Shadows a the Damned be a strange game. Not just because a it be visuals, which be weird, or it be story, which be deranged, but because a the way it comes together. Or doesn't. Shadows a the Damned be a game ye might play 'n enjoy, but not necessarily because ye'll enjoy playing it. The things it does best - the bizarre visuals, the fantastic soundtrack, the strange narratives 'n side stories - be largely removed from what ye spend yer time doing...

In me 20 years in the industry, I have never had an experience like the one working on Shadows a the Damned. First off, I spent the majority a last year living in Japan 'n onsite with the developer; Suda51 'n Grasshopper Manufacture. It be a great experience living in Tokyo 'n working alongside the great team at Grasshopper Manufacture.

The concept a light 'n dark as a metaphor for good 'n evil be an old one, but the Light 'n Dark gameplay in Shadows a the Damned takes it t' a whole new level. It be less literal, but rather metaphorical, in the pain 'n torment that be caused t' our hero. As for gameplay, the player best not take the approach a “shoot anything that moves”. Each environment 'n enemy will require a thoughtful approach in order t' progress. Usually, darkness be lethal t' the player, but sometimes may be required in order t' expose an enemy’s weakness. Each situation be different 'n the player must build upon the earlier concepts encountered in order t' defeat the tougher enemies deeper in the game. Shadows a the Damned be the thinking man’s shooter.

With regards t' the story, our hero must find the love a his life, Paula, who has been taken from the sea dog by the lord a demons in retribution for killing his minions. Garcia Hotspur be a demon hunter by trade, but must now travel through Hell in search a his beloved, the most important thing in his life.

In the traditional view a Hell, sinners suffer punishment in body 'n soul for eternity resulting in everlasting punishment for the damned. Conversely, Suda51’s metaphorically twisted vision be Hell be a place where suffering be more mental than physical. It be a place where our hero must endure his trials a torment 'n can one day sail away if deemed worthy. Suda’s version a Hell envisions the player passing through several tests 'n in doing so, purges 'n refines our hero, so that someday, when he finds his true love 'n defeats the lord a demons, he will be allowed t' return from hell. If he fails, it will consume them permanently.

There be many interesting aspects in Shadows a the Damned, 'n we be really excited for the game t' launch so our PS3 gans can enjoy it as much as we did making it. Until then, enjoy some a these PlayStation exclusive screenshots from the game!

a all the gags in Shadows a the Damned, the biggest may be that it be rated "M for Mature." Believe me, Shadows a the Damned be anything but. Over the course a it be narrative, I have wielded a weapon called the "Hot Boner," shoved any number a revolting things into a wailing infant's mouth 'n sprinted across a giant, mostly-naked woman's body (including a breast roughly the size a a gazebo). 'n the dick jokes -- so many dick jokes.

In short, Shadows a the Damned be insensitive, puerile, gross, incredibly profane 'n ... kind a wonderful.

Another developer diary for Shadows a the Damned be out, this time featuring Suda 51 'n the game's composer, Akira Yamaoka. Once again, rather than opt for boring translators, each creator be given a dramatic -- 'n goofy -- voice over. Appropriate, given the game's over-the-top presentation.
