#guildwars I know everyone is disappointed that they don't get to see my crappy red tablecloth and hear my children babbling in the background, but trust me, this is for the best, if only for the myriad opportunities to dust off "that's what she said". It's Felicia Day! And Guild Wars 2! More »

Guild Wars 2 is quite well-liked in our fabulously attractive (have you seen our brand new sexy, sexy hotbar?) corner of the Internet. Richard alone has written 427 trillion words on the subject of ArenaNet’s fantastic-looking fantasy sequel, and he’ll soon be embarking on a hot air balloon journey to see how many times they can wrap around the surface of the Earth. So when I went to a recent Guild Wars 2 showcase in my neck of the woods, I wasn’t too terribly surprised when I got an eye-full of content we’d already covered. So I did what any sensible person would in my situation: grilled game designer Mike Zadorojny about jumping puzzles in a swords ‘n’ sorcery MMORPG.

#guildwars Yesterday's Q&A with Guild Wars 2 content designer Mike Zadorojny painted the development of next month's blockbuster MMO in broad strokes. Today ArenaNet releases a series of videos that break the game's design down to four core components: dynamic events, player versus player, personal story and combat. More »

#guildwars This past weekend's final Guild Wars 2 beta event gave players access to the plant-based Sylvari and the Muppet-based Asura for the first time. Thousands of new characters were made, and it looked something like this. More »

#guildwars It's testament to just how damn pretty Guild Wars 2 is that, despite me being someone who'd normally rather set my face on fire than play an MMO, I'm quietly excited about sitting down the game. More »

This weekend sees the final Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend, with the big addition of its two remaining races – the ingenious gnome-like Asura, and the flowery Sylvari. You’ll be able to play as either… or indeed both, if you like… but what can you expect from the trip? ArenaNet gave me early access to the Sylvari starting area to check out Levels 1-15 in detail.

Will there be awful botanical puns? I suspect we may be facing arborgeddon.

#guildwars There are five races in Guild Wars 2, but up until now we've only been able to play as three - the humans, the cat people, and the bigger humans. ArenaNet rectifies this the weekend of July 20-22, when the Asura and Sylvari finally get their chance to shine. More »

So, Guild Wars 2 is out on August 28th and that’s about all there is to say about that, except possibly ‘finally’ and ‘hurrah’. I could try to construct a tortured metaphor about bowler hats, butlers and afternoon tea but you’d probably rather just see official confirmation in the form of a video which uses a series of increasingly rapid cuts to build excitement. Good thing I have one of those somewhere around here.

For a limited time today, developer ArenaNet is putting its upcoming online world, Guild Wars 2, to the test with a four-hour beta event. Joystiq, having recently discovered the joy of yelling into a microphone while readers watch editors fail at video games, will be streaming the tail-end of today's event. Watch it after the break.

From 3:30pm to 5pm ET, the stream from Joystiq's new Twitch.tv account (which you should totally follow) will be open. While Xav de Matos plays through the game with a fresh character, Massively columnist Elisabeth Cardy will be on hand to manage your questions from the stream chat and comments on this post. Hilarious banter between both editors is expected, but not guaranteed.

This event represents a game still in beta and things may not function properly. Due to the nature of a "stress test" we may experience crashes, game freezes, and other performance and connection issues. The stream will later be available on Joystiq's YouTube channel. Subscribe!

Update: The stream is over, but we've added the YouTube embed of what you missed.

While most of the attention on Guild Wars 2 has been on its main world, where quests and stories await your heroism, there’s a whole second way to play – the eternal PvP war that is World vs. World vs. World, where both players and monsters are ready to get in your face. But can you really climb the levels in it? For this beta weekend, I decided to give it a shot…

There’s to be another beta weekend for Guild Wars 2, the MMO that resolutely refuses to launch. Which means, once again, I won’t be able to play the thing due to weekend plans. Specifically in this case, camping in Sherwood Forest and listening to indie bands. Can’t we have a beta weekday evening or two instead, please?

If you are around for the 8th to 10th of June, you should be able to hop onto a GW2 beta server presuming you’ve either pre-ordered or already managed to snag a beta account from somewhere. The good news of previous beta-barons is that characters from the first weekend haven’t been wiped, so this might be your chance to have a nose at some of the higher-level contentydoodledoo.(more…)

The Guild Wars 2 beta opened the weekend of April 27 to anyone who had pre-purchased the title, free from NDAs or embargoes, and "hundreds of thousands" of people signed on to test it out, ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien writes. ArenaNet couldn't handle all of the potential players, but as any practiced spokesman would, O'Brien frames the insufficient server capacity in its most positive form:

"The number of people who pre-purchased the game far exceeded our expectations, and we had to temporarily disable pre-purchases," O'Brien says. "In the end that wasn't enough, and even with 48 worlds we didn't have enough server capacity to meet the huge demand. Fortunately, the vast majority of players were able to get into the game and experience Guild Wars 2 in all its glory."

If a developer has to have a problem, we think "too many people want to play our game" is a pretty good one. ArenaNet will host a stress test tomorrow, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. PDT, again open to anyone (including us) who's pre-purchased Guild Wars 2.

In a time when all MMORPGs charged a monthly subscription fee, Guild Wars was the shining light that brought said subscription fees weren't the only future for the genre. For enthusiasts of the first game, ArenaNet didn't need to change much in Guild Wars 2, but the upcoming title adds upon the instanced gameplay of the original by adding events and making the universe feel more alive than ever before.

Gone are the healers and quests have been abandoned, but you shouldn't see that as a bad thing, as ArenaNet's new direction really drives home why Guild Wars 2 doesn't seem to be your average MMO.

#guildwars We all have our personal gaming quirks. I, for example, have a habit of leaping into any new game as a thief, rogue, or assassin type whenever possible. I prefer to move slowly and cautiously, in stealth and shadows, choosing my targets with utmost care. I operate alone or, when in teams, as a scout and sniper who can be relied upon not to be seen. Guild Wars 2 has plenty of fantasy tropes we've all come to expect in an MMORPG, but it's also laced with steam punk elements. Smoke-churning machines hum alongside spell casting wizards and shamans, giving GW2 a vibe that distinguishes it from its peers...

Did you pre-purchase Guild Wars 2 in frothy mouthed anticipation of a pre-release weekend getaway in Tyria while pre-heating an oven and pre-procuring a preponderance of preserves because you must get a head start on all aspects of life? Well then, good news: your foresight’s paid off in the form of an upcoming beta weekend event, which will run from April 27 to 29. There’ll be more in the future as well, but they’ll be announced at a later date. Unfortunately, good old-fashioned sign-ups are now closed, so it’s pre-order or bust. But hey, at least you can still read about the beta, thanks to the wonderful Richard Cobbett. And really, who cares about actually playing a game when you can live the experience vicariously with phrases like “pooping defiance“?
