Just days after Minecraft creator Markus Persson began talking with Double Fine Productions about funding a sequel to Psychonauts, the studio has announced something equally crazy: it’s raising funds via Kickstarter to produce an adventure game from Tim Schafer.

Double Fine is hoping to raise $400,000 in 33 days, and with that number going up by the hundreds just minutes after the announcement, it seems pretty likely Double Fine will be able to hit that number, and likely have much more to play with.

“Crowd-sourced fundraising sites like Kickstarter have been an incredible boon to the independent development community,” reads the description. “They democratize the process by allowing consumers to support the games they want to see developed and give the developers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and design without anyone else compromising their vision. It's the kind of creative luxury that most major, established studios simply can't afford. At least, not until now.”

The game will be developed over six-to-eight months, with the target being a PC release over Steam in October.

A “small team” will be working on the game at Double Fine under the leadership of Schafer, and getting in on the ground floor--a copy of the game and early access to the beta, access to an ongoing documentary and private discussion forum--requires a donation of $15.

Mac and iOS versions of the game are under consideration, but only if they collect more than $400,000.

“For fans of adventure games,” said the studio, “this is a chance to prove that there is still a large demand out there for a unique medium that inspired so many of us.”

$8,404 and counting.

Tucked away in the dark, crowded bowels of Time Warner's financial results statement for fiscal 2011 is news that Rocksteady's blockbuster, bat-centric beat-em-up (that would be Batman: Arkham City) has shipped 6 million units, as of December 31, 2011. Now, "shipped" is a much different statistic than "sold," but it's a strong figure nonetheless.

It's difficult to tell how Warner Bros. Interactive did on its own in 2011, since its financial results are lumped in with two other Time Warner subsidiaries, (Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Television), both of which brought in astounding amounts of money with their respective Harry Potter and Big Bang Theory licenses. Overall, Time Warner's "Filmed Entertainment" (tv, movies and gaming) reported revenues of $12.6 billion; a 9 percent year-over-year increase.

The statement also mentions Mortal Kombat and "several LEGO titles" as key contributors to the division's successful year.

Having recently optioned rights to the Fighting Fantasy series of books from Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson, Epic Games is putting an interesting spin on its Make Something Unreal Live contest.

Here's how it works: four different start-up studios will each select one book from the fantasy series and make a game for Epic, to be released on the App Store sometime this spring. The winning team walks away with a free commercial Unreal Engine 3 license for iOS.

The books chosen are The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, The Citadel of Chaos, Deathtrap Dungeon and Armies of Death. Each title will premiere at Gadget Show Live 2012, which takes place from April 10 through April 15 in Birmingham, UK.

A portion of a Game Informer interview with David Jaffe...

GI: For your new IP, were you thinking of going exclusive or multiplatform?

DJ: Anybody who knows who I am knows who I am because of the kindness and faith of Sony. So I’m certainly loyal to that company. If they would like to have me I’d be honored and grateful to work with them.

I’ve always been very open about being an Xbox and Nintendo fan, too. It’s more to the point about who’s the right partner. But again it’s very new. The equivalent is something like just logging into my new online dating account. I just signed up. There’s nothing right now.

We all have goals in life -- some of us work for our families, some seek money and fame, and some work for a greater good. Minecraft forum user Rumsey's chosen path is to recreate the entire World of Warcraft inside the indie sandbox hit, Minecraft. And as you can see above, he's doing pretty well -- the entire continent of Kalimdor (including the new zones from the Cataclysm expansion) is almost done, and he's well on his way to doing the rest, including all of the instances and dungeons.

Rumsey came up with some custom software to put it all together, which basically translates the current maps of WoW over to the measurements of Minecraft blocks. Rumsey is trying to keep Minecraft's "1 yard to 1 block" ratio, though that means he has to balance WoW's detail with Minecraft's inherent blockiness (and Minecraft's height limit of 128 blocks has required mods to make some of WoW's tallest features work). Still, what's been created so far is certainly recognizable as Azeroth.

Now if we can only get StarCraft, Crafting Mama, CrimeCraft, GemCraft, and macaroni and cheese in this project somehow.

Killzone the First was scheduled to become a downloadable PSN game in late January, but has since been "delayed indefinitely," according to the official Killzone Twitter account.

Killzone franchise creators Guerrilla Games are currently working on the next entry in the series, as well as a still-unnamed "new IP."

In mid-January, Sega locked down a North American release date for Yakuza: Dead Souls, and now Europe's date with Tokyo-based zombies has finally been scheduled.

Yakuza: Dead Souls will arrive in Europe on March 16, according to Eurogamer. The PlayStation 3-exclusive is coming to North America on March 13, which is plenty of time for seasoned zombie killers to prepare for the impending attack. Already released in Japan under the name Yakuza: Of the End, the sixth game in the cult-hit series throws players into the "infamous red light district of Tokyo" during a zombie outbreak.

Don't fret, Yakuza fans, because zombies aren't the only enemy you'll be facing. Yakuza: Dead Souls will also throw hordes of "merciless" mutants in your path, along with all of those seedy characters from the Japanese underworld. As for possible zombie-infected Hostesses? We're keen on letting the brain-chomping ladies sit this one out.

If you signed into PSN on your PS3 to, say, try to buy a Vita game, you'll have run into this already: surprise! There's a new mandatory system update. According to Sony, version 4.10 accounts for the change in the name of your account, from "PSN account" to "SEN account."

The update also makes improvements to the PS3 browser, including "improved display speed." We'd compare it for you, but the one time I personally tried to use the PS3 browser in the past, it froze my system and I had to pull out the power cord to reset. So if the new browser doesn't do that, it's a dramatic improvement.

When game projects from major studios die, more often than not they aren't outright cancelled, they're "permanently delayed." It's kind of like ending up in limbo, we imagine, but with fewer giant murderous spiders. Anyway, such is the fate of an unannounced Killzone 1 HD remake that was headed to Sony's PlayStation 3, according to the official Killzone Twitter account.

"With regards to KZ1 for PS3, not sure what happened but I've been informed that it's been delayed indefinitely," the Twitter read earlier today. The account offered "no further info" about the project (after many, many folks pinged it in response). When we contacted Sony for more info, the company confirmed the news as official but declined to offer further comment.

Killzone franchise creators Guerrilla Games are currently working on the next entry in the series, as well as a still-unnamed "new IP." For those of you looking to re-play the original Killzone on a PlayStation 3, well, there's this. That's ... something, right?

We tasked young master Caldwell with exploring the dungeons of Fortune Summoners: Secret of the Elemental Stone, the latest translated Japanese indie title from Recettear Anglifiers Carpe Fulgur. He returned with these words.

As the son of a shopkeeper in real life I know for a fact that helping out in the storeroom is not a magical experience. So Recettear, while jovial in spirit and generally compelling, didn’t appeal to me in the same way as it did others. In the storerooms of the non-digital world there are lots of cardboard boxes to tear apart and smelly bins to stand on in an effort to crush rubbish and make space. Once, there was a fist-sized hole torn in the wall by an errant RPG of a completely different nature. It was dreadful and there was rubble in the 10p mix-ups. But that’s Northern Ireland for you, and another story altogether.(more…)
