#fineart There once was a time Obsidian was making an RPG based on the Aliens universe. That game has since been cancelled, but today we're looking at some art done for the project by Charles Lee. More »

Yesterday I spoke to two people about Dungeon Siege III. One claimed that playing the demo was such an agonising experience that she cancelled her preorder, the other boldly stated that it was the finest ARPG of its time. I was tempted to make them fight it out by furiously clicking on one another but it didn’t seem right. Not in the real world. Today, there is news of a big chunk of DLC due in October. You’ll have to shell out for this, around $9.99, but it does sound there’ll be a healthy amount of content. That’s if you consider searching for treasure and ruins in a desert full of monsters healthy. New monsters and items are par for the course, but there’s more! An enchanting system will allow you to make your shiniest loot even more shiny and you’ll also be able to respec your character. Cue cries of: “It should have been in the base game!” No word if there’ll be a further patch for us PC folk alongside the DLC. Personally, I stopped playing the game before the keybinding patch so don’t know how much that did to improve things. Any thoughts?

Updates to Dungeon Siege III have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Dungeon Siege III
  • Keybinding has now been implemented into Dungeon Siege III
  • Added two new controls that will allow the players to move left or right. This is included on the keybinding screen.
  • Fixes an issue where the gamepad would default to on, even if you have no gamepad plugged in.
  • Fixed an issue in Multiplayer where if either the host or the client is using a gamepad and are playing with someone who is using the mouse/keyboard, the host hangs when switching to the ending cutscene.
  • Fixed an issue with certain graphic cards where it would occasionally display large black pixels in the middle of the screen.
  • Fixed a potential crash when players try to reconnect after disconnecting during a conversation.
  • We've implemented a fix that will revert the A/D reversed issue for people that are still reporting this issue.
  • Fixed a potential crash when players would join a Multiplayer game in a certain order.

If you really, really want to besiege dungeons three-at-a-time, then this competition is for you. In celebration of there first being Dungeon Siege, and then two of it, and now three of it, the lovely chaps at Square and Obsidian have provides three sets of all three games for you guys to win. That’s right: Dungeon Siege One, Two, And Three (Count ‘em!) for you to play. They’re Steam codes, too, so if you already have one of the games you could always pass the code along to a chum. That sounds like a decent prize to me, but what to do to win it?

Well, we want dungeon-themed limmericks. Send yours to this address, and the best of them, as judged by us, will win the codes. The competition closes 12 noon UK time on Monday. Also see: rules.

The third siege of dungeons arrived a little while back, with Obsidian taking the reins of the Gas-Powered Games-created loot’n'kill fandango. I’ve been frantically clicking my mouse button at it for the last few days – an act which I have now transformed into some words.

First point of interest for me in any dungeon crawler: can I summon animals? Silently beating up monsters in rock corridors gets pretty lonely, after all. Also, I’m really very lazy – if there’s some companion animal doing half the damage for me I don’t need to press so many number keys.

Dungeon Siege III delivers on this front, at least. My stocking-wearing gunwoman can summon a spectral hound to antagonise foes while she snipes them from afar. On top of that, one of the AI-controlled companions (only one of which you can have with you at any one time) can summon a flaming hound. It’s doggy carnage out there.

Much as the blooming of the crocuses signals the arrival of Spring, so too does the blooming of complaint-filled forum threads seem to signal the arrival of a new Obsidian-developed game.

All this man wanted was proper mouse-and-keyboard controls in Dungeon Siege III. Now, just look what he's been reduced to: A stock photograph of a man angry at a computer.

In this case, the complaints pertain to Dungeon Siege III, Obsidian's take on the classic dungeon crawling RPG series that saw release earlier this week. While the general response to the game has been mostly decent, many PC players reported dissatisfaction with the PC version's mouse-and-keyboard control scheme, which eschews many of the dungeon crawling genre standards to the point where some purists deemed the situation untenable, and just picked up a gamepad (which, by all accounts, works far better).

Lead designer Nathan Chapman is apparently well aware of players' issues with the control scheme, and in talking to Eurogamer this morning, explained that Obsidian plans to update the control scheme in the near future to something more traditional.

Actually this is one thing I would have liked to have spent more time on, and we are actually spending time on now. Basically, I think as long as PC gamers have a good way to control the combat they will enjoy it. One review - I can't remember which - said if you play with a game pad the combat is great, so right now we're working on improving the PC controls through an update.

Though there's no immediate timetable for this update's release, it sounds like Obsidian is already hard at work on it. What say you, Giant Bomb PC community? Are you looking forward to a new mouse-and-keyboard scheme? Or were you okay with what was originally offered?

Obsidian lead designer Nathaniel Chapman has stated in an interview with Eurogamer that the developers are currently working on a patch to improve the PC version of Dungeon Siege 3‘s keyboard and mouse controls. I’ve yet to play the PC version of DS3, but I was witness to Alec’s agitated bellowing about the PC controls (among other things), so I’m going to go ahead an assume that this is a good thing.(more…)

A dungeon crawler without good loot, like Dungeon Siege III, is missing something essential. If the prizes that pop out don't feel valuable, there's no slot machine appeal of opening chests, busting apart wooden barrels or slicing up monsters. Dungeon Siege III's bits of loot come with all kinds of ...

Dungeon Siege's history is a little twisted at this point. The first two series entries were PC-only titles produced by Gas Powered Games, whereas Dungeon Siege III's development was handled by Obsidian Studios with PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms in mind. Dungeon Siege III has some of the noisiest visuals I’ve ever seen in an RPG. I’ve made fun them before. What, then, is a good solution when you want to advertise the game on a television?

Square Enix came up with a solution. A million thanks to RPS reader João “Mellow” Melo for sending this in.(more…)

This? Right here? This is how it should be done. A whole ten days (and eight hours) ahead of Dungeon Siege 3′s release, Square Enix and Obsidian have put out a demo on the game’s Steam page. BOOM! That was the sound of assorted expectations being blown out of the water.

It’s especially handy seeing as it’s only in playing DS3 that you learn just how much they’ve changed the Dungeon Siege formula into something slower, with a greater emphasis on decisions, action and co-op play, and less of an emphasis on loot, donkeys and scenery. The demo contains “a small taste of Dungeon Siege III’s single-player and 2-person local co-op modes (co-op requires two controllers)”, but I’ll be able to get more specific in about 1.5 gigabytes’ time.

VG247‘s posted a new trailer for arcade hack’n'slash RPG Dungeon Siege III, featuring footage of the game’s four player co-op mode. Tell you what, as much as a deviation from Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 as this is, with four characters explosively disassembling monsters on the same screen and with the camera tilted just so, it finally starts to look like a Dungeon Siege game. Does every game have to have a comic now? I don’t mind a comic, but sometimes I just want the game, and none of this stringing myself along with prequel content and backstory in a different medium. Anyway, I’m probably being a miserabilist. So there’s a Dungeon Siege III tie-in comic due from Dark Horse, spanning three issues – this is good news if you’re into DS lore, I guess.

You get a full-length print copy if you pre-order the game from certain stores (Wal-Mart specifically; not sure about non-US territories yet) or you can read one of its two 10-page stories for free on the magic internet here. You’ll need to create a Dark Horse Digital account. Should you bother? No, not really. It’s just pretty bland exposition and plot setup for the game, really. But it’s free! That’s important, right?
