Between website updates and overseas magazines, it feels like I've already learned enough about Resident Evil Revelations. I'm ready to just play the game, which is being described by Capcom as an installment just as big as its predecessor, Resident Evil 5. Still, during a recent presentation for the game, I learned a few more details. Here's what you need to know...

Capcom has learned its lesson. During its Gamer's Day event in San Francisco, the company confirmed that Resident Evil: Revelations would allow players to wipe their save data, should they choose. For the unaware, this lack of functionality in Capcom's previous 3DS title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, caused quite an uproar. Admittedly, it's possible to wipe the save data, it's just extremely complicated.

In addition to that news nugget, Capcom also revealed that Resident Evil: Revelations will support the Circle Pad Pro, but currently has no plans to offer a bundle. The Circle Pad Pro is currently slated to launch in Japan on December 10. Nintendo has yet to reveal launch details for North America.

Capcom had a working unit on hand at Gamer's Day, which we soiled with our sweaty mitts - you can read all about it here. Resident Evil: Revelations launches on February 7.

"The story mode in the game is something we created with the single-player experience in mind. I would like everyone to play the game in their bedroom with the lights off and headphones on. That's the way to experience the mode. At the same time, these games we create, we know they're really enjoyable when you're able to share some of that experience with a friend. Multiplayer is very important and that communication is something that resonates with everyone. We felt putting Raid Mode in, in this kind of structure, allowed us to do that for this game as well." - Revelations assistant producer Tsukasa Takenaka

- fourth playable character in Revelations' campaign: Keith Lumley
- Lumley has a partner, Quint Cetcham
- they are the comic relief
- the duo is described as nerdy
- the pair face off against invisible hunters

"Previous Resident Evil games have featured maybe not so many characters. In older Resident Evil games the story takes place from one or two characters' perspectives and progresses with them from beginning to end.

This game is different in that you see a lot of different viewpoints from a lot of different characters. The viewpoints shift around. That's one of the things we're talking about with the episodic structure of the story. You get to see things unfold from different characters in different times, and we found different kinds of characters makes that even more compelling.

They do seem a bit comical, but when you see how they fit into the story and what they bring to the experience, they're definitely Resident Evil characters."

- features an "Enhance 3D depth slider"
- allows players to widen or narrow the 3D effect
- select from normal, strong and very strong
- Western version of the game includes the Japanese voice over as a bonus
- allows you to reset your game save data

- Circle Pad Pro name confirmed
- uses the "Type D" controller layout
- option to calibrate the Circle Pad Pro

"It was for us kind of a no brainer. As soon as we found out Nintendo had this peripheral, we thought this is something we can use to provide another bit of customisation for the game. We instantly decided to support it.

When we decided that we thought, we have to do it fully, we have to create a whole other control scheme based just around this peripheral. We went ahead and did that, and we felt it was the right decision and it paid off because it feels like the right way to play the game.

For certain people, playing the game with the Circle Pad Pro, they may find it's easier to control the characters, and therefore it does make the game a little easier.

But in terms of priorities, the thing most important was providing players with a control scheme that felt most natural for them. Basically, something that made it natural and easy to control the character. The controls fade away and you become part of the experience. We felt a lot of people might resonate with this control scheme and that's why we decided to put it in."

So, you know that 3DS circle pad attachment Capcom's greatest scientists toiled over? Well, get this: Famitsu reveals (via Andriasang) that it'll be used for aiming in Resident Evil: Revelations. For the recently unfrozen cavemen out there, the left pad will be used for movement, while the expansion on the right will be used for aiming and rotating your character. Also, we destroyed the dinosaur scourge and display their bones in museums as a warning to other massive lizards. You're welcome.

Resident Evil: Revelations launches on February 7 in North America.

Capcom has never been one to shy away from aggressively utilizing its core intellectual properties, however iteration often translates to evolution, which can be interpreted as abandonment by the minds of die-hard fans. But, that might not be such a bad thing.

"We think that certainly some people's expectations will be violated, but that's, in our minds, a good thing," said producer Masachika Kawata, speaking on the Resident Evil series during an interview with Gamasutra. "It will hopefully get people to play something that they weren't expecting."

Resident Evil has arguably seen more drastic paradigm shifts than any other Capcom franchise, with the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City fully embracing the shooter seeds planted by Resident Evils 4 and 5. Kawata views the situation as one of diversity rather than exclusion, however, implying that the Resident Evil franchise has expanded to accommodate many different genres underneath its IP umbrella, including shooters.

Of course, survival horror is still an integral part of Resident Evil's brand image, and Kawata's own Resident Evil: Revelations is said to be "core-fan focused" in a way that makes it similar to Capcom zombie romps of yore. Still, every relationship needs a little spark now and again: "I'm thinking that if we would have brought out all these Resident Evil titles, and they were all focused on survival horror, absolutely I think people would be really sick of Resident Evil."

Capcom's second 3DS Resident Evil adventure, the classic-style Resident Evil Revelations, will be available in North America on February 7, 2012, the publisher announced today.

While Jill, Chris, and their new BSAA cohorts will be surrounded by the environs of a scary cruise ship, you'll have the opportunity to surround your 3DS in an exclusive case if you pre-order from GameStop. The newly announced pre-order bonus bears "an image that changes in the sunlight," a fitting tie-in for such a bright, sunny game.

OK, maybe it's just a fun gimmick, one that makes the 3DS look really creepy.

#residentevil Earlier this month, Capcom surprised a lot of long-time Resident Evil fans by including a character in a trailer for the upcoming Revelations who didn't really fit the aesthetic of the universe. And by that I mean she had a stupid haircut and ridiculous cleavage. More »

Earlier this week we brought you a Resident Evil Revelations trailer that clocked in at just over a minute in length. The footage featured a new character, Rachel, as she explores the cruise ship we've seen throughout many of Capcom's teasers. She runs across the liquid bio-organic weapons we've seen so often and seems to be unconscious and wounded when she's found by Jill Valentine...
