Level-5 showed strong support for the 3DS platform at its Level-5 Vision event. In addition to revealing Professor Layton vs. Gyakuten Saiban, showing off Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, and announcing Time Travelers' migration to the 3D handheld, the developer also showcased two other 3DS games, both recently moved to 3DS from other platforms.

Fantasy Life, Brownie Brown's game about performing various jobs in an RPG-style town verging on apocalypse, was first announced for DS last year, but will now be released on 3DS, with a new polygonal art style, in 2011. It features contributions from Final Fantasy vets Yoshitaka Amano (doing illustrations) and Nobuo Uematsu (composing).

Level-5 also announced a 3DS version of Kyaba Joppi, a hostess simulator originally for the mobile game service ROID. Andriasang has screens of this adorable game -- which, we expect, won't leave Japan. It features guest customers like Lupin III.

A portion of a Dtoid review… Sure, I can already hear the buzzing of the publisher’s worker bees slapping together code for the next title in the series. But if they’re as enjoyable as this sequel, they’ll make a welcome addition to my next house party.

One of the blessings (and curses) of working in this industry is getting to play unfinished games well before their release date. The blessing part is obvious; we didn’t hesitate to knock off work early to go play Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood on PS3 at an Ubisoft preview event. Heck, that *is* work. The curse part sneaks up on you later; after sampling the first 3 hours of the game, I’ve been dying to play some more – something we can’t do until the game hits store shelves on November 16th.

Don’t feel sorry for us – it was our job to quiz the development team from Ubisoft Montreal on what we saw, and Mission Director Gaelic Simard was all too happy to answer our questions and yours.

A bit more on those first few hours of the game (with as little in the realm of spoilers as possible)…

As someone who saw Assassin’s Creed II all the way through to a Platinum Trophy, I was curious as to what would be cut from the single player experience. From what I can tell – there are only additions.

I’ve seen Ezio man a cannon, sink a ship, and even pilot a primitive, da Vinci-designed tank. You can stray further from the narrative if you like, taking on assassinations for hire. Horses can be ridden in the city streets, making for more dramatic chases and getaways. If you were into the development of Monteriggioni, all of Rome now lies at your feet for renovation.

One of the more interesting changes I saw was in the way you perform your main quests. Sure, you can kill a target outright and advance the story. But if you perform a designated secondary action during an assassination, like breaking the mark’s defense with a kick (oh yeah, you can do that now), then you’ll increase your synchronization level. That can lead to some of Ezio’s lost memories resurfacing, in playable form.

We only scratched the surface of the single-player campaign in our play session. A completionist like myself will have plenty to keep themselves busy with, and that’s before even touching the multiplayer. That’s exactly what I was hoping for.

A "massive" redesign of Xbox.com will launch tomorrow, Major Nelson has announced. Beginning at 5PM ET on October 20, Xbox.com and the Xbox Forums will go offline for "a short period of time" to integrate the update. Once live again, the site will be all tidy and clean (pictured; more images here) and introduce several browser-based activities.

Notably, a full Avatar Editor will be added to Xbox.com, allowing users to create, edit and start all over with their Avatars, as well as try on Avatar Marketplace items before purchasing them -- take note: "It just looked so fresh on the mannequin" will no longer be a valid excuse for spending 4 bucks on a Flashy Suit. The Major also teases the new ability to "play web games with your Xbox Live friends on the web or on Windows Phone 7" (but do we get Achievements for that?).

The update will also improve messaging functionality on the site and provide access to Xbox Live usage data for family accounts -- you know, to track your kids' hours. We don't have to remind you how critical it is for the little ones to keep up with their Modern Warfare 2 regimen to ensure a strong start in Black Ops competition this November -- gotta keep those K/D ratios up! The 12-year-old might have trouble juggling multiplayer and school work, sure, but it's not like the fourth grader has that much homework getting in the way of a real shot to go pro one day.

During THQ's Montreal event, core games EVP Danny Bilson categorized its FPS Homefront as a primarily multiplayer experience, though "the single-player is extraordinary," he said (of course).

"The emphasis is on multiplayer," Bilson explained, "but with an awesome movie to play through on the other side." The reason one even has to be emphasized over the other is, of course, budget. "To get to the old things we used to play, like the 20 hours of single-player," he said, "you'd have to sacrifice, perhaps, the depth of the multiplayer, or have a five-year schedule and unlimited budget." The two portions of the game take place in different settings and involve very different gameplay, with the single-player game involving guerrilla warfare and the multiplayer involving all-out army vs. army combat.

Bilson estimated that the single-player portion of the game -- the "awesome movie" -- will run between six and ten hours, which makes it more of an awesome miniseries. The multiplayer is "hopefully in the hundred-hour range." That means it's going to be really heartbreaking if the game is changed at the last minute to be about an invasion from the North Opposing Force.

EA will release a free multiplayer download pack for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Medal of Honor on November 2. Well, free for those who have the Online Pass, of course -- multiplayer DLC wouldn't do you any good if you didn't have that anyway.

The DLC adds a new multiplayer mode called "Clean Sweep," in which American troops help organize a messy home "an elimination mode where players must rely on their own skill and teammates' expertise to prevail as the winning team." The DLC includes two new maps designed for the new mode, called Bagram Hangar and Khyber Caves, and new versions of the Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins maps also designed for Clean Sweep.
