Red Thread announces VR support, 2015 release for horror game Draugen

Indie studio Red Thread Games announced a release window for Draugen, a first-person survival horror game that will feature support for VR technology like the Oculus Rift.

Red Thread is also working on Dreamfall Chapters, a Kickstarter-funded revival of the classic PC adventure game series The Longest Journey. Red Thread is primarily composed of former staff from The Longest Journey developer Funcom, and was founded by series creator Ragnar Tørnquist.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Tørnquist described the project as "HP Lovecraft meets Dostoyevsky," and "Gone Home meets Amnesia." Kicked off by a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute, Draugen will seek a final round of funding via Kickstarter before it ships for Windows, Mac, Linux, and an undisclosed console platform in 2015.

Todd McFarlane discusses bringing the Rabbids to life via figurines

A portion of a Ubisoft interview with Todd McFarlane...

U: In terms of pure toy creation, Rabbids are kind of like a blank slate. They’re limited in detail. On the other hand, you’re renowned for your eye for detail and points of articulation. How was this a different challenge for you, and how did you approach it?

TM: You’re right. We usually look at stuff and think we have to nail it. We have to get every bolt and every screw and every single groove that you have in a space uniform or the outfits in Assassin’s Creed. They’re pretty elaborate. Our job is to try to capture all of that.

The Rabbids are twofold. That attention to detail still comes into play. They still have to look like the Rabbids in the game and on TV. I can’t just make a quasi-shape and paint it white and call it a Rabbid. That’s not fair. It has to be exactly the right shape. But the selling aspect, obviously, isn’t the detail, because there’s not a lot of it. It’s the fun factor. That was the challenge. We haven’t really gone into a lot of projects where that’s the priority.

Deadlight, Hitman Absolution join gratis Games With Gold in April

Whether you'd prefer to gingerly hop your way through the decrepit ruins of humanity or dispatch targets with the cold, remorseless professionalism of a trained killer, Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion has something for you.

Come April 1, Hitman: Absolution will be available as a free download for all Xbox Live Gold members. Our review awarded Hitman: Absolution 4 of 5 stars, and said that while it has minor flaws, the grim gameplay and glee of assassinating a difficult target overrides any technical issues. Hitman: Absolution will only be available for free until April 16, at which time it will be replaced by Deadlight. This post-apocalyptic platformer, developed by Tequila Works, received 3 of 5 stars in our review. While Jess found certain gameplay elements frustrating, she fell for Deadlight's art design and meticulous world building, and enjoyed the experience overall.

As with all Games With Gold offerings, the only requisite for downloading the above games is an active Xbox Live Gold membership. Full details on how to enroll in Xbox Live Gold can be found on the Xbox website. [Image: Square Enix]

How-do, pardner! I know you’re accustomed to a ton of shootin’, lootin’, rootin’ and/or tootin’ in your wild west games, but rarely do they address the real complexities of frontier life. For instance, where did the fabric needed to sew all those enormous calico dresses come from? Who provided the lumber and fashioned the boards to build the O.K. Corral? How did gunslingers acquire olive oil to daintily dip their sourdough bread into? Finally, those head-scratchin’, long-lingerin’ questions have been answered in the early access wild-west management game 1849 from Somasim. Reach for it, cowboy! Not your gun, your sales ledger!

Don't be on the lookout for a Watch Dogs demo

Over the past few days, Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin has been deluged by anxious fans asking about a potential demo for the open-world adventure - a demo that, Morin claims, is not in development.

"Dude relax, I receive too much tweets," Morin replied to one Twitter user who had repeatedly badgered the developer for an answer. "[There is] no demo planned before release. Sorry for the wait, doing my best," he added. The next day, Morin was asked to explain this lack of a Watch Dogs demo. "Doing Demos take time, the focus is on the game," he tweeted. "You will see more footage before release. Be patient & thanks for your passion."

Watch Dogs is slated for release on May 27. It will debut on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. A Wii U version of Watch Dogs is also in development, but we haven't heard anything on when that version will be released since Ubisoft delayed the game in February. [Image: Ubisoft]

Lanning happy to bring Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty to Wii U, not worried about install base
venturebeat.com posted by GoNintendo Mar 31 2014 19:14 GMT in Nintendo Stuff

Coming from a GamesBeat interview with Lorne Lanning...

We’re self-publishing. With Sony that’s a breeze. With Steam it’s a breeze. With Microsoft it’s not a breeze. With Nintendo, something’s going to happen there shortly. Even on the Wii U, though, how many people did buy it? It’s kind of how we looked at Vita in the Christmas of 2012. We did Stranger HD on Vita, and the publishers were kind of snubbing Vita at the time, because there wasn’t enough installed base to move their dial. We said, yeah, but that small base is pretty passionate. They invested and they want good experiences that are designed to maximize that control scheme. Why don’t we spend a little more time and attention – because we’re small and we can – and a result we took number two in the U.S. and number one in Europe that Christmas on Vita.

That’s not selling millions of units, but the way we’re looking at it, it gets us into a pool of users on a specific device, of which so far we’ve had zero on Nintendo. We’ve had zero brand visibility on Nintendo since day one. We never built for Nintendo. Today, we’re looking at it and we say, “We’ll get over to Wii U. As a business model it might not completely make sense, but we want to get to work on Nintendo, get to self-publishing on Nintendo. Everything’s a new store. Everything’s more shelf space. We’re trying to get the brand across that as widely as possible.

Google partners with Pikachu in Google Maps: Pokémon Challenge

Google wants to hire the very best. Like no one ever was. If you're a Pokémon master and can meet some extreme physical fitness requirements, you might have what it takes to survive the Pokémon Challenge, a fictional Google Maps-based job application that employs an augmented reality interface. The latest version of Google Maps for smartphones now includes a built-in Pokedex, so even those who aren't seeking employment with Google can capture nearby critters.

Google is fond of video game-themed April Fools' jokes, having previously launched a faux 8-bit version of Google Maps in 2012. This year's prank is such a simple and engaging concept that you have to wonder why Nintendo hasn't attempted something similar -- and no, the stripped-down Pokémon Dream Radar doesn't count. Forcing players to scale real-world cliffs in order to capture rare Pokémon dovetails nicely with Nintendo's recently announced shift into the health sector, too. Get on it, Nintendo!
