Capcom Drops Resident Evil: Revelations Price By $10

If the mostly positive talk (we'll have a Quick Look up tomorrow) about Resident Evil: Revelations has you considering the series’ debut on 3DS but price is an obstacle, maybe Capcom has worked out a solution.

The company announced this afternoon that Resident Evil: Revelations retail price would be dropping from $49.99, which is more expensive than most games you’d regularly buy for a 3DS, to $39.99--a $10 cut.

“Since the announcement of the $49.99 price point, we've spent weeks looking for a way to bring your cost down to standard 3DS pricing,” said community manager Bret Elston. “Today we can finally confirm we were successful in this, and hope the reduced price encourages even more people to check out this strong entry in the Resident Evil canon.”

It’s unclear what hurdles Capcom lept over in order to bring the price down $10, but for the price sensitive consumer, it doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day, the next Resident Evil is cheaper to buy on February 7.

A couple months ago, Capcom confirmed that its latest Nintendo 3DS title, Resident Evil Revelations, would cost $49.99 - $10 more than a typical release for the system. The publisher's justification at the time was the game needed a 4GB cart versus the standard 2GB that 3DS games routinely come on. Today the publisher has reversed its pricing plan - Resident Evil Revelations will only cost $39.99 when it arrives in stores on February 7...

Revelations is a pick’n’mix of the series’ iconography and mechanics, then. It takes the best and worst of Resident Evils past and present, and spot welds them together unevenly. If the designers had committed wholeheartedly to either polarity of action or horror, Revelations may have been a headshot, but what we’re left with is more like a glancing blow.

The campaign sports the heft and depth of one of the main series entries, a deal made even sweeter by an empowering New Game Plus and worthwhile co-op experience. Stop twiddling your thumbs waiting for Resident Evil 6 and get them on a 3DS.

Resident Evil: Revelations is gorgeous, huge, and offers the most fully-featured online co-op experience on 3DS. The single-player isn't quite the survival horror comeback Capcom promised but, with its brilliant take on score attack, Raid mode ensures Revelations delivers at least once on its title.

The promise of a portable and blockbuster RE is mostly realized, and the control improvements and sense of scale translate effectively, but I sincerely hope Capcom chooses to skew from RE's cheesy past and make more memorable adventures moving forward.

Parts of the Queen Zenobia will surprise and delight, others are starkly reminiscent of old series haunts, but Resident Evil Revelations keeps a tight hold on what made the original games so utterly special. That it exudes such overbearing tension from such a tiny screen is a triumph. This is the first must-buy title of 2012.

Resident Evil: Revelations' is one of the series' best and it is a 3DS essential, a worthy continuation of the release of substantial and technically impressive games on the platform that have been coming out, about one a month, since the fall.

From the NintendoLife review:

While the campaign is varied and fairly lengthy, clocking in at over ten hours, Revelations is packed with extras and additional game modes. In the campaign alone you start with two difficulty settings, while completion of ‘normal’ will unlock the ‘hell’ mode, a New Game+ that allows you to retain weapons and items from the first playthrough. The standard setting is challenging in its own right, with boss fights a sticking point in the balancing of difficulty. We progressed well, with few deaths, until the first major boss encounter: in these difficult sections the otherwise solid controls can perhaps be a problem, with the dodge move – Up and B together with good timing – being particularly awkward.
