What you saw above was an actual work-in-progress fan-made game. It’s set to come out in Janauary, and should be playable via NES emulator. I’m pretty sure Valve is going to embrace this tribute rather than squash it, so you should be able to play come January! Thanks to Q. [...]
Yes, this is a real item that’s sold at the Nintendo World Store. I’m sure many of them were purchased during the New Super Mario Bros. Wii launch event this past weekend. I think the next time I head out, I’ll pick one up! I don’t like Soccer, but I love Chain [...]
Reader Kamehameha X ended up winning a High Voltage contest, which landed him a limited edition t-shirt that proudly displays the company’s history.
I don’t know what makes me more depressed…the fact that I don’t have one of those shirts, or the fact that that size would probably fit me perfectly!
Hmmm…another Ridge Racer game. Any platform is game right now, but things usually slant towards the Sony side. Perhaps Namco Bandai wanted to take another stab at Ridge Racer on the DS?
“The Nintendo House allows people to try our software in a comfortable, inviting environment where they can get advice and help from our Nintendo ambassadors. We hope that over 150,000 people will get to play on the likes of Wii Fit Plus, Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box and New Super Mario Bros Wii.” - [...]
Yes, that’s 100% real, and it exists in San Francisco. EA must think that EA Sports Active/More Workouts has the potential to be a huge seller this holiday season. Check out the details and locations for these stores below. Huge thanks to SeraphisCain for the heads up!

Filed under: HacksIn a late-night press release, Atlus announced that it is in fact the company publishing 3D Dot Game Heroes in North America, confirming its status as the publisher of choice for fans of both Zelda homages and From Software games. The company even went so far to give the PS3 game a precise date: May 11, a day which will play host to an unheard-of number of underlines and gold stars on our calendar. GameStop, however, says May 3. We're willing to accept "May" as specific enough for now.
We've got some delightful new screens in the gallery below, if, like us, you're nowhere near over the novelty of giant pixels rendered in HD.
The PSP version of LittleBigPlanet is two shoulder buttons and an analog stick away from being one of the greatest games on Sony's portable platform.
There were plenty of things I loved in the original LBP -- frantic multiplayer, outstanding artistic and musical design, and an endless pool of community-generated content, to name a few -- but all of the game's delightful components relied heavily upon the strength of the its creation engine, and the aforementioned community's willingness to master the tools they've been provided.
While the PSP version of the game does an adequate job of transplanting these tools onto a portable console, a surprisingly large amount of that power and ease of use was sacrificed in the process. The level creation engine is functional, but doesn't come close to the standard set by the original game. That's partially because of the marginal changes that were made to how these tools function -- though, more than anything, the PSP's inherent lack of buttons plays the biggest role in the game's diminished accessibility.
We've heard the horror stories about the conditions under which famous Square translator Ted Woolsey had to work -- strictly constrained time and space limits and no feedback from the games' creators, which led to sometimes odd translations. Alexander O. Smith, who localized games for Square including Vagrant Story, shared some anecdotes about his tenure (and subsequent freelance work on games like Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions) that revealed that it wasn't much better for a translator in the PlayStation era. "We would get a copy of the game," Smith told Gamasutra about working on Final Fantasy VIII, "and we would say, 'Well, what about files?' And they would say, 'Oh, I don't think you need those.' So we all bought Game Sharks." Smith called the situation "very sad." He compared it to Final Fantasy XII, for which the team got full gameplay footage. The interview covers not just work for Square, but Smith's subsequent move into freelance with Joseph Reeder, and a lot of inside information about the localization work (and surprise musical careers) of both.

Michael Pachter comments on Wii HD again:
Pachter: Reggie needs to get out more. I have no personal knowledge of a Wii HD, and I’m sure Reggie has no personal knowledge, either. With that said, I’m pretty sure that there is at least one other person who believes a Wii HD is coming. [...]
I agree with every one of these disappointments to an extent. I admit that when Mario Sunshine came out I was at first disappointed, but looking back I had a lot of fun with that game and still play it every once in a while. It’s best to play it in the winter time! Then [...]
