Since everything is user-generated, you create the world and the quests.  The basic structure of the game world is like this:

  • There is an overhead map view of the world.  The map has different kinds of spaces on it.  Grass, water, buildings, etc.
  • When you click on a space, the view zooms in to a 2D side view of that area.
  • If the area has a building, you can enter it.  Inside the building is a room.  A room can have doors to other rooms.
  • A room can also have objects in it.  An object can be anything: a chair, magical orb, wizard, etc...
  • The player can carry some objects, these are called items
  • The player can talk to other players in the same space and exchange items

When a player interacts with an object, one or more of these things can happen:

  • Display text/dialog.
  • Give the player an item.
  • Disappear (die)
  • Turn into a different object.
  • Do the above things based on the player having interacted with some other object.

So given the ability to create buildings, objects, define what they do, and chain them all together to build a quest, what would you create?

I mentioned in the State of Digibutter post that I would not have much access to a computer or internet for a while.  That's because I'm walking from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail.  I've gone over 50 miles so far!

As a true geek, I have two cell phones and a netbook.  So I will be able to connect every now and then.  I just want you all to know that I haven't died or something (unless I do get eaten by a bear, but my dog is with me, so that won't happen).

There are now three sets of background tiles to choose from. Set "0" is the default we've always had and can not be changed. Set 1 and 2 are your own personal sprites to customize. Click the Editor button to go to the sprite editor room. Click on the Tile Set 1 or 2, then click on the tile you want to edit. Click the "Save" button when you are done to save all your changes to all the tiles.

12 custom images should be enough for anyone!

(Sorry about the long delay, but this required some major changes behind-the-scenes. Next up is custom items)

when can we start selling these things

This is actually really depressing for some reason. Hopefully the owners of the feed can either re-automate the bot (from what I gather they obtained it from the original Russian developer in 2011) or transfer ownership to someone who can keep it running.

Nice try Nintendo, but I'm not downloading $60 Wii U games. Even if I ignore the limiting DRM, disc games are always cheaper.

W101, Rayman, and/or Pikmin 3 on disc will be $40 soon after release if you keep an eye out for sales.

I'll consider the $50 for $5, but even $50 is probably way more than I'll need for the handful of VC games I might want.

My first attempt at guns/projectiles.  Press the "Equip" button to select a gun. action/punch to shoot. The Cracker Launcher aims toward your mouse cursor, whereas the Blaster just shoots straight. The fireworks will explode on impact with sounds and a flash of light. You can shoot goombas and give damage in the battle arenas.

I'm still considering how best to handle the gun animations... should it be
1) part of your sprite (you draw all the frames twice, one with a gun and one without)
2) a seperate sprite overlaid on top (like the cracker-launcher)
3) don't do anything (projectile just comes out of your main attack, like the blaster)

Francis
the arena battles are a lot more interesting now
Gold Prognosticus
I agree in that regard; I was thinking more along the lines of the direction the sprite faces with the cracker launcher equipped. Kinda strange to see a player running along shooting a weapon blindly behind them.

Introducing the concept of Targets. or maybe Waypoints is a better name.
If you want an object to move around on it's own, you first set down a waypoint. Then place the item on top of it. This is the starting point of your path. When you place more waypoints, the object will begin to move to the closest one. LIKE MAGIC

There are 5 types of waypoints

1) Move to the closest target.
2) Move to the closest target that is NOT the one you just came from.
3) Go to the first target you started at.
4) STOP
5) Move to the closest target when the player touches the object.

Only certain items will work with the waypoints:
PLATFORMS (simple flat things to stand on)
SWITCH BLOCKS
FISH
SPIKE BALLS

Fish will swim back and forth when in water and kill you if touched. Out of water they will siezure in place unless they are on a path.
Spike Balls are simple but deadly, they will fall down with gravity if not on a path.

Moving platforms may have issues and unforseen side-effects. Use at your own risk.

Francis
also worth noting that goombas can now trigger switch blocks and push spikes. And I added a 2-second delay when you die.
Francis
I doubled the speed of the moving, and made it so platforms can only be triggered from above (so they can be used as one-way gates)

This year's Sammer Bowl will be a lot different from last year's. It will consist of two parts... sprite creation and battle.

Sprite creation:
Submit to me a name and sprite sheet of your Sammer-Guy. It must be the same size and animation as this one used for betalands. Each frame is 26x30:
standing - run1 - run2 - run3 - jump - jumping punch - standing punch

Battle:
There will be a Smash-Bros-style battle, where I will keep track of who kills who over a certain time period.

You can practice battle right now in the betalands by entering the arena in the clouds. In the arena you can double-jump and if you die 3 times you will get kicked out of the area (your lives are reset each time you enter the arena)

Congrats to the winners: SPRITE: Viddd. BATTLE: Penguin PornAce OVERALL: Penguin PornAce
