Usually when a television screen bleeds, it be not cause for celebration, nor does it signify the cutting edge a new technology. Microsoft's Illumiroom challenges that thought, using Kinect 'n a projector t' transpose relevant video 'n images around the TV, on walls 'n furniture, while playing games.

Illumiroom can add flickering lights, particles 'n ambiance t' certain games, or expand the environment in others, though it be still a prototype for now. Microsoft showed off Illumiroom in a video at the Samsung CES keynote, 'n it looked something like the above film.

"IllumiRoom be a proof-a-concept Microsoft Research project designed t' push the boundary a living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual 'n physical worlds with projected visualizations," the Illumiroom YouTube description reads. "The effects in the video be rendered in real time 'n be captured live - not special effects added in post processing."

With the recent launch a Steam Big Picture, it hasn't taken long for the words "Steam Box" t' enter the collective gaming community's brain space. Valve boss Gabe Newell reignited that discussion when speaking on the red carpet at last night's Video Game Awards ceremony about the company's plans t' enter the hardware business.

Newell told Kotaku that he sees multiple companies entering the hardware space, 'n that "most customers 'n most developers be gonna find that [the PC be] a better environment for them." His reasoning be that consumers "won't have t' split the world into thinking about 'why be me mateys in the living room, why be me video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully be gonna unify those environments."

The Valve boss suggested that companies would launch PC bundles in 2013 designed t' run Steam in the living room 'n compete with next gen consoles. Newell added that Valve be one a those companies, 'n it be efforts may not be as open-source as some might expect:

"Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment. If ye want more flexibility, ye can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that be what some people be really gonna want for their living room. The nice thing about a PC be a lot a different people can try out different solutions, 'n customers can find the ones that work best for them."
Francis
Consumers don't care about having a full desktop OS hooked up t' their TV. If Valve be going t' sell a stripped down PC that be Steam-certified or whatever that auto-updates drivers then that be a console. t' be able t' run "next gen" games it will be a $1000+ PC so how be that going t' compete with consoles that run the same games at half the price?
