One week before the release of Ninja Gaiden 3, a previously unseen special edition has popped up on the website of Canadian retailer Video Games Plus. The set inclues a PS3 copy of the game and a special "Dragon Sword" accessory for PlayStation Move that mimics the appearance of Ryu Hayabusa's sword. Or, to put it another way, is a tiny bloody foam sword.

We haven't seen this edition for sale anywhere else, so it's potentially either a Canadian exclusive or something that didn't actually make it to production. It's different from the known collector's edition, anyway. We're asking Tecmo Koei now. We just want to know if we and other mature adults will be able to play this M-rated game with a toy sword.

To become a ninja, one must learn -- the deadly arts of war, for example. Or how to wear those weird socks. Stuff like that.

You can't be any geek off the street, and so Tecmo-Koei has decided to lock the online multiplayer of Ninja Gaiden 3 behind an online pass. So says a listing on Gamefly warning potential renters of Ninja Gaiden 3, anyway.

We've sent our silent inquisitors to Tecmo-Koei to secure confirmation on the matter. We'll let you know what we hear back. Update: It's confirmed! Ninja Gaiden 3 will have an online pass.

[Thanks, Josh!]

- Team Ninja considered giving Ryu's arm curse the form of a snake
- the idea was to make it look scaly up his arm, and then take over his body
- the Curse of the Dragon Sword is a result of karma
- this causes Ryu to be haunted by the hundreds of people that he has killed in the past
- this is to show Ryu's inner conflict
- The Mask of the Regent is Ryu’s rival in this game
- he is a master alchemist, an expert swordsman, and he wants Ryu to suffer
- Mizuki is a half Japanese, half British member of the Air Self-Defense Force
- she plays a secret role in the story

#ninjagaiden I sat down with my katana and PS3 controller recently to play Ninja Gaiden 3. In addition to pausing the game every so often to act out my favorite moves, I put together this video showcasing what Ninja Gaiden 3 has to offer. You'll see blood being flung off of a sword, an unsettling cutscene, and evidence of Ryu Hayabusa's love for birds of prey. More »

If you’re a fan of ninja games, PS Vita won’t leave you wanting – or waiting. The system’s upcoming launch will be supported by two ninja-centric titles: Shinobido 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, and I spent some time with the latter this weekend. NGS+ is an updated version of an early PS3 title, which itself was an enhanced version of an original Xbox game that debuted back in 2004. Despite some control choices which have clearly evolved over the past 8 years, the source material holds up pretty well in 2012.

Playing through the first few levels of the NGS+, memories from nearly a decade ago came flooding back to me: the placement of treasures, decapitating enemies with a single charged slash (hold down the triangle button to, um, execute), and the difficulty. The Ninja Gaiden series resides firmly in the “tough, but fair” challenge department. When you die – and you will – it’s usually not due to AI cheapness, but rather a mistimed block or a delayed dodge. That doesn’t mean the game can’t get frustrating, but when you prevail, the frustration melts into delicious satisfaction. For those having trouble, NGS+ adds Hero Mode, which helps automates some blocking and dodging to help you along. There’s no shame in it.

Ninja Gaiden was one of the best looking games around when it first debuted, and NGS+ still looks nice on PS Vita. While it doesn’t approach an Uncharted Golden Abyss level visually, it’s better looking on Vita’s OLED than an 8 year old game ought to look.

Tecmo’s Team Ninja has added a number of features to take advantage of the new Vita hardware, such as six axis arrow shooting and touchscreen prompts to enhance your Ninpo magic attacks. I had trouble adjusting to the new controls in first-person view, but fortunately, they’re optional.

The most significant addition to NGS+ is the new Ninja Challenge mode, a series of snack-sized trials can be completed in just a couple of minutes – geared toward gamers on the go. Each of these 76 missions provides a straightforward goal, such as clearing a certain amount of enemies, taking on a boss character, or engaging in a weapon-specific objective. This is also where you can use use alternate character Rachel, and try out new costumes and weapons that you might not have earned yet in the story mode.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma arrived on PS3 before the advent of PSN Trophies, so NGS+ is the first to incorporate the addictive baubles. I took a look at the Trophy list, and most of the rewards involve killing lots of dudes with each weapon, or by mastering techniques such as the powerful Izuna drop.

I can confirm that Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus is no longer a “launch window” title – it’ll be ready for launch day title. If you’re picking up a PS Vita on February 22nd, or are looking for a primer for the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3, you should give Ryu Hayabusa’s first modern adventure a look.

#ninjagaiden Details about Ninja Gaiden 3's Collector's Edition came through a whole back but Tecmo's finally seen fit to show everyone what it looks like. As mentioned before, you'll get a two-figure Duel of the Masked set and a downloadable demo from Dead or Alive 5, the upcoming entry in Tecmo's fighting game series. There's a soundtrack CD and art book in there, too. More »

There probably isn't a person alive who hasn't, at some point in their life, enjoyed the sight of a ninja flipping out and killing a bunch of dudes. It's universal, like how everyone enjoys warm blankets or shooting firearms. There's a special kind of person, however, that also has an affinity for extreme, debilitating punishment, which is why Ninja Gaiden 3 exists.

NG3's collector's edition, which we first caught wind of last December, includes the game, an art book, a soundtrack, a figure set of Ryu Hayabusa and an eventual murder victim, as well as a download voucher for a four-character demo of Dead of Alive 5. Non-collector's edition pre-orders placed at Gamestop and Amazon will include a code for a two-character demo of DOA5, with Gamestop's demo including Hayabusa and Hitomi, and Amazon's featuring Ayane and Hayate (the four-character version includes both Amazon and GameStop's characters).

The collector's edition will be available exclusively at Gamestop, indicating that Tecmo Koei truly understands the unique relationship it has with its players.

#ninjagaiden Ultra-violent. Fetishtically obsessed with gore. Single-player. These are the words that we've associated with Team Ninja's modern Ninja Gaiden games. But, the upcoming three-quel will change all of that. This trailer gives a long, bloody look at the competitive multiplayer component for Ryu Hayabusa's latest outing. Ninjas of all colors will be able to slash at each other when Ninja Gaiden 3 hits later this year. More »

Here's a video montage of Ninja Gaiden 3's multiplayer mode, uploaded to YouTube by G4. As someone who's played it, I can say this video sums up my experience pretty well. I stabbed dudes; dudes stabbed me; occasionally I stabbed myself.

Sometimes honor is more important than breathing.
