If you've ever wanted to cruise around in a tank but lack the funding and proper military clearance to hop inside one of the metal beasts, this weekend may be your golden opportunity thanks to the Xbox 360 incarnation of Wargaming's online hit World of Tanks.

From now until midnight on Sunday, March 30, all Xbox 360 owners will be able to download World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition and join in the online tank battles at no charge. Players who enjoy the free trial enough to purchase World of Tanks will be pleased to learn that this free weekend coincides with the "World of Tanks' Map Madness Community Challenge." As part of that event, every tank destroyed over the course of the next few days will go toward unlocking new multiplayer maps for the game.

You can find the free World of Tanks download by visiting the Xbox Live Marketplace from your console, or by simply clicking through. [Image: Wargaming]

Here’s an interesting aspect of long-term game development: if you build a game where you’re continually adding units across a number of years, you will see a marked difference in model quality between the first creations and the newer models. It can’t be helped. For some games that might not matter, but World of Tanks is about tanks and the people who love to pay for them, so it benefits Wargaming to ensure that those earlier models are returned to the high standards of the latterly built ones. That process has been captured in a video, and there’s a lot to be excited about if you care about polygon counts and the smoothness of tank barrels.

Destructo-porn ahoy! World of Tanks continues to be massively (almost bewilderingly) popular, but there’s no two ways about it: its underlying systems are getting a little creaky. Thus, Wargaming is getting ready to oil up the free-to-play phenom’s crunchiest gears by introducing large-scale destructibility. When shells hit buildings, they will crumble literally brick-by-brick. Unless they are not made of bricks, in which case they will crumble other-thing-by-other-thing. I haven’t played World of Tanks in a bit, but I’m not gonna lie: this is pretty darn impressive. Take that, uh, Battlefield 4 I guess.

Wargaming's free-to-play tactical multiplayer combat game World of Tanks is now up for grabs for Xbox Live Gold subscribers on the Xbox 360, with a seven-day timed trial available for XBL Silver members.

Previously released for PC platforms, World of Tanks offers a selection of team-based tank warfare scenarios across seven playable maps. World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition boasts a new control scheme suited for twin-stick controllers, along with a new HDTV-optimized UI that should aid veteran players transitioning from PC to console.

Through the end of the month, first-time players can purchase two Founder's Packs at a discounted rate using in-game currency, expanding their arsenal with premium tanks, extra ammunition, and other bonus equipment. A bonus Russian T-127 light premium tank is available for players who purchase both Founder's Packs.

The Xbox 360 version of World of Tanks will launch February 12, Wargaming announced. The game will retain its free-to-play-with-premium-purchases structure, but will require an Xbox Live Gold membership. Those with a free Xbox Live account will have access to a trial version of the game for seven days.

The tactical, team-based online war game will include over 100 tanks from the Unites States, Germany and United Kingdom. World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition entered beta in August 2013. A worldwide open beta has been initiated for World of Tanks on Xbox 360. Anyone with an Xbox Live account can jump into the beta right now on through this weekend, up until the virtual tanks are directed back to the garage on December 15.

If you don't have an Xbox Live Gold subscription, participating in the beta will net you a seven-day trial period. Those who have already claimed their free seven-day trial can re-up for another seven days as part of this weekend's beta test.

Wargaming.net's World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition was announced back in June at E3. The free-to-play online multiplayer combat game pits players against each other in mid-20th century tanks. World of Tanks will not feature cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and PC, and players will have to register separate accounts in order to play on their platform of choice.

There is no debate that Wargaming's online tank simulator World of Tanks is as realistic as it can be. It's relatively slow and tactical. But sometimes it gets a little too realistic and out of control, mostly when you land on other tanks. Tony Hawk and skaters would be proud of that huge 180.Read more...

The CEO of World of Tanks-developer Wargaming, Victor Kislyi, said that his team is working with Microsoft to streamline an "unacceptable" certification and quality assurance process in its effort to launch the popular free-to-play game on the Xbox 360 later this year.

At PAX Australia speaking with Polygon, Kislyi said that the "frequent updates" required to tweak online games posed a challenge for Microsoft's current certification process, which takes "an extremely long time."

"Totally unacceptable for meaningful free-to-play," he said, promising his team was working with Microsoft to ensure "quicker updates."

"We will see, there is a lot of work on the technically side and on the administrative side which should resolve in the acceptable quality of the product, including updates of the product including speed and rates," Kislyi said, unable to confirm whether Microsoft will offer a similar streamlined certification process to other developers. When asked about other challenges his team may face bringing the previously PC-exclusive free-to-play game to consoles, Kislyi admitted making any predictions about the unreleased version was "not very wise."

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition is currently undergoing a beta test, with sign-ups available on the game's official website.

A few more pieces from Atari's intellectual property catalog, which has been on clearance sale for a little while now, have new owners. Of note is the Total Annihilation and Master of Orion franchises being picked up by World of Tanks developer Wargaming World Limited, while the Star Control series is now in the hands of Galactic Civilizations developer Stardock.

"We're very excited to publish a new Star Control game. We are inclined to go with an XCOM-like reboot using Star Control 2 as a major source of inspiration," said Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Stardock to Joystiq. "By rebooting the series á la XCOM, we can bring a new generation of gamers into a fun, silly space adventure. We hope to involve as many of the original designers and developers of the series, along with the fan base. It's important to us that Star Control remain true to its origins as much as is possible."

Wargaming has yet to respond to our request about its plans. We've placed the list of the latest Atari IP winners after the break. The winning bids were not disclosed.

Playing as artillery and providing powerful long range support in the team-based MMO World of Tanks is a role of great responsibility, where your skill matters a lot. So as this 8-bit video shows, things can go wrong easily if you can't distinguish your allies ... or if you're a cat. Just think about this video before yelling at your artillery support whenever it does something completely weird. 8 bit Tales: Artillery is on the Watch [YouTube] To contact the author of this post, write to gergovas@kotaku.com

World of Tanks Xbox 360 Edition will enter open beta in the "relatively near future," Wargaming General Manager Denny Thorley said during a demo at E3. The beta will begin in North America and Canada, and roll out to other countries later on. Beta registration is open now at the game's website.

The beta will likely include four maps and a majority of the full game's 60 total tanks at first, Thorley said.

World of Tanks Xbox 360 Edition won't feature cross-play between PC and console. It supports online multiplayer for up to 30 players - 15 vs. 15 - with no single-player or local multiplayer content at launch. Wargaming may add single-player tutorials or other comparable content in the future.

It's free-to-play for Xbox Live Gold members, and all other Live users will get a free seven-day trial. The monetization strategy on XBLA will be slightly different than its PC predecessor, though Thorley said he couldn't go into detail about specific packages.

"I think you're going to find some similarities," Thorley said. "There are areas that may be slightly different."

The major differences between the PC and Xbox 360 versions of World of Tanks will be the control scheme - surprise, the console edition uses a controller - and some user interface tweaks to better suit a couch perspective.

Wargaming.net believe that war should take place on a level playing field. Money may make the world go round but it won’t buy you any extra-powerful rounds for your weaponry, whether those weapons be attached to tanks, planes or automobiles ships. In an interview with Gamasutra, Andrei Yarantsau, VP of publishing at the Russian behemoth, stated that the World of Tanks and other forthcoming titles, including World of Warplanes and World of Warships, would operate on a ‘free to win’ basis. This seems like good news.

You want tanks? Oh, Company of Heroes 2 has your tanks. It's got an entire world of tanks. It also has things that aren't tanks, which is something you can't say about World of Tanks why are we doing this? Perhaps you are confused, Sega, being new to the whole Company of Heroes thing. You don't have to poke at games that share the same sort of setting, especially when they are really two very different animals. Here's how you market Company of Heroes 2 — that was it, you just say the name. Put it in a nice font. Slap it on a jay-peg or jiff and put it on the Steam store page. If you want to get fancy with a trailer called "More Than Tanks", then that's your thing, but you really missed out on not doing a parody of Extreme's "More Than Words" to go along with it.

Two Chinese companies are being taken to court by developers Wargaming.net, accused of stealing intellectual property to complete their game Project Tank. Wargaming - who are behind one of the biggest games in the world, World of Tanks - have made the accusation in claiming Project Tanks is "disturbingly similar" to their own title, and have filed suit in the United States Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Interestingly, rather than file a "no comment", the developers of Project Tanks have hit back on their company site, issuing the following statement: Wargaming.net LLP (developer & publisher of World of Tanks) has recently launched a series of underhand actions against Project Tank, including using their connections to shut down our facebook page (http:/www.facebook.com/projecttankofficial), over PT’s purported “infringement” of their intellectual property rights. Continuously sabotaged by Wargaming, Project Tank and Gamebox have never intended to pose a threat or compete at any platform with World of Tanks. The graphics used in Project Tank are our efforts to reconstruct WWII battle scenes. We feel truly shocked and bullied by Wargaming, a giant company of the gaming industry who is apparently “threatened” by a closed beta phase browser game aiming to provide a cheaper, fairer, and more accessible war game to players around the world. I've only played World of Tanks, so can't vouch for how similar they are when you get to the gameplay, but a quick search shows the loadout screens of both games are awfully similar. User accounts for World of Tanks, one of the biggest games in the world, have been comprised following what the game's publisher calls a "security incident". While stating "no financial information was accessed", operators Wargaming does say "some password hashes and email addresses may have been affected by the compromise", and as a result is urging users to change their passwords. They're doing more than just asking nicely, too. In order to really get people moving, users are being offered 300 units of World of Tanks' in-game currency just for resetting their password. You can read the full statement from Wargaming below. Tankers! As a part of our usual security practices we recently became aware that some personal information may have been compromised due to a security incident. We immediately launched an investigation into the incident and can assure you thatno financial information was accessed. However, we believe that some password hashes and email addresses may have been affected by the compromise. The security of your account is very important to us at Wargaming. As a precaution, we are launching a global campaign to increase the security of your account. I can’t be the only one who appreciates the ever-narrowing gap between official World of Tanks footage and nature documentaries, can I? There’s a certain grace to their low-speed loping, and recent products of Wargaming’s virtual camerawork have captured that in a way that just begs for overly embellished narration. But I digress. New tanks! After originally being announced for update 8.2, Chinese tanks are instead marching eager treads onto the battlefield as part of 8.3. You can hop in right this second, too. Well, that was quick. World of Tanks‘ Britain-themed 8.1 update – unfortunately not titled “Sir, You Are Being Hunted (By Tanks)” – came out just a hair over a week ago, and now Wargaming’s already rallying the troops for update 8.2. This time around, the focus is mainly on a new Chinese tank tree, which actually houses creaking death machines you can buy in succession, but sounds like something humanity must never genetically engineer. And while that’s certainly the main event of 8.2, it’s lugging in a smattering of other bits and bobs as well.
