngine 2 and CryEngine 3, to prove that the developers have let everyone down.
