Coming from a Game Informer interview with Nintendo's Hiromasa Shikata...

GI: "We found Majora's Mask and another subtle reference to Link's Nintendo 64 adventure in Ravio's Journal. Are there any other Majora's Mask references that we missed?"

Shikata: "[Having Majora's Mask in Link's house] was a special request from Aonuma's production team. Now why would they ask us to do that?"

Big change to Background Tiles. You now can have up to 10 Tile Sets, with up to 36 tile frames in each for use in your own rooms and levels. Tile Set selection has moved down into the items inventory area. The frames area on the right now scrolls to save space. There are some new buttons:

COPY a tile or item frame
PASTE to reuse it, which should save you some work.
CLEAR will erase a frame, and if you have a color selected it will fill the frame with that color.

NOTE: only ONE tile set can be used in the overworld and other public areas. Technically you can use more, but the game will only render one of them.  (Well, actually you can use a different set for front and back layers) This is to keep the public areas from slowing down due to too many layers. The overworld might look a little messy until people go in and fix their areas and consolidate things into one set.

for custom items/tiles, use the  tool to copy placed colours, like an eye dropper. works for colours placed outside the canvas too so you can have a pallete.

you all probably already knew this and I'm just retarded.

Earlier this evening at the inaugural Buzzfeed Brews event in New York City, HBO CEO Richard Plepler announced that HBO and PlayStation have partnered to offer the popular HBO GO app − first on PlayStation 3, with PlayStation 4 to follow.

With the HBO GO app on your PlayStation system and an HBO subscription via your cable or satellite provider, you’ll have unlimited, on-demand access to your favorite HBO shows, like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and True Detective. HBO GO offers every episode of every season of the network’s best shows. You can also enjoy hit movies, sports, documentaries, and comedy specials, as well as special behind-the-scenes extras.

As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I can’t wait to watch the show using my PS3. Speaking of which, click here to watch the season 4 trailer that premiered earlier this week, in case you missed it.

Keep checking back here for more updates on when the HBO GO app will be available to download on PS3 and PS4.

Nintendo has obtained the entire patent portfolio of exergaming company InterAction Laboratories (a.k.a. IA Labs) following an unsuccessful 2010 lawsuit alleging that Nintendo's Wii and its peripherals infringed on IA's patents.

A trial court ruled in favor of Nintendo in 2012, ordering IA Labs to pay Nintendo's legal defense fees as a result. IA Labs lost a subsequent appeal last year, leading to a sheriff's sale of its assets when the company was unable to reimburse Nintendo's court costs. Nintendo then purchased IA Labs' remaining assets and patent portfolio during the sale, closing off the potential for further claims and lawsuits.

While Nintendo won this particular patent battle, a federal judge recently ruled in favor of Tomita Technologies International in a lawsuit over Nintendo's patent-infringing use of its glasses-free 3D technology. Nintendo was ordered to pay a percentage of revenue earned from 3DS hardware sales to Tomita as a result of the suit.

The beta period for Steam Family Options, which includes games sharing, has come to a close. Now all Steam users can start sharing their Steam libraries and setting user permissions for their children's accounts.

Steam Family Options allows users to control access to content on Steam for their young ones, but more importantly it allows them to share their games with up to ten others. Each user can earn their own achievements and save their own progress, though only one user in the "family" can access that particular Steam library at once, with priority always being given to the owner.

Managing which games are in your Family Library is fairly straightforward: Boot up Steam, go into your library, right-click the game you want to share and then click "Add to / Remove from Family Games." You can manage your Family Options under the Settings tab.

There's a Steam Family Options group on Steam you can join if you're looking for more info or need to troubleshoot. In order to start using Steam Family Options, you'll need to update your Steam client. After that, feel free to start sharing all those games you snatched up in the Steam Holiday Sale.

At 9:30 on the first morning of CES in Las Vegas, Tuan Nguyen walked into the Engadget media trailer carrying two cardboard boxes, each large enough to hold an adult cat. He placed the boxes on a table in a back room and asked me for something to cut through the tape holding them closed. He eventually used his keys. Nguyen unloaded one package, pulling grey foam from the edges of a white rectangle with the Steam logo imprinted on its top, a console just smaller than an Xbox One.

Nguyen started talking about the box - iBuyPower's SBX, a Steam Machine slated to hit retail this year for $500. He told stories about designing the box as a console, working with Valve and how hard it was to keep the budget down. He said iBuyPower was planning to announce a second Steam Machine paired with Oculus Rift that night, but to be honest, the Oculus team was a little behind schedule and the VR headset wasn't ready for console integration. He probably said too much.

At 11 that morning, I had an appointment to see Digital Storm's Steam Machine, the Bolt 2, a Windows-SteamOS hybrid that started at $1,900. The meeting was in Trump Tower, in a room on the 48th floor. The Trump lobby shone gold and dripped fake diamonds from the ceiling, and the doors leading into Digital Storm's room were French - behind them, a trio of spokesmen welcomed me, leading us past a table of branded swag to the ottoman by the window that held the Bolt 2. That spot provided the best possible lighting for photos, Chief Brand Officer Harjit Chana said.

The Digital Storm team was friendly and hit their talking points well, describing the Bolt 2 as a high-end PC and its customers as high-end people. This wasn't a Steam Machine for a wide market - it had a specific, dedicated audience. They knew that, I knew I wasn't in that audience (or that tax bracket), and that was all right. It was an impressive piece of hardware.

Both of the scenarios that I encountered were valid, and each carried their own charm, but they were undeniably the efforts of two disparate companies with vastly different business senses, branded together under one name: Steam Machines. What I learned that day wasn't how Valve would change living room gaming forever - I learned that the term "Steam Machines" was straight-up nonsense.
