For the first time since the GameCube, Nintendo produced the Wii U, which performs somewhat comparable to its contemporaries, as opposed to the Wii, which didn't have HD while the 360/PS3 have it. So I got my Wii U back in April 2014, and it's been great to have around. One thing that people complained about when the system came out was Wii mode. They complained that by emulating the Wii completely in Wii Mode, the console couldn't improve its play of Wii Games (upscaling the graphics, for example). And rightly so, because emulation is supposed to allow performance like unto the target system (in this case, the Wii.) So this afternoon, I was playing Xenoblade Chronicles, which I keep checking out from the library because I'm in no financial shape to get a copy just yet. Great game. And sometimes, the game lags if too many enemies are on the screen, and too much goes on at once. So it's evident that that game pushes the Wii's hardware to the max, despite having a low resolution for a Wii game. Matter of fact, I think that the whole of Xenoblade could have been achieved on the Gamecube's hardware. So back to my situation, I got wiped out a couple of times, and I decided that I had to stop for the day. I saved, tried to return to the Wii Menu, but after I confirmed, the screen stayed black. For minutes. My Wii remote plus wouldn't respond, and holding the POWER button did nothing to help, so I had to force the Wii U off by unplugging it.

If you use your Wii U to play all of your Wii games, you probably agree with me when I say that Nintendo needs to get this whole Wii-compatibility thing sorted out. The whole console could use some work, but for the sake of this post, I'm focusing on the Wii Mode aspect. Here's what I would change:

1. Gamecube controllers. Anyone who's serious about Smash Bros. Brawl would use a Gamecube controller. Let's make the Gamecube controller adapter work in Wii mode!

2. Wii U Gamepad/Wii U Pro controllers. I've heard the idea of having the Gamepad simulate a Classic Controller. This is a great idea, and it would especially be a boon to people like me who like to use the Gamepad to play games and keep the TV off while people are sleeping at home. In addition, the Wii U Pro Controllers could be used to simulate a Classic Controller as well. Going back to the Smash Bros. Brawl scenario this would be a good feature for those who don't like the Classic controller.

3. Wii Shop Channel: make it run in the background! When I download software, do I want to watch Mario collect coins for 8 minutes while my Club Nintendo gift downloads? NO!

What would you change? Have you had any issues with lag or with specific Wii games played on Wii U? Comment below.

Searched "Wii lag" in Google images...I LOVE this ^ lol

Super-Claus
okay so the game isnt lagging because the wii u can't run it, that'd be *crag*ing ridiculous. the way "wii mode" works is it locks the console down to emulate the wii itself, and doesnt allowed it to use higher grade hardware than what would have been available to the original wii, probably to avoid errors in certain games and soft-modding loopholes. Also I can contest to the fact that the system crashing isn't wii mode itself but xenoblade. that happened a lot on my original wii when playing xenoblade, that game is hard as shit on the system's OS (I'm pretty sure it has to reboot the OS in the background into a low consumption mode). Honestly having wii games run in an emulator is a debatable choice itself. On the one hand i'd rather not hamper the Wii U's honestly decent OS just to make it reverse compatible with Wii functionality, but on the other hand I have to wonder why nintendo took the easy route in shoving it all into an emulator rather than putting in a bit more work just to differentiate the old wii and the new wii U data. I certainly wouldn't have minded if they had combined the old and new shops. Really I like the Wii U a lot as it is and since I soft-modded and kept my old wii I never have a reason to use Wii mode anyways.

For me in fifth grade it was Club Penguin and Stick Arena. Club Penguin is all about typing a cuss word and getting banned for 24 hours, and in Stick Arena you killed stick figure players. Good times.

I Got my first and last code for the Deluxe Digital Promotion a few weeks ago. After this, I pondered what I was possibly going to spend it towards. I decided on Meme Run, a brand-new Wii U exclusive. I love rage comics and memes, so I bought it because it seemed like a good game.

Meme Run is an infinite-running platform game where the player controlls a dancing troll face stick figure whose mouth is closed (probably due to copyright reasons??) to jump and slide. Across the emoticon-studded terrain. The only danger here is either a pitfall or getting dragged off the screen by the scrolling crushing you against a wall. You gain Swag points as you go on, and you can pick up an Illuminati badge to increase youe score multiplier. As you run, memes and stuff appear on screen. You only have one life; death is final.

Is Meme Run a good game? Reviewers criticize it harshly. The Question is: why would someone go and create a dumb Wii U game about a running troll who works for the Illuminati? Contrariwise, I find it a blessing. While I didn't expect it to be nearly as arcade-like for the price of $5, it still provides fodder for a good mini-game to kill time with. It's the Flappy Bird of console gaming! If you're short on cash for games, though, it's best to sit this one out.

It's been well over a year since the game's website has been updated. Recently, an update occurred though. This update included system requirements for the Windows, OS X, and Linux versions of the game, brand-new screenshots and music, as well as clay models of the Chosen Four. The blog page states:

Travis's sprite throughout the project

"What isn’t great, despite how much the quality has increased, is how much further behind schedule we’ve become than we realized. Yet, as Mother fans, we will only be satisfied with the highest quality of work. That has led us here. Today, we’re announcing that Mother 4 will be released in 2015. In a few weeks, we’ll post a specific release day....In the meantime, we’ll be posting a new video next month of some of the gameplay

I was PISSED to find this out! I'm subscribed to the mailing list, so they will send me my copy of the game before it releases to the "general public" meaning anyone with a computer and internet. When this happens, a download page will be posted on the site. It also means that I, a proud EarthBound lover for 2 years, will be one of the first people to play! The upside to this is: I'm getting a new laptop for Christmas, and MOTHER 4 will be a great addition to my gaming library, so I'll install it once I actually have a new computer, since my laptop probably can't and won't run it at this point.

What are your thoughts on the project thus far?

Mega-Sandy
I want mother 4 to be actually announced and make their project go down

I like how their lead programmer Dave went from using C++ and SDL to C# and XNA which is as dead as a dormouse. I also find it really amusing this change happened after 5 years of work on the old engine and less than a year before release. Like seriously, what the *crag* are they doing?

It was two weeks ago either yesterday or today that I got banned. I read that first bans usually last two weeks, the next level is a "permanent" six-month ban, and then a console ban. Today, though, I checked Miiverse a couple times, and my ban still hasn't expired. Are you freaking kidding me. Does that mean I'm banned for six months!??? that doesn't make sense, that they would do something like that for my initial ban. Meaning, I'll behave when I the ban expires.

During my AP History class on Friday, my laptop shut down without warning while charging. Later at home, it seemed to run fine, but a while after that, it shut down again. I was pissed. So I decided for the night to use my Wii U for my web-browsing needs. Yesterday, though, I found that after about ten minutes of running, my laptop would shut down again. Then I had to wait about half an hour and try again.

When I'm gaming, I run Razer Game Booster. Whenever I switch it on, it puts the computer on its own power plan. However, I found that when Game Booster switches to Normal Mode, the battery plan isn't changing back the way it should. So I manually switched it back to Power Saver (my preference) and the problem disappeared. For now. I won't be using it anytime soon, my SNES emulator runs fine without it and I'm playing through Terranigma.

It's been 5 months just about since I got my Wii U. I like the console and the collection of games is growing steadily. My brother bought us Nintendo Land last night, and I like it for the most part. During the week, my console installed the latest system update which rearranged the home menu and made folders possible. However, there are still quite a few things that could change.

1. The TV remote needs more buttons. It would be nice if it had a mute button.

2. The Internet Browser needs work. Remember how the Internet Channel on the Wii had like Flash Lite 3? It grew outdated for the most part, but the Wii U browser has no flash player. That doesn't come as a shock to owners, but it annoys me how I can't watch video on sites like Dailymotion and Filehoot. The least Nintendo can do is make appropriate plugins like flash downloadable. It would be great if third-party developers came up with a browser for the Wii U that would have all that. It would run as an app, of course (probably spawning a Miiverse community to go along with it), but it would be a treat.

3. I checked out MK8 from the library once. My Wii U installed some update, and ever since then, it notifies me every time I open the home menu. Nintendo needs to make a way for this to be turned off.

4. Custom wallpapers/themes for the Wii U menu

5. Miiverse's drawing space needs to be bigger.

6. BRING BACK THE PHOTO CHANNEL!

Gold Prognosticus
I think the update notifications go away if you launch the game in question.

True, the Wii U has the best console web browser, but it is, again, a game console, and it isn't as powerful as PC/Mac browsers. It needs more features, or, if a 3rd party browser came out, I would enjoy that.

"There are two types of people in this world. Those of us who have played Earthbound, and the most unlucky people on Earth."

While I don't completely agree with that statement, I am being somewhat a participant on the Year of EarthBound. It began on September 13, and shall continue well into 2015. We're celebrating EarthBound and the MOTHER series.

To participate, you need to follow Year of EB's user, via the link above. Then you can start posting to the EarthBound and Super Smash Bros. communities about EarthBound. Be sure to tag them #YearOfEB!

EarthBound should be on the 3DS's virtual console service. I don't have a 3DS at this time, but if I did, I would probably get it if I could do so for free, having the Wii U Version already.

Back when I was in seventh grade, some Sophomores and Juniors told me that I should never go on Newgrounds.com because flash entertainment sucks. That could not be further from the truth. Newgrounds has some great games on it, and last Sunday, I hit the Jackpot with Phoenotopia.

I was on the Games page looking for a good game, and the big banner advertising, or "shilling" as Fortran has come to call it, for the game caught my eye. "Challenge accepted," I said to my computer. With the wrong operating system and a broken computer in tow, I clicked on it.

You play as Gale, some pink-haired girl in a village. The inhabitants get captured while you round up kids in the forest, and your job is to be a good silent protagonist and figure out what happened.

The game has native Xbox 360 controller compatibility. But I'm using a Gamecube controller with a Mayflash GC controller adapter. It wouldn't detect my controller. Enter JoyToKey. I got started, and I was pissed because you can't run very fast, and the combat system is awk. But I got used to it, and the game was very enjoyable.

It's an action-RPG/Platform game, with a thorough item system, sidequests, and all that that we look for in console-quality games. When I beat the game, I'm going to review it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I won't spoil a bunch of the details right here.....go play it yourself.

This past March, I downloaded Terranigma, per recommendation by Scottishduck17, a favorite Let's Player of mine who is retiring that career soon. I loved it. It's an action RPG. I beat the game back in April. I beat Soul Blazer two months ago. And today, I beat Illusion of Gaia.  Now, under my old account (which I can't access anymore because my Windows Live ID got hacked and I don't have a phone to reactivate it with) I made a post about how great it was. But some guy commented about loving Terraria. Then I explained to him that Terraria is a two dimentional Minecraftia while Terranigma is an SNES action-RPG.  But he made some herp-derp about how "I know but I" he just said that he meant Terraria. Oh, well. That's one game he'll miss out on. The games have their own standalone stories quite satisfactorily, like the MOTHER games, but they do have references to events and people in the series's other games.

So just what is the series? Soul Blazer is an action-RPG created by Quintet (published by Enix and Nintendo) with mediocre sprites, sound effects, and to some extent, music, but fairly good gameplay; in fact, easy at times. The enemies aren't that tough usually, but the bosses sure are. "Monster Lairs" spawn enemies out of the ground, and the player needs to attack them until they die. Unfortunately, it gets monotonous sometimes when the player can spam the monster lair as the enemies keep coming out. You only have two basic attacks (or to put it more bluntly, one attack that repeats over and over again a la Minecraft and has too much knockback, and one somewhat passive, crappy ability that passes for an attack.), making attacking one enemy constantly a pain unless you have a wall nearby You must advance through six worlds, resurrect people and animals, collecting "souls" to give you new abilities: Soul of Magician, Soul of Light, Soul of Shield, Soul of Detection, Soul of Reality. Apparently the Soul of Detection is unrequired to beat the game because quite frankly, I never found it. You also collect enchanted weapons, magical abilities, armors, and more. The item system is weird because you may only hold one of each type of item at any one time. This gets annoying, as having multiple Medical Herbs would be very helpful. You must defeat Deathtoll, the evil king. Like EarthBound, you can name your character.

Illusion of Gaia is the indirect sequel to Soul Blazer. The combat system showed slight improvement over Soul Blazer, although combo attacks haven't been introduced quite yet. Will, an average boy, realizes he has telekinesis. He gets drafted by Gaia to find the six statues, rescue his father, and save the world from a demon comet. On the way, Will must transform into three different forms. Standard, or "Will" is as mediocre as Blazer was near the beginning of the game, until he learns some sweet Dark Powers down the line. Freedan, the Dark Night, has a bigger sword (which has longer range, too) as opposed to Will's little stick-thing, has higher attack power, and is all-around the best character for combat situations, as his Dark Friar attack is useful for out-of-range enemies and switches. Shadow is the Ultimate Dark Warrior. He is introduced nigh the end of the game. He is made of pure starlight and has much higher attack power, making Freedan almost obsolete. He looks like Chaos from Sonic Adventure...hmm...He has no long-range attacks, but his shielding move covers his entire body rather than just the front of him. He also uses the phoenix magic in the final boss. All playable characters share Telekinesis, particularly used for certain objects in-game, as well as the useless dark gems that enemies drop. Exp is removed from the game entirely, rather, players must increase the stats of Will by defeating all enemies in a subdivision of an area, gaining an increase to a stat. The item system is like that of Paper Mario 2: low capacity, but you can hold multiples of an item. Like Soul Blazer, however, you must have an item equipped to use it, though. Will's name cannot be changed. (Sorry Ninten, Ana, and Lloyd!)

Terranigma is hands-down the best game in the series. It has pretty darn good graphics for SNES standards! Ark, a mischievous young adult living in the underworld's only town with civilized life, triggers a prophecy rendering the world inert, and he must resurrect the world by defeating bosses and whatnot. The combat system is five times better: with combo attacks, a spinning midair attack, and more. Magic rings can be used once each, with powerful attacks. Summon Pins can also be used for different needs such as HP recovery, status ailments, or invincibility. Unlike the other two games, Terranigma introduces a money and shop system, where you can buy all sorts of items, weapons, armor, and magic (all categorized separately). Items, weapons, and armor are purchased with gems alone, but for magic rings/summon pins, you need to buy them with a certain amount of "Magirocks" too. The item system finally got its act together: You can hold up to nine of any one item at one time, so inventory space is never a problem. Like Soul Blazer, you can also have more weapons again. The weapons you collect are successively more powerful than each other, but some have enchantments on them. For example, the first weapon, Crystal Spear, recovers your HP over time (only in the Underworld), the RocSpear (8-character limits apply to items, magic, armor, and weapons in this game) can break rocks, but the Sticker has more attack power. You also have Yomi, who acts somewhat like Tippi from Super Paper Mario in many ways (mind you, Francis) but he's much more cocky than Tippi is; following you throughout the entire game. The story is more developed than in the previous two games, and unlike the previous two games, Ark's bae Elle is already with him - Blazer and Will didn't get their girlfriends until mid-to end game!

That was pretty good. i should work for Wikipedia.

Ever since I was in 4th grade I've been using the same Compaq Presario V6700. It came with Vista, but we upgraded it to Windows 7. Then we got an HP Pavilion, which became my brother's, so I got stuck wiht the former. I was never very happy with it's performance. Right now, it's in especially sorry shape. The only games I can play properly are ones that aren't graphically demanding, like freeware games, flash games in the browser, and SNES roms. Those games aren't bad, but it could be better if I had better performance. Now I'm a sophomore with a dying laptop. Thus, I've decided I'm never getting another HP laptop again. Ever. That begs the question: Which laptop should I get for black friday/Christmas/my birthday?

A desktop computer doesn't fit my lifestyle, let me put that out there first. I considered Macs, but they're too expensive and aren't as good for gaming. On the Newgrounds forums, I asked if Windows 8 tablets were good for gaming. If this was the case, one could become my main computer, and I could have USB ports for iPod syncing and stuff. The consolidated answer was: not unless it's the Razer Edge Pro. Here's a pic:

But that thing costs a thousand bucks! No way I (or my family) can afford that!!!! And for another hundred each, you can get the button controller arms (shown) and a keyboard. This thing has 8G RAM, intel core i7 processor.

So then I went to Best Buy.com and looked for some good laptops. The two I'm debating about are:

Dell Inspiron

Toshiba Satelite (as of the time I'm making the post they are both out of stock on bestbuy.com)

What would you guys recommend? I'll list some key features I want:

-At least 4GB RAM

-Windows 8 installed

-Webcam on front

What store could I get it cheapest at, online or otherwise?

Also: could anyone tell me how to make a recovery partition? My hard drive got replaced, and "D:\" was not on the new one, so I need to make a recovery partition on my own, because potentially, I may want to factory reset the computer.

you've only had your old laptop for like 6 months man there's still plenty of use left

I recently had a mishap with my iPod touch (gen 5) case. I got the case for my birthday accompanying the iPod itself which I got, due to me being accident-prone. I always have it in the shower to see incoming notifications, and I plan on bringing it to the waterpark this summer. However, two days ago I had it in the shower, and when I was rinsing it off, blobs of water were IN the case! (Good thing the case is clear - I would not ahve seen the water!) I quickly got out, retrieved my device, and saved it from further damage thusly. Further inspection of the case I sent a warranty claim and a picture to Lifeproof to see if I could get a new one. And guess what? I checked my email, and they're sending a new one to me for free.

And yeah, I looked at Otterbox and whatever, Otter doesn't make cases for iPod 5 that are waterproof so I decided not to think about a new one. If you do have another company in mind that does make such cases that are just as good/better/etc, please let me know.

Yesterday on the EarthBound community, someone asked how to get Mother 1 or 3. I told that person, "get the ROM!" and half an hour or so went by when I got a notification from the Miiverse administration: "Your post contained content related to criminal activity, so it was removed. " Emulation is legal. So some tattletale thought it was a good idea (or maybe Reggie or some other guy was just reading through the community?) to report my post. So I made a follow up post this morning saying, "Hey! I posted here earlier and someone reported my post for "criminal activity" (involving the whole MOTHER franchise) and it got removed! Let's not go tattling on each other in this community!", and it got a piddling two yeahs.

Moral: Don't mention ROMS or emulation on Miiverse!

You can follow me, I'm conqueror17. You can follow but I will NOT accept friend requests! Miiverse makes it very clear that friends are for real life friends only, and I'm sticking to that!

Francis
Miiverse makes it very clear that posting about criminal activity is not allowed, and I'm sticking to that!
Super-Claus
ehhh not technically, its legal under testing and private property manipulation, assuming you arent sharing the altered software with others
so modding and emulating is allowed as long as you dont share the software or raw improvements with others. The emulators themselves will always be outside of the argument as long as they dont include a BIOS file since they are independent software that simply creates certain conditions for any given file type. One could make the argument that supporting certain exclusive file types brings it into the illegal realm, but the contents of file types such as .N64 are usually just modifications of existing files types, dropping it right back into the legal gray realm.
