Super Stickman Golf creators join the Flappy flock with Flappy Golf

Hoping that two wildly addictive tastes go great together, mobile developer Noodlecake Studios has debuted Flappy Golf, an iOS game that combines the deceptively simple Super Stickman Golf with mobile hit Flappy Bird.

Flappy Golf borrows physics, basic gameplay rules and courses from Super Stickman Golf 2, but instead of carefully aiming a shot, players control a flapping bird that must languidly wing its way toward the hole. The goal is to make it through the labyrinthine courses using as few flaps as possible. That may seem overly simplistic, but Flappy Golf features 30 courses of nine holes each, and like Super Stickman Golf, the courses grow increasingly complex and bizarre, offering new challenges with each round.

Best of all, Flappy Golf is available as a free download on the iTunes App Store. There are no microtransactions to be found in the mobile mashup, but players will occasionally see in-game advertisements. [Image: Noodlecake Studios]
Ace Attorney creator talks voice work and casting, Kamiya wanted to be involved

Coming from an ONM interview with series creator Shu Takumi...

"Using professional voice actors was a lot less common back in 2000, when we were developing the original Japanese GBA version of the first game. For that title, all the team members recorded all the different samples needed and the best sounding ones were chosen for each character. This must sound like it would have taken a long time, but there were just seven people on that team!

I must admit I used my director's privilege and influence to the full in order to cast myself as the Japanese Phoenix Wright. Edgeworth was voiced by a graphic designer who had just joined the company and Von Karma was our music composer. For the English version some years later, members of the localisation team provided the voices, although, to be frank, I wanted to do Phoenix in English as well!

Hideki Kamiya joined the company at roughly the same time and our desks were near each other, too, so ever since the second Ace Attorney title he'd been pestering me to let him do one of the voices. I eventually relented and offered him the part of Godot. In the recording studio, I explained the character to him as a hard-boiled kind of guy and he took that on board and decided to adapt the dialogue, shouting out, "Objection, baby!" It was a good take, but the in-game graphic just says, "Objection," so we couldn't use it.

His talent for creating great action games. It's interesting that he says he'd like my scenario writing ability, as I get the feeling that he wouldn't have much need to write murder mysteries and tricky alibis set in the worlds of Dante and Bayonetta. Although I do wonder what kind of games we'd both make once we'd completed this transfer of talents. Don't you?"

Plague Inc: Evolved, an unfinished but solid version of which is out on Steam Early Access now, is a strategy game about wiping out humanity.

At first I felt terrible, as the red dots denoting infection spread across the United Kingdom, into France, across the sea to Norway, and then the deaths began to roll in.

Then I grew annoyed at Iceland’s panicked closing of its airports. I frowned as my bacterial infection withered in the African heat.

Then I smiled as migrating birds carried the plague to the other side of the world, as the lights gradually went out in Canada, as Germany’s infrastructure collapsed in the wake of the mounting fatalities, and as China’s extinction dealt a savage blow to global research for a cure. … [visit site to read more]

Indie dev Radiangames faces multiplatform delisting over trademark dispute

Indie developer Radiangames (Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville) has been forced to remove one of its games from multiple online storefronts in the wake of a recent trademark dispute from an online games publisher.

The disputed title is Crossfire, a retro-styled shoot-'em-up originally released for the Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) service in 2010. Following the release of an XBLIG sequel, the series later made its way to PC and iOS devices under the name Super Crossfire.

Developer Luke Schneider researched the title before releasing his game, but didn't notice that online games publisher G4Box launched the similarly-titled free-to-play military FPS Cross Fire for PC platforms in 2009. After recently announcing Cross Fire 2, G4Box filed a trademark dispute against Schneider's game, resulting in its upcoming removal from all available platforms.

"[Super Crossfire] barely makes any money these days, and I'm not spending thousands of dollars to try to fight the issue when I just want to make games," Schneider explains. "I can't say too many bad things about someone who's enforcing the trademark according to the law, though I do think it's completely obvious Super Crossfire is not an attempt in any way to infringe on their trademark, and I also don't think there's any confusion over the two games (arcade shooter vs. online F2P FPS)."

Schneider's game has already been removed from iTunes, and will be delisted from Desura, GamersGate, and XBLIG this Friday. Schneider has considered renaming the game for a future PC re-release, and is currently polling fans for suggestions.

Nintendo on evolving Animal Crossing, adding real-life elements, bringing the series back to consoles
usgamer.net posted by GoNintendo Mar 26 2014 18:02 GMT in Nintendo Stuff

Coming from a USGamer interview with Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi...

"With [Nintendo's] products, it’s only when people play them and enjoy them that the product actually has value. We constantly have to create something new and provide something new. When we put out a product, at that time, it’s the best thing we can offer. But as time passes, we look back and realize that it’s not going to work now. We’re in a different environment. The world outside is a different place. We have to constantly think about what we can create that’s new and refreshing for people who play. That’s the constant sense of pressure that I feel."

Coming from ACNL director Aya Kyogoku...

"As the series grows, time passes outside. Technology changes. The way players feel and think, their perspective about gaming changes. As a franchise, to stay relevant, we have to evolve along with that change. For example, that beautiful town ordinance may reduce some of the stress the game could cause. Things like that, we have to take them into consideration and constantly think about them and adjust to how the world has changed around us."

Coming from Katsuya Eguchi...

"Starting with the Nintendo 64, the communication aspect of Animal Crossing back then was about communicating with your family, or your friends that come over, and you would play after you go home. It would be communication with people you actually share a physical space with. As technology becomes more advanced, it expands the scope of what we can do. With the introduction of memory cards on the GameCube or the wireless Internet connection now, the scope of who you can reach out to and who you can communicate with has expanded.

In real life, back in the day, people would gather physically to talk about their lives – here’s what’s been going on, here’s what’s happening around the world. Now, with the introduction of the internet, that’s done on a global scale, and very quickly. I feel like, as Nintendo’s hardware takes in those new technologies like the wireless internet connection, we’re able to be in sync and move in parallel with how the world is moving forward. I feel like the introduction of technology into our games is a reflection of how we’re moving in parallel with the rest of the world.

I’d also like to include aspects of our real lives and the real world in the games that we create. Within that process, the thing that hasn’t changed is the desire to express oneself, to show that expression to others, and to find out what others are feeling, what others are going through, what others are doing. With the introduction of new technology, that scope is widening. We’re able to widen that scope in terms of our games that we create at Nintendo.

I think that the current style, the way Animal Crossing is set up, is definitely catering toward a portable system, but the core concept, the world of Animal Crossing and the concepts involved in it, can be brought to a console just as easily. If we were to make another Animal Crossing for a new console, the thing I would focus on would be how to fully utilize the features of that console, and how to integrate that into the concept and the world of Animal Crossing, to create a new way of playing Animal Crossing."

Football Manager Classic 2014 makes its European Vita debut on April 11

Developer Sports Interactive and publisher Sega have announced a release date for the Vita incarnation of Football Manager Classic 2014: April 11.

The game, which is described as a "fully-featured handheld version of Football Manager Classic," brings a more streamlined approach to the simulation aspects of Football Manager. Instead of spending countless hours poring over every minute detail of your squad, Football Manager Classic instead boils down the fan-favorite simulation formula to its bare essentials. This allows players to work their way through a lengthy managerial career without dedicating months of their otherwise busy lives to sitting in front of a computer.

This Vita incarnation of the game is the first mobile version of Football Manager Classic to utilize the same 3D Match Engine found in its PC counterpart. As a result, players are able to start a game on the PC, transfer save data to the Vita, then continue their career on the go.

Sega has yet to establish a price point for the Vita version of Football Manager Classic 2014, but it does note that come April 11, the game will be available in both retail and digital incarnations. [Image: Sega]
