Q: This is our latest creation, James. It's called a "game console."

007: I see, and what does it do?

Q: It plays video games. This one has been outfitted exclusively with a demo for GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. It's based on your infamous mission.

007: Oh! I'm going to grab Moneypenny for a game of "slappers only."

Q: Just so we're clear, James, this isn't that Goldeneye.

007: Well, don't tell Moneypenny that. It will ruin my innuendo.

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. In the eyes of many, the original GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 stands out as much more than a mere game. GoldenEye is a legend with a legacy all its own; one that cannot be substituted or replicated. Of course, that didn't stop Activision from making the attempt in 2010 with a brand new game with the familiar moniker of GoldenEye 007 for the Wii.

Mercifully, the publisher made the very wise (and legally mandated) decision to carry the franchise forward in name only. Rather than creating a direct remake of the 1997 classic, they crafted an entirely new experience that was surprisingly original while still feeling classically GoldenEye. The new game featured much of the style of the original while reimagining the story and characters and events in the modern day.

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is the latest attempt to fill in the N64 classic's sizable tuxedo -- this time in high definition. Unfortunately, while Reloaded fits into the right suit, it seems that it's gotten a bit snug.

A secret agent rarely has any influence over the difficulty of his or her missions, but Goldeneye 007: Reloaded's MI-6 mode gives its kill-licensed professionals that very courtesy. Check out the game's highly customizable missions in the developer walkthrough posted above.

Gamers who had the fortune of experiencing the Nintendo 64 era firsthand no doubt harbor fond memories of staying up until ungodly hours shooting their friends in the face in GoldenEye 007. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 repackages last year's Wii remake of the classic shooter, but with the addition of upgraded graphics and extra play modes. The results make for a rather addictive experience...

But, there's more than just a campaign and multiplayer on the disc. This new video introduces the game's Mi6 missions, separate chunks of gameplay that task players to complete different objectives with a suite of different modifiers. Goldeneye 007: Reloaded
nods to our nostalgia but with better graphics and smoother action sequences in a setting we all played and loved. For precisely this reason, Activision and Eurocom decided to put dubstep in the latest Reloaded trailer. Oh, sorry -- we meant, "For no reason whatsoever." Common mistake.

This does make us wonder what the reception would have been to the above video had it released in 1997. Probably a barrage of praise for its industry-shattering graphics, and a lot of muttering about unnecessarily synthesized bass lines and kids these days.

#goldeneye It's going to be a little while yet before we get to Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's iconic secret agent on the big screen. The fact that he'll be reprising the role in Activision's new Goldeneye game is as good a reason as any to pick up the modern take on a FPS classic. The trailer above gives a glimpse of Craig's craggy features, as well as a run-through of various environments from the game. You'll also get a gander at what classic henchmen Jaws and Chop Chop look like in all their visually upgraded glory. Get ready to lay your goldeneye and goldfingers on the spy shooter next week. Paintball mode in GoldenEye 007 had to be earned. On Wii, it was unlocked by default. Now, it's a pre-order exclusive.

Turns out the Internet’s rabid paranoia was right on this time around.

When Activision issued detailing pre-order incentives for GoldenEye 007: Reloaded this week, it mentioned GameStop pre-orders would have a code unlock paintball mode, a classic visual "cheat" from the original. The fear was no one else would have access to paintball mode, but Activision dismissed those fears, telling me it was a standard in-game unlockable.

"If you don’t pre-order the game from GameStop you’ll still be able to play the Paintball mode, but you’ll need to unlock it by progressing through the game," said an Activision representative to me on Tuesday.

As fun as GoldenEye's single player was, it was multiplayer where the hundreds of hours went.

All good, right? Wrong. Activision sent me a note earlier today with a rather unfortunate correction: paintball mode actually is exclusive to GameStop. You will not be able to unlock it any other way.

“For online multiplayer, paintball is exclusive to Gamestop consumers, you can’t get it without an unlock code,” said the rep. “It’s still available as an offline mode for Mi6 Ops missions.”

Okay, fine. Maybe Activision’s simply planning to roll this out as downloadable content, as has been standard practice this generation.

“All DLC is TBA [to be announced], nothing is confirmed yet,” said the rep.

If you're playing online and the host has paintball turned on, you'll see it, too...which means it's on the disc.

Sigh.

I realize moaning about a simple paintball variant is a weird thing to get hung up on, but hell, paintball was one of my favorite modes from GoldenEye 007. Unlocking paintball wasn’t easy, either; it required beating the Dam stage on Secret Agent in two minutes and 40 seconds. This was a satisfying achievement before Microsoft attached scores to such things. My friend group would sit around the TV for hours, playing each level over and over again, in hopes of shaving a few seconds off our time.

We never did unlock Invincibility.

But when we finally unlocked paintball, we’d earned the right to play paintball--and damn it felt good. So while anyone who picked up GoldenEye 007: Reloaded through GameStop could optionally unlock the mode early, everyone else would still have the ability to flip on paintball the old fashioned way: earning it.

In light of Warner Bros.’ decision to lock Catwoman behind an Online Pass, despite heavily promoting her involvement until the week before the game’s release, it’s not hard to feel like things have gotten wildly out of control. Publishers, where the heck is the line here? Players, maybe we need to start drawing it. For me, apparently, it's blatantly taking advantage of my nostalgia.

The situation reminds me of an image I found on Reddit, a sentiment that probably rings true with some of you:

There are reasons this has changed, though.

The relationship between players and marketing has evolved, becoming more personal--witness the rise of the community manager. It’s about “brand engagement” today, with companies obsessing over the number of retweets, likes, and shares across social networks. Many fans are completely okay with this. It works for some fans, and doesn’t for others.

At some point, though, when has everyone lost sight about, you know, the game?

That’s what rubs me wrong about this. You wouldn’t include paintball mode in a remix of GoldenEye 007 unless you were intentionally strumming the strings of my own memories, but by locking it behind a retailer purchasing incentive, it insultingly misses the point. You know what's worse? Paintball was unlocked by default in the Wii version from last year. Default.

Perhaps it’s telling that Activision told me one thing on Tuesday and another thing on Thursday--even the publishers we're upset at aren’t sure what’s going on or what to do. Activision had it right the first time, though, and it still has time to fix it.

Paintball mode can be flipped on in both single and multiplayer. One of my favorites.

When Activision issued a press release about pre-order incentives for the upcoming GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, my eyebrows raised a bit. Like most games these days, it would come with pre-order incentives.

Specifically, GameStop's pre-order incentive would be the game's infamous paintball mode, a cherished option (especially in multiplayer) from the original game. The idea that players would be forced to purchase from a specific retailer to tap into their nostalgia sounded suspect.

This was the confusing quote in question:

Starting today, fans can pre-order GoldenEye 007: Reloaded at GameStop to receive a unique exclusive code to unlock the Paintball Mode Modifier in Split-screen and Online private multiplayer matches. This fan-favorite modifier causes bullets to leave behind paint splats on walls and surfaces all across the map. Additionally, they'll receive early access into the Classic Conflict Mode in Online public and private multiplayer modes.

Fortunately, everything's in the clear. These pre-order incentives simply unlock modes early.

"If you don’t pre-order the game from GameStop you’ll still be able to play the Paintball mode, but you’ll need to unlock it by progressing through the game," said an Activision representative to me today.

That should apply to the other pre-order incentives, as well.

It almost feels better this way, anyway. Paintball wasn't a freebie in GoldenEye, remember?

Complete Dam on Secret Agent in 2:40 or less.

Getting that one was simple. I don't think my friends and I ever unlocked Invinsibility, which required this:

Complete Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05 or less.

Just thinking about that one's giving me nightmares again.

Is it advisable to revisit a classic game more than once? If you're so committed to GoldenEye 007: Reloaded that you're willing to drop some cash early, you've got several pre-order bonuses to choose from. Three major retailers have their own exclusives, which grant early access to some different game modes and a custom weapon skin.

A pre-order at GameStop unlocks Paintball mode for local split-screen and online private multiplayer matches -- fans of the original GoldenEye 007 on the N64 likely remember this as one of the easier unlockables in that game. A GameStop pre-order also ensures "early access into the Classic Conflict Mode" for online public and private matches.

Amazon's pre-order bonus is pretty basic (a black Moonraker laser rifle skin), and Best Buy grants early access to Tag and Invisibility modes for local split-screen and private online matches. Tag is a version of the school yard classic where a tagged player is incapable of murdering opponents unless they run up and tag somebody else, while Invisibility mode simply makes everyone invisible.

You can pre-order through these three retailers starting today. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded launches on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 1.

Beyond looking good in a tuxedo, an MI-6 agent must be skilled in many other areas. The MI-6 mode in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded will test each operative in a variety of ways: defense, stealth and martini preparation -- well, okay, not that last one.

Here we go again. It was almost a certainty last year that we'd see the version of GoldenEye 007 released for the Wii eventually brought out to the HD consoles, but it's fair to say that Activision surprised everyone with the reveal of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, being released this fall as a full retail title.

So yes, the odds are that we'll all be playing through GoldenEye (first created by Rare for the Nintendo 64 fourteen years ago, and reimagined by Eurocom for the Wii release last year) yet again. This new version has the modern story tweaks, the addition of Daniel Craig, and all of the other reimaginings from the Wii, but Eurocom is aiming for even more, adding in a new set of modes called MI-6 Ops, as well as co-op and full competitive multiplayer. If Call of Duty had a baby with Rare's classic, this is what would crawl out.

It seems that those leaked screens for another Activision-published GoldenEye project were legit, or at very least had the name of the forthcoming release right. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is apparently an HD port of last year's Wii game, coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall from Eurocom. Activision announced the game this morning via press release, which describes the game as having "the legendary story campaign," "brand new Mi6 Ops Missions" (which are new, objective-based levels), and a revamped multiplayer component.

Rather than a simple up-scaling of the Wii game, Reloaded is said to be "built on a brand new engine" and run at 60 frames per second. But beyond the HD update and Mi6 missions, it seems that the game is a repeat of last year's Wii shooter -- you can even play it with the PlayStation Move, should you prefer a more Wii-like experience. And while we were fans of the Wii title, it's perhaps best not to get too jazzed about the second release of a reimagining of a game we played on Nintendo 64 in 1997.
