The following info comes from director Yoshihisa Tsuda...

“The world-building which you have seen is used for almost all scenes [in the game]. I decided that Gunvolt would fight with lightning strikes during early stages of development. At that point, I emphasized the ‘Night View of the Near Future’ world-building that I considered to be the most effective for Gunvolt.

I’ve had a lot of formative experiences involving anime and comics from the ‘90s, so I believe Azure Striker Gunvolt has been influenced by those as well. For example, in the case of anime, this is before the ‘90s, but Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, Giant Robo (OVA,) Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and such.

In terms of manga, Locke the Superman (by Yuki Hijiri), Fuma no Kojiro (by Masami Kurumada), Raimei no Zaji (by Masami Kurumada), Commander 0 (by Jun Tomizawa) and many other splendid works of anime and comics have been an inspiration.

I think that it is the essence of an action game to play them many times and to improve step-by-step. Similarly, Azure Striker Gunvolt aims for a structure where the story can gradually be understood by the player through obtaining snippets of information. In Azure Striker Gunvolt, the story will be told in the action game through messages that automatically appear on the screen as you play. It’s a system that will have players put together these fragmented messages, as they start understanding the story and character’s feelings better.”

Kirk says Tropical Skyrim is a "tragedy". I say "IT'S LIKE SKYRIM BUT WITH FAR CRY 3". Whatever your stance on what the ambitious mod (which you can get here) does to the fifth Elder Scrolls game, you can't argue with the fact it makes for a very pretty thing to look at.Read more...

With a little less than 48 hours left, Snowcastle Games' Earthlock: Festival of Magic has hit its initial Kickstarter goal. The goal was set at $150,000 and this was surpassed mere moments ago. The game should be arriving early next year, if everything goes according to plan that is!

According to the latest issue of ONM UK, NERO will be coming to the Wii U eShop. Not much is known about the title, but players will be taken on a first-person journey across a midnight dreamscape. Carlo Bianchi, the creative director at Storm in a Teacup added: ''Let’s just say that Nero is about finding out a truth that is going to be gold through gameplay.''

NERO will release on multiple systems, but the Wii U version will have all the UI elements on the GamePad. There will be a map on there and extra indicators to make it all tick.

The last time we spoke with Misfits Attic founder Tim Keenan about this game, it was called Scavenger, and it was a paper prototype starring tower-defense mechanics and a Han Solo-esque character traveling the galaxy to pay off his debts. Now, it's called Duskers, and it's darker. The game has migrated to the screen, and it's no longer tower defense; instead, it's a roguelike with RTS and dungeon-crawling aspects in a survival-horror setting.

"You pilot drones into derelict spaceships to find the means to survive and piece together how the universe became a giant graveyard," Keenan explains in his pitch video. In Hollywood terms, Keenan compares Duskers to The Road and the original Alien.

The art in the pitch video is temporary, but the mechanics are nearing their final forms. Players must use power-ups and abilities to outsmart and avoid enemies waiting behind various spaceship doors. "The game's strongest moments come when you feel that there is no solution to a problem, but then by creatively thinking about what upgrades you have and the predicament you're in, you have this MacGyver-type moment where you come up with a plan," Keenan says.

Keenan is looking at funding options for Duskers (Kickstarter is the "worst case" option), but the tentative plan is to get it on Steam Early Access for PC this year, with a full launch in 2015, he tells Joystiq. So far, his previous game, A Virus Named Tom, has kept the lights on, but it's not quite enough to fund a second game. Misfits Attic has a few projects in the works right now.
