Usually when a television screen bleeds, it's not cause for celebration, nor does it signify the cutting edge of new technology. Microsoft's Illumiroom challenges that thought, using Kinect and a projector to transpose relevant video and images around the TV, on walls and furniture, while playing games.

Illumiroom can add flickering lights, particles and ambiance to certain games, or expand the environment in others, though it's still a prototype for now. Microsoft showed off Illumiroom in a video at the Samsung CES keynote, and it looked something like the above film.

"IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept Microsoft Research project designed to push the boundary of living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual and physical worlds with projected visualizations," the Illumiroom YouTube description reads. "The effects in the video are rendered in real time and are captured live - not special effects added in post processing."

So I guess the next Xbox will be bundled with Kinect, a projector, and a Surface tablet.

The Humble Indie Bundle is indie once again, offering a bunch of games and one movie for the low, low price of whatever you have. Humble Indie Bundle 7 includes Snapshot, The Binding of Isaac and its Wrath of the Lamb DLC, Closure, Shank 2, and a copy of Indie Game: The Movie.

Dungeon Defenders and its DLC, and Legend of Grimrock are added to the bundle for anyone paying over the average. This hasn't been announced yet, but spoiler alert: More games will be added to the bundle over time. We're psychic.

As expected, the developers behind the strange indie title Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden have launched a Kickstarter campaign to support a sequel sporting the the unwieldy title of The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 - Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie - Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. Or, as they call it, just Barkley 2 for short.

The campaign is seeking just $35,000 (and they've raised about half already), and in return is offering lots of digital rewards, game soundtracks to download, and weirder bonuses like a full-sized Cyberdwarf body pillow and more.

To get interest growing for the sequel, the developer has released a free Mac version of its initial Barkley title, so even on an Apple computer, you can witness the aftermath of The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041 for yourself.

With the recent launch of Steam Big Picture, it hasn't taken long for the words "Steam Box" to enter the collective gaming community's brain space. Valve boss Gabe Newell reignited that discussion when speaking on the red carpet at last night's Video Game Awards ceremony about the company's plans to enter the hardware business.

Newell told Kotaku that he sees multiple companies entering the hardware space, and that "most customers and most developers are gonna find that [the PC is] a better environment for them." His reasoning is that consumers "won't have to split the world into thinking about 'why are my friends in the living room, why are my video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully are gonna unify those environments."

The Valve boss suggested that companies would launch PC bundles in 2013 designed to run Steam in the living room and compete with next gen consoles. Newell added that Valve is one of those companies, and its efforts may not be as open-source as some might expect:

"Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment. If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that's what some people are really gonna want for their living room. The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions, and customers can find the ones that work best for them."
Francis
Consumers don't care about having a full desktop OS hooked up to their TV. If Valve is going to sell a stripped down PC that is Steam-certified or whatever that auto-updates drivers then that is a console. To be able to run "next gen" games it will be a $1000+ PC so how is that going to compete with consoles that run the same games at half the price?

The Humble Indie Bundle has taken a turn for the mainstream, today offering the Humble THQ Bundle, which includes six THQ games for whatever price you think they're worth, available for two weeks. Saints Row: The Third is the bundle's locked game, freed up only if you pay more than the average.

The six games up for grabs are Company of Heroes, CoH: Tales of Valor, CoH: Opposing Fronts, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033 and Darksiders. Each purchase comes with the soundtracks for Saints Row: The Third, Darksiders and Red Faction: Armageddon, and two Company of Heroes compilations.

As always, the Humble Bundle includes the option to distribute your money as you wish, between charity, THQ or Humble Bundle itself. If you're looking for a monetary serving suggestion, may we suggest looking up THQ's current stock price and following along with us as it navigates a path of financial turmoil.

Those 160 Coins you got for registering a Wii U on Club Nintendo can now go toward an accessory for the console. The Gold Nunchuk quickly went out of stock upon its first appearance in August, and is now back in stock for 900 Coins.

Perhaps having a cool gold Nunchuk would help alleviate the momentary irritation of having to get out four Nunchuks to play Metroid Blast with friends in Nintendo Land, and then immediately disconnect them to play anything else.

Online game publisher Nexon has announced that it's teaming up with Valve to bring the free-to-play Dota 2 to the Japanese and Korean markets. Dota 2 is of course based on a Warcraft 3 mod named Defense of the Ancients, and the multiplayer online battle arena style of gameplay, inspired by real-time strategy games, will likely appeal very much to those overseas markets. Valve's Gabe Newell says, according to the press release, that "partnering with Nexon will allow us to deliver Dota 2 to a massive audience of Asian gamers via a premium service."

Dota 2's competitor League of Legends has already been enormously popular in Korea, with a South Korean team nabbing the world title at the last championships. So Valve is likely expecting a lot from Nexon, in terms of delivering the game to these new markets. Dota 2 is currently in closed beta and heading toward a free-to-play launch soon.

The Humble Android and Indie Royale Harvest bundles both go live today, for double the wallet-friendly, finger-happy goodness. First, the Humble Android Bundle:

The fourth installment in the Humble Android series brings Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP to Android for the first time, in beta form (Capy warns in a tweet that it still has some kinks to work out for Android). Also bundled are Splice, Eufloria, Waking Mars and Crayon Physics Deluxe. Pay more than the average and snag Machinarium on Android as well.

All games in the Humble Android Bundle come in PC, Mac and Linux form as well, and they all include official soundtracks. Pay at least $1 and get a Steam key for all the games, excluding Waking Mars (which is on Steam Greenlight). All Humble Indie Bundles benefit Child's Play Charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but of course customers are able to portion out their payment however they see fit.

Now on to the Indie Royale Harvest Bundle:

This fall, indie is in - the Harvest Bundle includes Mutant Mudds, Pineapple Smash Crew, Spirits, Avernum: The Great Trials Trilogy and BasketBelle. All purchases come with the BasketBelle soundtrack and digital sketchbook, and the Spirits soundtrack. Those who spend more than $8 get a bonus chiptune music album from Data Airlines.

Pineapple Smash Crew, Spirits and Avernum: The Great Trials Trilogy are all available for Steam, while Mutant Mudds and BasketBelle are on Desura. Check the Harvest Bundle page for complete platform details for each game.

Happy cheap indie game day, everyone!

Its worth noting the Surface's trademark fancy keyboard covers aren't included in the purchase price -- the Touch Cover carries a $120 premium, and the Type Cover rings up at $130. There is a bundle, however, that packages the 64-gig model and a Touch Cover for $700.

TPA defeated South Korean team Azubu Frost in the final round. The League of Legends World Championship tournament saw a snowball of delays, beginning with "connectivity issues" and concluding with reports of cheating. Riot Games issued multiple "unsportsmanlike conduct" warnings and slapped one player, Azubu Frost's Woong, with a $30,000 fine (20 percent of the $150,000 prize for advancing to the semifinals).

Still, the tournament ended on time and with a clear winner. Congratulations, TPA, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

With the walls closing in, Zynga announced CityVille 2 is in closed beta. The company couldn't share any info but to say it "delivers a truly social and visually rich city building experience." It will launch soon. Not that investors seem to currently care.

As the LA Times notes, Zynga's combined cash, securities and real estate assets are currently worth about $2.46 a share, according to analysts. But, its stock is currently trading below that price (as of this writing: $2.43), which means the company's games business is essentially worth "nothing."

These dark tidings come as brothers Paul and David Bettner, known for Words with Friends, leave Zynga. This is on top of so many high-profile departures we'd be bombarding you every other day with a post, but let's just close this off by saying some milestone moments were the departures of chief creative officer Mike Verdu, chief operating officer John Schappert and Draw Something studio OMGPOP's Wilson Kriegel.

Forbes points out Zynga is one of the worst performing stocks of the years, down 74 percent, making it one the worst-performing stocks among U.S. companies with market caps over a billion dollars. And, to think, when Zynga went public in December last year everything looked like it was going to be sunshine and lollipops... oh, wait, no it didn't.

Square Enix has revealed Kingdom Hearts is finally on its way to current-era home consoles. In typical wacky naming fashion for the publisher, the bundle including HD remastered versions of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts - Re:Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days will launch in 2013 under the banner of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix.

No stranger to re-releases, the Kingdom Hearts franchise will further update the PS2 re-release of Chain of Memories - originally a GBA game - to the PS3. Final Mix was a Japanese-exclusive re-release of the first game, which added new content found in the North American version of the game. Though the DS-exclusive 358/2 Days would probably see the most tweaking to get it to land on home consoles, speculation based on a Famitsu report is the PS3 release will only feature remade cutscenes from in the handheld title and not its gameplay.

Additionally, Square Enix revealed a browser-based, online social card game set within the Kingdom Hearts universe, according to the same Famitsu report.

Joystiq has a team in Japan for TGS 2012 - which officially begins tomorrow - and will look to have Square Enix explain exactly what the PS3 bundle includes and whether the company plans to bring it stateside.

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. Jet Set Radio was more than one of the Dreamcast's best games. Jet Set Radio was emblematic of the system, exhibiting a joyful atmosphere, bright color scheme and arcade-style gameplay that all seemed unique to the last Sega hardware. The game will forever be associated with its Dreamcast home.

Uncoupling the game from the Dreamcast, however, does nothing to diminish the unforgettable atmosphere that developer Smilebit created. In fact, the association is strong enough that in playing the new HD version, I forget that I'm playing a new version on new hardware. It's just Jet Set Radio, looking how I always remembered it looking anyway.

It's still the most upbeat game about teenagers being shot at by tanks in response to minor acts of vandalism.

EA has tried "over the years" to buy out Valve, the New York Times reports. These talks, had they ever reached negotiation, would have valued Valve at "well over $1 billion," NYT says, which is most likely a ridiculous understatement.

Valve is a private company controlled by founder Gabe Newell, who doesn't release any of its financials, but Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter estimates Valve is worth $2.5 billion today.

Newell says it's likely Valve's employees would scatter and the company would "disintegrate" before it would be sold.

"It's way more likely we would head in that direction than say, 'Let's find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate,'" Newell says.

Mojang, the studio in front of the man behind Minecraft, was working on a first-person shooter with another company, Markus "Notch" Persson tells Joystiq. The collaboration and the project itself is now completely dead, Notch confirms, following yesterday's news of a mysterious cancellation.

The FPS was killed off in the prototype stage, not because it wasn't turning into a good game, but because Mojang "did not want more external dependencies," Notch says. "The success of Minecraft meant we could focus on projects fully owned by us."

Future collaborations aren't out of the question for Mojang, as long as they're "not to make money. If there are other reasons to collaborate, maybe!"

Here's a reason: Portal guns in Minecraft.

Mercenary Kings is a side-scrolling run-and-gun with weapon crafting elements. Developer Tribute Games (made up of the team from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Wizorb) now requires some help crafting the actual game, for which it's launched a Kickstarter drive.

The Kickstarter goal is $75,000, but Tribute is hoping to raise $200,000 or more, at which point it'll be able to include more content, including four-player online co-op, additional missions, weapons, character customizations, and more things to have more of.

Rewards include copies of the game (and Tribute's previous game, Wizorb), beta access, t-shirts, hoodies designed by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, and more extravagant goals like being drawn into the game as a hostage by animator Paul Robertson.

"We've been blown away the whole time," Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said this afternoon, just 10 hours ahead of her company's Kickstarter project reaching its end. It's an understandable reaction considering the Android-based open-source console aimed to gather just $950K in total - the project lept over $1 million in its first eight hours, and crested over $8 million this afternoon. The final number at time of publishing? $8,580,682 (from 63,277 backers).

Uhrman believes the reaction goes beyond what her company's offering, and that the Ouya's success is more than just a measure of interest in the console. "People are ready for something new, and Ouya is that thing," she claimed.

Since we first heard about Ouya, it's gotten a whole mess of new features and support. Both Namco and Square Enix are working with the console, as are a variety of multimedia applications (iHeartRadio, XBMC, OnLive), not to mention indies. "We never expected to do this well and be this well-received," Uhrman added. "It's just truly amazing that it's resonated so well with gamers and developers."

Uhrman said that, beyond the Kickstarter backers getting their consoles first, Ouya will be "taking pre-orders" via web for consoles, and those will ship at some point in April 2013. Ouya backers can expect their consoles to arrive at some point in March 2013, and Ouya promises we'll hear more before ... yup, 2013.

Valve recently announced that it will be bringing a few of Steam's most popular games to Linux, the first of those being Left 4 Dead 2. But besides the novelty factor of running the now classic zombie simulator on penguin-emblazoned hardware, there may be another reason to try the new platform out: It'll be faster. Even now, during development, the Valve team has L4D2 running at 315 frames per second on the Linux text platform, as compared to the standard Windows speed of 270.6 FPS.

At that point, of course, the speeds are mostly arbitrary. But as Valve says, this speed shows the potential in customizing a game for the Linux operating system. This work on Linux is also benefiting the Windows teams - in working on the Linux version, Valve was able to speed up the Windows OpenGL version to 303.4 FPS.

The free DLC - labeled the "Fanfiction Pack" - adds gender-swapped versions of all playable characters, turning Tycho into Tyche, Gabe into Gabbie, Moira into Manuel, and Jim into Benjamina.

The pack also adds a "furry" option that makes Tycho a lion, Gabe a pony, Moira an American Red Fox and Jim a turtle. Both packs alter gameplay and cutscenes, a feat that took a bit of extra work for Zeboyd, and, as Penny Arcade notes, makes the developer "very cool."

Wheatley, the adorably dumb and delightfully devious Space Core in Portal 2, is making a real-life trip to space. Kind of.

An anonymous tech at NASA got away with laser-engraving the above image of Wheatley with the quote "In spaaaaaaace!" on the Japanese HTV-3 resupply craft to the ISS. Wheatley and the craft are set to launch on Friday, July 27, at 10:06 EST. You can watch the launch beginning at 9:15 EST on Friday at the NASA TV website.

"NASA in no way officially endorses secretly laser-engraving characters from Portal onto their spacecraft," the Portal 2 blog writes. "Believe it or not, they don't even officially endorse Portal 2, despite the fact that it's a really excellent game." But someone (or some robot) at NASA obviously respects quality entertainment.
