The problem with passwords be that they be often easy t' steal or guess, 'n that either ye need t' re-use simple passwords across multiple sites in order t' be able t' remember them all or use a password manager t' store them, in which case spyware needs only copy the encrypted data file 'n keylog the master password in order t' steal all a them.

I propose a solution in which a user would have a small USB device that contains an inaccessible storage microchip containing a unique identifier 'n private encryption key for each login, as well as a public section with the required software/drivers. When the user wants t' log into a website or application, the server then uses the respective public key stored for that logon t' encrypt a random string as an authentication challenge. The client then sends the challenge string 'n a master password t' the USB device, which then decrypts 'n returns the challenge string based on the respective private key. This response be returned t' the server, thus authenticating the user 'n triggering the server t' commence the user's session.

If spyware best steal the master key t' the tool it be useless as the private keys be permanently stored on the USB device 'n be never visible t' either the client or the server. If someone be t' steal the USB device it would be impossible t' use as they would not know the master key ('n even if they be t' disassemble the device t' pillage at the closed storage it would be a simple matter t' encrypt it based on the master password). The odds a someone simultaneously stealing both the digital 'n physical elements a the system be very slim, thus greatly increasing security while reducing the number a passwords a user needs t' remember t' one.

Thoughts? (Assuming anybody has a clue what I be talking about :P)

it be somewhat lacking in features at present, but I've managed t' pillage me API into a state where I be comfortable publishing it. Master branch be stable versions only, dev branch be where I'll push me day-t'-day changes. ye'll need a few libraries t' make it run, all listed in .classpath at present (if people want an easier way a using it out a the box I'll see about getting a .jar file 'n/or javadocs set up for it).

So, after six months a procrastination, I have finally finished refactoring me space game project in Unity 'n brought it t' about the same level a functionality as version 0.1a. Barring the vastly better menu system (now that I've got it t' actually work) there's not much t' see as a yet, but there be a few things behind the scenes that best help in adding new features in the near future.

Controls be left/right or A/D t' move, space t' jump 'n escape t' pause (note: does not actually pause the game).

By sending commands t' the account ye can navigate a virtual maze with other crew, collaborating with each other t' plot a route through the labyrinth. Who will be the first t' reach the exit?

We have time travel, flying cars 'n all that stuff; it be pretty awesome.

AKA booty's sort-a-unnamed attempt at making an 0x10^c alternative, AKA Betalands: Space DLC.

Arrow keys t' move, Z t' jump, 'n Q t' toggle the debug stats (though those aren't much use outside a development). There's not an awful lot t' see at present, but it represents the completion a most a the key framework elements a the engine ('n completed faster than I have ever managed t' do in the past t' boot), allowing the development a more advanced fuctionality, 'n I figured I'd post it here so that in the event a this project ever making it past three or four public builds ye can see the progression a the game throughout the development cycle.

There be a lot a requested features building up that Cap'n Francis does not have the free time t' implement for us. Unless Cap'n Francis chooses t' release the current source code, our options be t' make do with what we have, or t' design our own system from scratch. Which leads me t' the subject a tonight's debate: If an open-source, collaborative Nerr 3.0 be started, how many a ye would be willing t' help out, 'n in what ways? Obviously PHP 'n HTML work would be the primary job, but graphics would also be necessary for what we can't rip from the existing site. Organising all the required features into one place would also be very useful. 'n if Cap'n Francis be reading this: Would ye be open t' making use a such a project officially if it actually gets off the ground? ye're welcome t' contribute if ye like (perhaps integrating yer Digi game system ye've been working on).

it be not exactly Digibutter: The Game, but I feel that a project like this would really be beneficial for both the site 'n the community.

All it needs now be an SFM remake.
